I can't say if they beat Citizen, but on the mechanical side of things, Orient also feels like incredible value. I've got a couple; good accuracy, nice finish, perfect alignements, tight tolerances, incredible finishing on dial elements.. Decent bracelets for the price. They punch well above their price range, with their own in-house movements as well.

I've got an EcoDrive diver for work and its taken a hard beating over the last 4 years, it's the only watch I've worn for work that hasn't broken after just one year. It's tough. It hasn't got the fineness of my Omega, but it's a great watch and keeps perfect time.

I think it looks great. And who doesn't love a eco drive.

@@PeterKotsa after getting many automatics and manual winds I really want an analog quartz watch. Probably going to be an eco drive. The only issue is a lot of them have backlash which makes the seconds hand not be satisfying to look at if this makes sense.

With the recent trend of Seiko raising their prices over the last few years to try to get their pricing more in line with some of the Swiss competition, Citizen is gaining even more prominence as that true value brand, delivering a ton of quality for the price.

Yeah Citizen is great, Eco drive is nice, sapphire glass everywhere, solid end links, and its still cheaper than the competition

I bought this model about a month ago and wholeheartedly agree with your review, I am delighted with it.

Great piece, I own many eco drives . They started my love for watches, would love to add this to my collection , great review.

I recently got this for my son as a first (low maintenance) analog watch. We both loved it so he wears his alternating w his Casio. And then I had to buy one for myself. (New for 114 US.) It is very lovely just to admire (even nicer in person than in the video) and you know it will run for ever.

I love your reviews and the way you talk about watches. The enjoyment of inexpensive watches is an important message for people just starting this hobby and immediately chasing a luxury piece.

I've got a 1st generation eco drive which I got as a gift when they first came out in 1996,its been running continually since then, although I don't wear it much any more I keep it on a shelf in the light and that keeps it going.

Really cannot go wrong with an citizen eco drive. Makes a great everyday watch, zero maintenance, battery/capacitor should be at 80-90% after 20 years, and they really take a bashing while looking great. I have a promaster tough on bracelet and it’s pretty well my daily beater now. Like you I have a few more expensive pieces, however I like the simplicity of the dial, the tool like function of it, the monocoque case. The only thing I’d change is have no date on it. I paid 420$ cad for mine, no objections. From the second I put it on I knew I was going to own it. Great, no nonsense field watch. Good review, I think they make the best field watches around right now.

I've been wearing the Citizen BM8180-03E almost every single day since 2014. It's an awesome watch, Citizen is a great manufacturer.

I have the exact same watch in black. The strap was too short for me so I replaced it with a greyish vintage style leather strap. It totally looks like a vintage aviator watch now. Love it.

A real timeless design, love the colour combination, the size and the name. think like Casio or Seiko, with Citizen, you can’t go wrong.

I still have the first Citizen Eco Drive Military watch purchased several years ago. I think it was in the ProMaster range. It is an incredible watch and still performs precisely without any service. The strap has become a bit stiff after years of use, but still functional. This watch was legendary and adopted by the UK defence force for service use.

I'm a big Citizen fan. I've got 4 Ecodrives in my collection, and they are the perfect pick-up and go watch.

I love it Peter. I own a few Eco Drives. Very reliable watches. You did well there mate!

I used own one of these watches and its beauty was in its simplicity. I sold it because in the end I prefer bigger watches - anything less than 44mm just seems a bit odd to me and in addition I have a wide wrist so I needed to buy an extra long strap. If the size works for you then this is a tremendous buy - don't hesitate.

Your intro music always has my foot tapping! Love the citizen mate!

This is my favorite design for a daily watch, actually my daily is the Seiko SNZG11 that has an almost identical design. Add the benefits of quartz accuracy and solar and it's a no brainer for me. Oh, and it's at a decent price!

Good looking watch. I really like the hands, the not only different colour of the minute hand but different shape too. For some reason i like that in a handset.

I collect Citizen and the fit and finish is superb

This review is definitely swaying me to buy (greetings from the UK)

Nice find, I found a new festina scuba once, the same as the citizen aqualand with digital depthgauges. 50 bucks are indeed nobrainers.

I have the black version of this watch, it's nice for sure. I kind of like this one too.

👍 Thanks for the last 10 seconds of this video, they prevented me from buying one. (After having seen one in a shop window today i was thinking about it... But not having lume at each hour mark is a nogo for me. (as would be the minute hand not reaching the indices. But in this case it looked close enough in real life to not be an issue)

That's indeed a nice looking watch, Peter. Ya, watches that you enjoy and makes you happy need not be expensive. I have many expensive watches too, but, l prefer watches that is fun to wear, and, many are vintage that you don't see people wearing.

Very enjoyable to see that on a cheap watch, most Citizen watches are spot on.

