Farmer Tyler was pulling a calf today in California. Imagine 2 KZread channels showing the same thing. Now if we could only get Dr. Pol on the National Geographic TV channel doing the same topic. It is exhausting work. Farmer Tyler also talked to the calf. The cow is mooing like she understands. Great video.

Hello Kaye how are you doing today?

There is a reason they make calf jacks. Used properly they make getting calves out much easier. A couple of helpful tips: Use chains right from the start making sure the chains are above the dew claws. It looks horribly painful, but I have yet to see a calf crippled by their use. Use a chain hook; it saves your hands and allows you to pull better. They make different length chains. You have the long chains, you need the short chain as well. In a pinch tie a knot into the long chain to get a better length. Open up the back of your chute to give yourself room to back up if needed. You can, if needed open up the side of the chute. That is usually what you have to do if they go down.

You probably already know this, but for those that don't, as a quick reference when the hooves start coming out and if the split of the hoof or the bottom is pointing up then the calf is breach. Excellent work Erin. And what an authentic reaction from you!!! The first thing you will learn about pulling calves is how quickly your grip strength fades on those slimy front legs. Chains always take the win here. The next thing you will learn is your muscle power is rarely enough. Use your weight to your advantage by stepping on the chains and/or handles when you have the room for it. Thirdly you can encourage contractions by going in vaginally with your hands just a few inches past your wrist. Thats especially helpful when the nose is just barely showing.

We use a calving strap instead of chains. you have to make sure to pull on each strap individually when you first install the strap to pull it down through the slime.
