Solo Through Romania's Dark Past 🇷🇴
🇷🇴Deep in the heart of Eastern Europe lies the nation of Romania. A mysterious land to many with its own history of villains and heroes. And it was in search of one such polarising figure that I began a journey across this land ( by the world’s greatest train ) in the footsteps of Ceaucescu. Join me on this personal journey which I have long dreamed of making as we trace the leader’s final days in power and his ultimate demise.
Shoutout to all the friendly Romanian people I met on the journey.
The prequel to this video can be found on the Daily Bald channel.

Romania has bad reputation in Europe because of the ethnic "g - word" living in Romania (youtube will censor this comment if I even spell the word), although most of them now left Romania. Mix that with the Dracula story, past communism, poverty, and 90% of tourists are scared away. The only tourists left that really want to visit Romania are the risk taking, adrenaline junkies looking for an exotic dangerous place to visit. But those too get disappointed because instead of an exotic dangerous place, they find a "normal" eastern block place not really different from, say, Poland. In the North-Western half of Romania, even people look a lot like those from Poland, or even from East-Germany. The irony is that Romania really has quite special touristic attributes. But given the circumstances, Romania's unique touristic flavor will continue to be appreciated only by the few expert connoisseur tourists.
It’s good to see Bald still going strong after all these years. One of the only travel vloggers who isn’t boring and insufferable on the platform.

There are literally hundreds of hours of film footage of all these events (Timisoara, CC, Targoviste, all). You are just lazy or poorly informed. A simple Google search would've drowned you in footage, documentaries, video investigations and anything you can imagine. The Romanian Revolution was the first one to be televised (as in filmed, photographed & documented in such detail). Saying we don't see or know of footage of it is just plain ignorant.

Hey Ben, regarding the AC, as soon as you went into the wagons bound for Romania. It's a widespread belief in Romania that a draft can kill you (mostly old people believe this), the symptoms range from muscle aches, swollen eyes/ears and tooth aches😅. In almost all public transport (trains included) you can see people shutting the windows and cranking up the AC as to avoid the draft of death. Love the videos and hopefully you'll visit soon. Really stoked to see you in Romania. When I was in college I had the incredible opportunity to go to an archaeological field school program in Romania. We took the train from Budapest into central Romania where I stayed with a Romanian family for a month in the tiny provincial town of Rapoltu Mare. While there we ate, drank, and excavated Dacian remains/artifacts with the locals. Most spoke almost no English, and I almost no Romanian, but we absolutely formed a bond. Hearing the opinions the older locals have on Ceausescu was very interesting and surprising, we were told by our American professors that he was an inherently evil presence on the country and people - I appreciate you taking the time to listen to the locals. Can't wait to see where your Romanian travels take you next. I hope you check out the decommissioned salt mines that are now repurposed into underground amusement parks. And if you find yourself in Rapoltu Mare, you have to climb Magura Uroilui - it's a landscape feature that has been well documented during the Roman Empire. Be safe Bald.

I went to Romania. I was 13. We went to the original draculas castle. Walked up the endless stairs. My dad had to go to the restroom so he went off in the woods. We came down and while we were on our last stairs a man dressed in all black was on his was up and the sun was almost already set. We joked it was Dracula. About 45 minutes later on a dark back road we hit a horse that jumped off its wagon from the other lane. The car exploded. Immediately there were about 30 Gypsy’s surrounding the car. My uncle and father got out of the car (they are from Romania) they were yelling with the Gypsies about who’s fault it was and my father hears one of them say get the axe. My dad came to the window and said do not speak English do not get out of this car. Thankfully the axe they wanted was for the horse. Sadly it was put to sleep. 2 hours later after they tried multiple times to have us stay and get the car off the road the cops came. They had to push out car from behind for about 30 mins. I’ll never forget how cold it was and I told my dad please roll up the windows and he looks at me and says (we don’t even have windows roll up) every window but one was busted out from the horse crushing the top. It was a miracle we survived A. The Gypsies, B. The horse.
Mr. Bald, I'm sorry to break the charm, but the lady in Hungary was not flirting with you, she was telling you not to film her :D If you ever come back to Hungary, I can not recommend you enough to visit Dunaújváros. This town was built in the 1950's and was originally called Sztálinváros (Stalin town), but it was renamed to Dunaújváros, which means Danubenewtown. There are many sign of the past still remaining, there is even mosaic, and in the museum there is a statue of Lenin hidden, which used to be on the main square.