Thanks for your review. As I was watching the review and admiring the look of this watch, I looked down at my risk and realized why I liked it so much. The dial looks almost identical to my Seiko 5 snzg09j1 without the day complication.

Really? Your first eco-drive? Wow. Welcome to the club. I have a 20-year-old eco-drive. Works as good as new. Citizen's eco-drive is better than seiko solar, too... more reliable, takes less light to keep it going. I think I have three eco-drives -- one field and 2 divers. They're superb. Enjoy!

As always, very nice review. But you really can't say it's "a $50 watch". You got lucky. Imagine you find something like that on a beach. Would you then go ahead and name your video "EXCELLENT FREE WATCH! NO MONEY AT ALL!" ?

HI Rick, yeah I suppose you're right, to be honest I wouldn't have purchased a watch like this unless I found it on the beach or I purchased it cheap (which I did) and NOW after wearing and using it, I would easily commit to buying this at retail as it is a lovey solid/robust watch with amazing legibility.. But, I hear what you are saying, that's why I also decided to give the watch away to bless others who cannot get this at $50 or unavailability issues. Thanks again mate for the feedback, cheers

Nice review! I've been reviewing a bunch of Citizens recently. My prediction is that with Seiko's price going up, Citizen are going to take over and become the new big favourite amongst watch guys (and girls). Citizen is a huge, huge powerhouse and with them holding Bulova and other brands under their belt, along with fantastic heritage, they're going to get even bigger. They tend to be better quality and design than Seiko (and that's no mean feat, Seiko are masters of watchmaking). The eco drives can go for 20-40 years on their rechargeable batteries. My current eco drive lasted 10 years (spent most of its life in a box without sunlight before the battery died). Sent it into Citizen for a service (lubrication and new battery) and now I'm wearing it daily. I'm going to expect 20 years+ service from it, providing I get it lots of sunlight. Excellent watches. Can you tell I'm a fan of Citizen?!

Citizen has been creating jems on a budget for so long now. I own a couple Promaster auto divers and just ordered a World Time GMT w/ Bi-directional bezel, much better then average lume on an extremely legible & symmetrical dial as well as a very well built bracelet & clasp for a little over $200 usd. I’ve bought my parents Eco-drives which have been really worn and are tanks that still look great and run great and . Seiko on the other hand have been steadily declining, taking every step to cut corners as well as continuing to make the same mistakes over & over but they don’t care because the flock continues to follow. Don’t get me wrong many Seiko’s have that charm but when it comes to value Citizen gives you so much for your hard earned money today with so many well built , attractive options like the model PK has shown here. Almost impossible to beat. Thanks 🙏🏽 for showing this budget offering in the Blue! Appreciate the effort & reviews.

I’m with ya 100% on finding interesting pieces in the 2nd hand market. My favorite watch that I own is a little Certina DS1 with a Roman numeral dial that has been discontinued for a couple years. It’s not even a model you can find on their website anymore but it spoke to me and I would’ve never found that piece if it wasn’t for looking on sites like Jomashop and eBay for pieces that aren’t right there on the front page of Hodinkee or A Blog To Watch.

I find Citizen criminally underrated and pretty much ignored by the watch snobbery community. Having said that, I haven't found this watch for less than $125 USD, so your price is a rare find. At $50 to 70, I'd pickup a second hand Victorinox field or military style watch.

Citizen watches are great, with Eco-drive and the quality they offer you get the best bang for buck!

Beautiful watch. At 42 mm a little large. I picked up a new bm8180 at 38mm for $75 om Prime day. More my size.

A watchmaker once said: "it's legit creating a great 1.000$ watch, but putting together a great watch on a 100$ budget... that deserves x10 times more credit." This works as x20 times for this Citizen Ecodrive AW5000-16L. Masterpiece!

It’s great bought it a few months back. I changed for a rubber strap so can wear in the pool. It’s my beater.

Update. Ordered both the Citizen and a Seiko SNZG. As much as I really, REALLY wanted the accuracy and reliability of the solar quartz, the Citizen is just too heavy and bulky for me. The SNZG just feels better on the wrist and looks more ‘natural’. The Citizen is a chunky boy. Guess Ill have to see how the automatic works out.

Look at the promaster tough; monocoque case, simple dial, 200m water resistant. Great watch, love the field watches coming out if citizen. I think it’s a 40mm though. Happy hunting!

still waiting for my citizen promaster aqualand bn2039-59e to arrive by november. i hope you'll be able to review that as well. i think im gonna get this one over a seiko flieger. i agree that all the details are just great.

Eco drives are awesome. I have a stiletto from 2011 and it still holds a full charge and lasts.

Just goes to show you don’t have to spend a bunch of money to get a tough ,accurate ,quality, great looking watch. I have a similar looking Wenger military style watch in black I think I spent about $50 for. Mine is not eco drive though. Very nice Peter, well done.👍
