In some ways, motorbiking is not as interesting as it was in the 70's/80s. Back then we had out of date maps (who remembers plastic ones) , no GPS so no idea where next gas station was, a bike which were near guaranteed to break down but much easier to fix. There was no internet nor mobile phones of course, so the sense of adventure and indeed feeling of isolation was stronger in my opinion. You relied on guide books, word of mouth, had to canvas locals to find places to stay / eat / visit etc The advantage we had in Europe was you could cover a lot of countries but the paper work was tedious especially in East Europe (Soviet Union then) Just different era but now its a lot easier and safer for beginners to get into motorbike adventuring so that's brilliant.

yes it would have been epic to be riding back in the day. I am working on a film project of the discovery of the most iconic surfing waves in Indonesia in the late 60's early 70's and a similar thing of people going out into the unknown risking it all for a real adventure. I guess I was just a few decades too late 😂.

Amazing how similar the countryside is to the US, and to see kangaroos and emu running around is very cool

Yes parts are very similar, well yes a few different animals is all that gives it away sometimes. Hopefully I'll be able to ride over there soon, I have done a lot of road trips and hiking in the US, can't wait to ride it.

Thanks Adam, glad you are enjoying there series. Yes it is epic to ride off into the distance with no set plan, just a couple rough ideas that you may or may not do. It seem a lot of people are afraid of the unknown were I am excited about it, I guess that is why I like doing it this way. The Himalayan has been really good, it has done everything I have asked of it. There are a few more episode from this ride, then it's onto the next, I think I might head west next.

Today I started pondering on the idea of getting a Himalayan. I ride an Africa Twin and have done a couple of long-haul rides with it as well as a bit of off-road. I wouldn't get rid of my AT but the Himalayan would be quite the change. I know... "don't look for speed with it". But that's just the point...."and now for something completely different". So much for my story. I happened upon your videos (algorithms doing their job?) and just watched the first in your series. I REALLY loved your laid-back approach, your superb photography and storytelling! And the putter of the H (lol)!. I will surely be watching the rest of this series to see if they finally convince me to go for it! And have hit the subscribe button. Bravo!

Well there are a lot of epic bikes out there, it's all about what you want to get out of your riding and skill level, I mean what Toby Price (graham jarvis, manuela lettenbichler etc..) would take on an adventure is probably totally different than most. I have found the Himalayan great for exploring, it's good on and off road, it got me thought everything I have asked of it, only my riding ability has let me down (see episode 2 😂, it wouldn't have matter which bike I was on with my skill level and the amount of gear). I have dropped it a bunch of times but no issue it just keeps going, oh and it is easy to lift out of the dirt or sand. I have a dirt bike if I want to get really loose but I definitely wouldn't be carrying camera gear on it. So it great for what I need, note if someone said hey you want to ride a postie bike or a Honda monkey across the country, I be the first one to say yes. As as the old saying goes, it's not an adventure until something goes wrong.

Thanks Riley. You'll love the bike and exploring, if you are riding alone remember the basics, EPB / PLB EPB emergency personal beacon / Personal Locator Beacon. Get the extra fuel tanks, and always carry too much water.

I always had fairly big bikes, Gold Wing, Roadliner and Indian Roadmaster pushing the 400kg mark or higher, probably because I am a fair size myself 188cm and 107kg before breakfast. And because of that and the bikes I had I was limited to paved roads. That all changed when they made my an offer I couldn't refuse. I got a steal of a deal on a 2021 Honda Cb500X....and NOW I can start to look at doing some unpaved roads as well, hence me watching your channel. Good job by the way.

Stunning Videography. The darkness as the sun was setting gave me goosebumps. The sheer dread and excitement of being the only human for miles must have been intoxicating. Loved Himalayan's agricultural sound. Currently pondering on what beginner ADV to get. I am torn between the KTM 390 ADV and the Himalayan. The 390 is fast and more capable but does not have that tractor feel of a Himalayan.

