Hunting The Caspian Sea Monster 🇷🇺

🇷🇺 In the 1960s American spy satellites photographed a huge leviathan craft docked in the Caspian Sea. The CIA dubbed it the Caspian monster. It was however a top secret Ekranoplan that was built for war. It remained in a naval dockyard under lock and key after the USSR collapsed until recently when it broke free and washed ups on a beach a few hours to the south near the Russian city of Derbent. I flew to Rostov and set off across the varied landscapes and cultures of Southern Russia in search of the infamous Caspian monster.
Kalmyk song on radio is called Eejin Duun by Okna Tsahan Zam and is on KZread if you search it.

He feels comfortable in Russia/Slavic countries, he doesnt like to do travel or history youtubes in other countries because they are not interesting to him. He has done travel yts in India and South America but hes a sensitive person and those countries have alot of really off-putting scammers and touts everywhere, as well as completely unsanitary food situations... Theirs a difference between eating at a dive restaurant and eating street food cooked up by basically homeless people. He prefers to eat at dive restaurants and sleep at dive hotels.. but not worse than that.

And Kalmyk do not use A word to say please , for example, “please wait” in kalmykian is “kvlaijaich”, The “ch” in the end of the word or phrase means please . This is the fate of almost all rural mountain villages, all over the world. I live in one in central Italy. The children go to the cities or other countries, because nobody wants to be a subsistence farmer or herdsman, if they don't have to be. It is even tough for remote workers, as parabola based internet has more outages than a remote worker can afford and it is not economical to run fiber. My wife and I scramble through picturesque ruins and lunch in the shade of a crumbling castle, watching as nature and earthquakes slowly bring centuries of habitation back to rubble.

There are a number of abandoned villages in the region but this one is the best known as it's one of the largest and most accessible. On my KZread I have a number of videos of me driving in this region, if anyone is interested. It's certainly one of the most interesting areas I have ever visited, having been there three times and would certainly go back. In Spring you will see dozens of eagles soaring across the sky here. There are a number of abandoned villages but this one Gamsutl is one of the best known and most accessible. Kakhib near Goor is one of the most spectacular, situated on a sheer rock face and with crumbling defensive towers like in Chechnya, Ingushetia and Svaneti (Georgia).

If it's at all possible please visit Mongolia one day. They are often forgotten because they were techically not a part of the USSR but they were literally a 16th shadow state ran by the Soviets ever since WW2. When I visited in early 2000s, I saw a lot of the classic Soviet stuff you see in your videos but they are starting to modernise rapidly.

  • @janellek21

I noticed that about Mongolia. It felt very Soviet when I went there 3 years ago. The people look East Asian, but the vibe still felt quite Russian. So when I tried to ask about the history, I learned from locals that the Communist dictator of Mongolia, Yumjagin Tsendenbal, tried on about half a dozen occasions to get the USSR to annex Mongolia. He was paranoid (as were most Communist dictators) and was convinced that Mao Tse Tung was planning to invade and conquer his country, so he desperately wanted to join up with the USSR so that the Russians would be on the hook to defend Mongolia if Mao invaded. That never happened, so Mongolia became a vassal Soviet state. The capital of Ulaanbaatar still has plenty of Soviet style concrete buildings, most Mongolians over 40 speak some Russian, and every town I went to still had a Communist party hall and circus arena still standing.
