Solo: A Star Wars Story - WTF Happened To This Movie?

Ойын-сауық

Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Movie?
In the latest episode we look back at what happened to the Star Wars spinoff effort SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, which ended up being a financial disaster and critical flop for the usually cast-iron franchise. However, it wasn't just a case of fans not caring for the film, it was a case of a film that seemed doomed early on, as original directors Chris Miller & Phil Lord were fired and replaced three-quarters of the way through shooting with veteran director Ron Howard picking up the slack and reshooting nearly the whole film. How did this happen? Why did this happen? What went wrong? We explore it all in the latest episode of WTF Happened To This Movie?

About 60% of the movie going audience (which is really under 20% of the public- surprised me) finally got fully triggered. And now anything can trigger them again. @The Logomaker As much as I doubt that it is that bad, if it was just as bad as TLJ that would have been enough for me to be glad about my decision not to watch it. And just to make that clear; my doubt stems from how bad TLJ was and the therefore missing space for movies to be that much worse. If it really was a Kubrick film compared to Solo, Solo would be the clear no contest winner for "worst movie ever made"... and lest not forget that there are still gems like "The Room" out there.

    I genuinely could not finish watching this movie. I was all about Han Solo when I was a kid in the 70s. I walked around with a 12 inch Han Solo action figure, and I mean everywhere I went. He was my childhood hero and my one of my favourite movie characters for over 40 years. I didn't think it would be the best movie ever made, but I didn't think it would be so atrociously bad. For me, someone with a decades long affection for the character Han Solo and not being able to finish the movie. It hurt. Anyone that says it was a good movie has no idea about, and only pretends to know, who Han solo is.

    To be fair, even the original Star Wars film is loaded with tropes that borrow from a bunch of sources (Flash Gordon, WWII films, etc). The difference is that it at least FELT fresh at the time because it hadn’t been combined with sci-fi and fantasy in such a spellbinding way. Now, the new films feel like cookie-cutter screenplays with forgettable characters.

It's not a world breaker, but it's not a bad movie either. Forgettable, because it's part of Star Wars cannon it will not be forgotten, regretted by some for sure, but enjoyed by some also.

    Brian Nagar sorry man ... Curiosity isn’t enough to make something rememberable. It’s just enough to get you to watch. Though it’s just an opinion, but I would say a good many share it...I had no investment in the characters nor the story. I didn’t go back to watch it. Fulfilling ones’s curiosity isn’t always a good thing in storytelling. It is the mystique that makes something larger than life. Han is no longer a man of mystery, he’s just a regular predictable being in some story now, processed like a can of beans.

I already know what Han goes on to do and that he will survive this prequel, up to episode 7. Therefore, there is never any real threat against him, and that's why it fall flat against the other prequels that he isn't in, or even Rogue one with its original cast. Yeah, the current run of Lucasfilm movies have been a mess with trying to reestablish the Star Wars name. I mean, Rogue One loses its director and had numerous scenes from the trailer cut along with original story beats, TLJ somehow didn't have issues behind the scenes, Solo lost its directing duo (who've since won Oscars for reinterpreting the mythos of Spider-Man) because they strayed to far from the script, TRoS lost its director for making a good awful movie (just wiki Book of Henry), then we got the recent Benioff & Weiss firing shortly after they rushed Game of Thrones to a poor series finale and admitted the show everyone loved was more due to luck and passionate crew and actors. That's not even going into the Josh Trank Boba Fett movie, but hey we got The Mandelorian so it's a wash.

  • @GeneralBulldog54

    @GeneralBulldog54

    4 жыл бұрын

    @The Logomaker I don't think it was that simple. L&M cast a group of actors where their lead couldn't improv, their multiple takes were costing the studio an insane amount of money and they deviated from Kasdan's script (the one where Kennedy negotiated Kasdan's return to the series in TFA by guaranteeing a Solo movie) so much that in conjunction with everything listed, they had to be let go. Remember, Solo was supposed to be a light space romp with a bit of comedy thrown in there. L&M decided it should be a reexamination of the Star Wars mythos seen through the eyes of its most cynical character. The only issue being it was costing the studio way too much and deviated too much from an established script. But hey, if L&M, Trevorrow, Edwards and Gilroy received credits for their previous work on their respective movies then its not a complete wash.