Glad you like the video. Yes it great being in the middle of nowhere all alone. I have had the husqvarna svartpilen 401 which is the same engine east the 390KTM, it is a more punchy engine, a great bike also. It will all depend on what type of riding you are going to do, if you are going to do longer trips and carry more gear it changes the characteristics of the bike, so the RE might suit better, if you were planing more shot trips with just a small bag on the back the KTM might suit better. The 21inch front on the RE is better off road when in rougher terrain, also if you go with the KTM get the spoked wheels as if you hit something really hard the rim will bend but you can keep going or you can straighten again withe spoke adjustment, the cast wheel once you crack them that's it. If you have ridden a dirt bike a lot and can through a bike around then the lighter KTM will do that better. If you do not have a lot of time on harder dirt tracks and trails then the tractor of the RE might suit you better. If you are going to listen to anyone about a bike, first understand how they used the bike and the type of ridding and their ability, then compare that to you. Someone who has won the Dakar rally will have a totally different point of view (and requirements) on the same bike as a beginner. If you have any other questions let me know.

I hade the 401 Svartpilen and road around Australia last year with 2 mates (some photos of the ride on instagram. It's a fun bike, more power cones faster, but not as good off road or caring gear.

If a trip is planed out I'd call it a tour (and there is nothing wrong with a tour) but I do prefer like you making it up as you go, I am a big fan of the unknown.

Thanks Jono, yes no plan is a good way to go, it kind of invites a little bit of adventure. It also worked for the other 9 episodes so far, some might say episode 2 its lead me down the wrong path, it is was the bit I need up enjoying the most. Hope you take off on a ride soon with no plan.

You really have me hooked on the himalayans now but unfortunately they are not for sale in South Africa, although one could buy it in India and then import it through a rather complicated process... and once here you may not resell it within the first 2 years of purchase... not that I would... It is such a rarity that I would probably keep it for life...

Beautifully filmed mate, love it. Just a really high quality (I think you're probably the first motovlogger I've seen that actually colourgrades/shoots log) and great story, you definitely deserve more subs and views which I'm sure will come. I'm a photographer/videographer as well and just ordered my own Himalayan a few weeks ago to get out and adventure/make stuff so it really hits home. How do you find taking camera gear as well as all the camp stuff? Haven't seen many other photogs on bikes to get packing ideas from haha

Stoked you're enjoying them Chis.I've been make documentaries and filming for the last couple decades so shooting log and colourgrading is the only way I know how to do it 😂. Yes one day the algorithm might pick my videos up, I'm not great on all the analytics, tactic, self promotion, social media, I just like making films and telling stories. All my camera gear is on my back in a Shimoda Action X30 I used to film/shoot a lot of backcountry snowboarding overseas (before the pandemic) but the bag works really well on the Himalayan, the bottom of the bag sits on the pillion seat which takes all the weight off the shoulders so the shoulder straps just keep the bag balanced. The reason I keep all the camera gear in the backpack is to protect it from the vibrations from the road, dirt road corrugations etc.... my body and the pillion seat absorb the harder hits. In April/May/June I road around Australia on a motorbike with 2 mates (there are some photos here instagram.com/freewayproject/ ) we had another mate with us in a 4WD and even in that the sensors in my cameras that are 5 axis stabilised got damage (knock off the stabilised mounts) so I had to work out a way to keep the cameras from getting damaged. Hope that can help in some way.

@@freewayproject Legend! Thanks. That absolutely does, interesting indeed. I've trimmed my daily work kit to all fit in one decent sized Lowepro backpack + tripod so that was my initial plan, but I got put off that idea of the bag on my back in case of a spill which then led to wanting to jerry-rig a Pelican style hardcase on the back with some foam inserts and then the alu panniers for things like the drone and lenses in padded bags. I definitely love the idea of backpack as you to say to use your body and the seat to better absorb the shocks of dirt roads on a long term basis though as that's still my main concern. Might be back to the drawing board now 😂thanks so much for the input my friend And it definitely works. I love the stuff other people put out with just Rec709/simple stuff and GoPro footage etc too but the extra quality and A7SIII really helps solidify the story and feel so much more polished. Ought to post some of these in the bigger ADV/Himalayan etc groups on FB, I'm sure they'd go down a treat!

