Searching for dirt track as I head north on the alternative route Series 3 Episode 5

Leaving Jindabyne, I ride dirt roads past Deua National Park and drop down into the old gold rush Araluen Valley and discover an epic track. I then head north into the southern highlands to meet up with Dave the Craftsman to take some photos and check out what he has been making.

    Free camping! I wish. No such thing in England and Wales. Also, Australian drivers much be much more patient than they are over here. A couple of red flashing lights wouldn't stop many people driving in front or behind that little service train. Wonderful video... thanks.

    Thanks Neil, I am glad you enjoyed it. New South Wales has the least free camping in the country, the other states are a lot more relaxed about where you can camp. but we have nothing on New Zealand, beside a few Māori site and environmentally sensitive sites (which is understandable) you can free camp basically anywhere, so I am definitely keen on exploring there too. Wow the drivers there must be full on, that crossing was in Sydney and the drivers there are know as the most aggressive drivers in the country.

    Lots of country covered in that one! A bit disappointed you didn't head up my way onto the mountain tracks, but you had a place to be! I've been to Araluen quite a few times, so good to see you explore there. One of my favourite photos is of a couple of huge dead trees against the mountains opposite the pub. Too bad the dirt road from Major's Creek has been permanently closed after the fires - would have saved you some distance and provided extra windy dirt into the bargain! You were lucky with the roads. The road through to Moruya has been closed for several years and only reopened recently. Same with Jamberoo pass - was closed for a long time. Love that area - was only out at Carrington falls last week. Thanks...

All of those finer details you worked on to make this thing here and there better have added up ALOT to make some seriously spectacular videos! If you ever happen to feel the urge to head in the direction of Adelaide, please reach out as I would love to show you something :) It certainly sounds like the next one will be awesome as always, ps dont forget its not the hours you spend on each video. Its all of the hours you have put into every video that create each one that makes them truly shine, plus you can tell you love it otherwise nobody would put in the effort you do, the same way it takes ages looking to train the eyes to see an awesome photo and how you will process it before even taking the shot which i know you will definitely understand!

    Thanks mate, glad you are enjoying the series. It all depends on the conditions I ride in, if i go through rain or river crossings then come to dusty trails or sandy tracks I find the chain has issue, so it's about getting more oil back on the chain but also needing to clean the chain and re oil but that doesn't always work out when your traveling as due to needing to save as much weight as possible I don't have cleaning gear, so it depends when I might get to a town and if they have one of those car washes, so it's more about managing it and accepting that riding long distances over all kinds of terrain exploring you are going to have more wear on the chain than if you only did short rides from home. I use any chain oil I can get my hands on at the time.

    Gudday Joe, since buying a RE 411 I found your channel and have a question regarding the fuel gauge. I rode it from Tamworth to the Grafton area via Coffs Harbour, and on the last leg I had the gauge show close to empty so fueled up and it took 8 litres, less than half what it holds. Does your gauge similarly show empty prematurely. I have just had the first service done and mentioned it and was told it was a biggish job to even check it out. Great Channel mate, the wife and I are enjoying it immensely.

  • @freewayproject

    @freewayproject

    5 ай бұрын

    thanks mate I am glad you guys are enjoying the series. The fuel gauge issue isn't just a 411 thing I don't know of any motorbike that has an accurate fuel gauge once it drops to about half, note I have never ridden a more expensive bike like a BMW etc..... My mate has a Husqvarna 401 and his says it goes from over half to empty in about 10km on the gauge . It's all to do with the shape of motorbike fuel tanks, were as car fuel tanks are basically a rectangular box, motorbike ones are not and can be split into 2 and change shape as they go further down, so the floats that were design for cars aren't really fit for purpose for bikes. I take a note of the km when fuelling up on long rides, and also have those jerry cans on the side o the bike just incase.

  • @geoffnewberry477

    @geoffnewberry477

    Thanks Joe, I too have bought the two Jerry cans and am yet to fit them. I have done a check on my fuel consumption and should get 440 klm from full to empty. Does that sound right to you? A mate has the new 452 on order so we might meet on the road somewhere once his is delivered in around 6-8 weeks as we plan to do a couple of good length rides a couple of times a year.

  • @freewayproject

    @freewayproject

    @@geoffnewberry477 yes I got 420km and still had a 1L left, so that works out to about 450km, If you sit over 100kmph that will drop a bit also if it is really hilly or massive head winds which I have had, so just need to keep that in mind too. that will be awesome doing some longer rides, it will be interesting what the new one is like.

    Yes when I was in the middle of the outback and there was no moon I started before dawn, it was so bright my eye couldn't deal with the dynamic range, the only thing I had was tape to cover it. In a city with street light it's not an issue. I have not gotten around to pulling the tape of as yet.