  • @GeneralBulldog54

    @GeneralBulldog54

    4 жыл бұрын

    @The Logomaker Still, it was Kasdan's script and passion project (I mean a lot of what we learned about Han in 5,6 and 7 came from the elder Kasdan, if anyone knew the character it was him). As directors L&M should have known and respected that. The one thing reported over and over about Solo beyond it going overbudget, was how much the cast couldn't jibe with what L&M were doing. It speaks volumes, that 80% of the movie was completed through L&M before they were let go and Howard was able to reshoot it almost entirely for less in less time. I'm more impressed it turned into a functional movie and not something like Justice League where you can clearly tell two different directors filmed it.

  • @GeneralBulldog54

    @GeneralBulldog54

    4 жыл бұрын

    @The Logomaker I'm not doubting L&M at all. They are Oscar/BAFTA winners for a reason. However, it should have been stipulated from the start, in pre-production that they respect the script. Of the movies they've directed that they didn't write or produce, the only movie they they had less of a hand on was 21 Jump Street co-writen by one of its stars. Other movies and tv shows they had a greater hand of control or just wrote together. I can't really bad mouth Kasdan since he wrote the nuances of the character and was approved by the actors playing him. I have no idea how it didn't work, it should have been a match made in the cosmos especially after L&M's reverence for the series. However, if they butt head with the writer(s), did numerous takes only to go over budget and not be close to being finished filming by the time the first trailer to TLJ comes out and release is on Memorial Day weekend, there needed to be a change. It does add a cloud over the current Lucasfilm regime. For movies that made so much to have so many behind the scenes issues, I'm amazed they've been so successful in these few troublesome years. It's equal parts a miracle and troubling they're still afloat. After, TROS here's to another 5 years.

I'm not a huge Star Wars fanboy (but enough to know 'The Empire strikes Back' will never be beaten) Alden's performance was great, the set pieces (the heist in particaular) was fantactic too. I am not always on board with Rotten Tomatoes or IMDb for their rating for 'The Last Jedi'

  • @richardathome65

    That was 100% the best rundown on why Solo underperformed. I'm really sick of hearing from Star Wars "fans" (the more toxic ones, as mentioned in the video) how crap this movie is when many of them haven't even seen it. They point to box office as evidence, and this video excellently explains why that happened and it wasn't due to the film itself, but a lot of surrounding circumstances. As for Rotten Tomatoes, I am aware there was a concerted push by certain fanboy elements after The Last Jedi to boycott this movie and vote it down on RT. I have read and heard from some of those who either decided this movie sucked before they saw it or didn't see it at all that now the fuss has all died down and they have revisited it or seen it for the first time, they actually liked it. Definitely deserves a sequel with the same cast.

    wstine79 Actually, George Lucas wanted Ron Howard to direct the prequels but Howard rejected the offer because he found the project “too daunting” and felt that Lucas was the only one who could do the “Star Wars” franchise justice (since Lucas created those characters after all): *”’[George Lucas] didn’t necessarily want to direct them. He told me that he had talked to [Robert] Zemeckis, he talked to me, he talked to Steven Spielberg. I was the third one he spoke to. They all said the same thing: ‘George, you should just do it. This is your baby.' Nobody wanted to follow that act I don’t think at that point. That was an honor, but it would’ve been just too daunting.’”* Source: www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/ron-howard-turning-down-star-844107

    The Old Republic would make an awesome series. You could get at least 3 full length movies, maybe more if the individual characters warranted spin offs. The Old Republic was so far in the past from what they are making now that you could go in so many directions.

    Me and my original thrilogy fan friends who detested the prequels when they came out but had a slight hope after The Force Awakens before it went all horrible in the Last Jedi gave up on it all.... But when watching Solo with no expectations, we all realized we really enjoyed it. All of us admitted that Solo was the best new Star Wars release, now next to the Andor series. Surpassing the Rogue One that was quite ok I'd say it was caught in the disasterous vibe of the sequel trilogy failure and failed by plain association.