Hi Alan, I'm glad you enjoyed the video, there will probably be around 16 -17 video from this adventure (still going) There are 11 videos so far and more trips planed for the future. Yes it is great exploring the outback with no real plan, just taking it day by day finding new places to explore and luckily in Australia there is so much variety form the outback to the beaches, coastline to the forrest, very fortunate here. Yes the Himalayan is working out well, get me everywhere I want to go, and when I drop it I can actually pick it up by myself 😂, I don't know if I could pick up a big adventure bike with all the gear on. Great to have you along for the ride, hopefully it distracts you from the cold wet weather for a bit.

It is a great spot, there was no one else around when I was there. It has good facilities too.

Enjoying your videos, keep them coming. Have a ride recommendation for you which I did recently and I also live in SE Qld. Head north and check out Undara Lava Tubes and also Cobbold Gorge. Great photo opportunities.

yes they have a similar look, but the Badlands area is quite a bit bigger, this has only the one long ridge.

Hi mate, I am using the older Sony A7RIII (I think they are up to version 5 now) I don't have a lot of room on the bike so I only take 2 lenses a Sony GM 70 - 200mm 2.8 and a Sony GM 24mm 1.4

Fantastic video. Editing was top notch, and you're a natural when it comes to narration. Congrats! Btw mate, I love those boots at 13:40. Where did you get them? hehe

Thanks Cuentos, glad you enjoyed the video, there's about 18 episode in that series, the boots make a few more appearances the boot are MEN'S KODIAK THANE WATERPROOF BOOT, it form a 100 year old Canadian boot company, they are leather and waxed cotton, I have had that pair for 8 years and they are still great.

You're Welcome Sean, by SA do you mean South Africa? I gather there are some epic trails to explore there. The next to episode on the current series will so a lot more of the capability of the Himi, I take it through some real Australia outback landscape

@@freewayproject hi Joe, yes thats south africa correct-dual sport paradise. I have a old xt600 tenere and the younger xt660-old girl for special trips and workhorse 660 for a the other. Enjoying big ass beautifull Ausie with you. Thanks Sean

Have you been in the middle of nowhere and your battery fails? Do you carry a spare battery? I highly recommend it for bikes that do not allow a battery bypass to run. Nice video.

I have 2 other Lithium batteries with me that I can transfer power from. And as a back up I can charge them with a 100w solar panel

Thanks Srikumar, footage shot from the bike is with an old DJI Osmo action (the original one) and the other footage is filmed with a Sony A7SIII and a Sony GM 24mm F1.4. Photos are taken with a Sony A7RIII and a Sony GM 24mm F1.4 and a Sony GM 70 - 200mm F2.8

Thanks Gravel Chef. The bike is fine on a bit of sand but once it got deep (see the episode 2 the one after this one) I had some issue, but I don't think it was the bike more the rider (me) plus the weight distribution, traveling like this for a month at a time I have more gear/weight on the bike and it is back heavy, also I have a backpack on which has my camera gear and it is 20+ kg so it becomes like a pendulum if I am standing and on the pegs moving around. Shed the weight and no backpack it feels more like my dirt bike position which is great. I would recommend nobble tires I used the dunlop D605 on the back (would have like the D605 front one on also going through the deep sand). Hope that helps.

@@freewayproject Thanks, it sounds like the Himalayan are a very competent bike nowadays. I was close to buying one a few years ago but a bit hesitant about the build quality, but I now see lots of people doing epic rides on them. Sand is always tricky, well for me at least, luggage weight certainly doesn't help.

If you go to the actual youtube channel there is a button that says play list www.youtube.com/@freewayproject/playlists This is the series a rough idea play list. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZmuIycemmpzTlKg.html There is a path that goes into the "Walls of China" that they like you to keep on, it takes you right up to them, they don't want you climbing on them as they are delicate like China (the material they make tea sets out of)

@@freewayproject oh ok cool. i as watching two other Oz guysbut that was 2 years ago they had to have police follow them through china said was not allowed on their ow and like you there is spots I want to see there on the bike like the wall ill have a follow now cheers