    One of those statements is correct. Ron Howard did his best and for the 3 weeks he had its a wonder he pulled it off.... But the movie is garbage on structural level. The name is a lie, its not a Solo movie. Solo is a sidekick in the story focusing on everyone except Solo and the movie tells nothing about how Solo became or learned anything. It instead tells how a teenager became Enfys Nest and how Han Solos exgirlfriend turned a super-Ninja and how the Outlaw team led by Woody Harrelson died, him the last one being killed by Solo for reasons too convoluted for anyone to care and most of them having more to do with Enfys Nest need to be the hero than Solos character being anything at all. ONLY reason anyone say anything positive of Solo is because The Last Jedi was so offensively bad that Solo appeared ok in comparisonl But no its not Solo which is good. Its the Last Jedi which is THAT BAD so bad that teachers in screenwriting can use it as example of how not to do a movie.

    @For Shiz yo Now you are lying Nobody who trashes Rise of Skywalker claims to have seen the movie. What is being trashed is - SAME AS WITH SEASON 8 - the leaked story details. The leaks appeared online before the first trailer and same as with Game of Thrones Season 8 unfortunately ALL material released after the leaks have confirmed the leaks. So people who read the leaks now have a very good idea what the movie will be like from start to finish and they are trashing THAT version of the movie. Whether Disney will release that version of the movie is up to them but everything points towards they will do it because Kathleen Kennedy would lose face is they fixed even some of the obvious problems. When I say everything points towards the movie being like that I mean we have seen 4 different trailers since then containing exactly what was predicted in leaks. Its no longer contested that its about a fetch-quest for a macguffin to go to the Emperor and have the most anticlimactic least exciting battle in movie history. So you claiming "nobody have seen it yet" is an non-argument. If its ANYTHING like what have been leaked then I am glad I havent seen it. The leaked writing is bad beyond understand and the movie is not driven by the characters. Things just "happen" because the script want them to happen. The main characters dont need to do anything, every challenge is fixed by somebody just happening to show up with the missing piace of the macguffin search from sidequest hell of RPG:s

    @The Logomaker Thats the fantasy version. The real story is that Ron Howard was given 3 weeks to turn Spaceballs 2 the movie feat Jim Carrey into a Star Wars movie because Phil Lord and Chris Miller wasted the money on multiple takes on the same scene ending up with content which couldnt be used. Also as is obvious from the movie we ended up with the script was all over the place. They couldnt decide if they wanted to do a western, a heist movie or a romantic adventure. They tried to do everything and got a movie which cant decide what it want to be.

  • @TheCultureCommentary

    @TheCultureCommentary

    @The Logomaker Spaceballs 2 wouldnt have been a Star Wars movie at all. Also Lord & Miller did get their way... The problem was what they did with their way. It was only 3 weeks left and they simply did not bother working on producing a movie on schedule. They spent the money...Dont you see how cheap looking the movie we got is? Disney will probably never tell how much the actual movie cost but my guess would be less than 100 million dollars was spent by Ron Howard on the movie we actually got. Solo looks incredibly cheap Probably in large degree shot on mostly small sets meaning The camera had to zoom in to hide the lack of stuff. For example on Mimban during the introduction of Harrelson and the gang the camera zooms hardly showing anything of what the gang is shooting at. The scene is four people who for all we care could randomly fire at the ground or in the air....in the "war" the total number of enemies we see getting shot is ONE... Woody Harrelson fires his gun at ONE enemy. The rest is random firing offscreen. Its some of the shittiest camere work or editing found in any Star Wars or Spaceballs movie ever.

    @The Logomaker I personally know about a dozen people who watched Force Awakens and forgave it, hopeful for TLJ, and who after watching TLJ completely gave up on Disney Star Wars. Several even took some convincing to get them to give Mandalorian a shot. TLJ completely murdered Disney Star Wars. Before TLJ anything with the name was basically a money printing press. The prequels had their fair share of haters, at least the first one did, but they all did well, and most people thought they were at least okay. I can say for certain that a LOT of people didn't watch Han as a direct result of TLJ being absolute garbage.

    Using the Han Solo trilogy book series as the origin story would've been the way to go. It was much better thought out and gives Han Solo's past as a failed Imperial officer saving Chewbaca the reason he knows so much about Imperial starships and fleet procedures to the original trilogy.
