I think a lot of us might underestimate the difficulty of adding knee joints. While knee joints help with articulation and posability, it also presents a physics problem as the weight of the upper body of newer LEGO Mechs are much heavier (compared to Bionicle and Exo-force). I don't think LEGO would ignore the request for knee joints, as perhaps they might have a prototype that actually has knee joints but it was not acceptable to other design standards as Jang had mentioned. I'll admit, I don't have very much experience on designing knee joints, but perhaps it would be an interesting to study to analyze LEGO hinges and joint pieces to see which would make a good knee joint considering all of the important aspects of joints, such as articulation, posability, strength, maximum weight, aesthetic detail, etc.

Usually, a combination of Exo-Force knee/elbow joints and friction-enforced Bionicle/Hero Factory joints should be good enough. However, the knees would get pretty clunky at that point and would diminish the appearance of the knees. A good alternative would be to keep the knees without joints, but put them at a 30-degree bend at least to at least simulate a natural pose both for walking and standing. Completely straight legs would be a bit weird.

ive made a couple mechs and ive always made it a goal of mine to add knees. ive usually used ball joints, technic pieces, or a combination of both. theyre a bit inconsistent, but they work. a thing to note though is the fact that my mechs have all been relatively lightweight. for bigger mechs, i would probably use double ratcheted ball joints. i dont really have experience with bigger mechs as ive never had enough pieces to build one.

8:19 my thoughts exactly; look at that molding. So intricate and small - unlike anything else LEGO has done (i.e. when lego does "skulls," they're usually printed pieces, with the exception of the Indiana Jones crystal skull). First thought that came to mind for a MOC, bury that "sword" part inside a car, and have just the hilt and the skull sticking out. Would make for a perfect hood ornament; perfect size and shape.

Another thing that that annoys me with Cole this wave is that he has gold highlights and not silver highlights like he had with the OG ZX and then throughout the series with silver highlights. They could have given Lloyd gold highlights this season and Cole silver highlights.

Yeah I agree, he has to get one shared with another ninja being Kai a popular character with a popular colour. It should have been a stone mech, since it is a Cole season, but since it's grey, it's not that appealing. I honestly prefer the sleek design of the red samurai side. I might have to get two in order to make it a full Kai mech.

despite the lack of knees, the overall standard fof lego mech designs has been raised so high at this point that this set- which today many would consider a 'standard' quality set- would have been considered the best mech ever if it were released like 5 or so years ago.

I'm bittersweet about Ninjago. My finances could no longer support this long-lived line and so the heavy decision was made to sell my collection. I think Season 10 was my final year. Looking at the interconnectivity of Season 13's sets makes me sad I'm not around to have built the enemy lava stronghold and savored the combined play environment. But I can still enjoy Jang's high-quality videos of them.

Jang, you are a great speaker/creator. You are the most articulate describer of articulation in the online English-speaking Legoverse. Your mention of both transparisteel AND transparent aluminum are much appreciated by the Star Wars and Star Trek fan in me, plus you took the time to explain how different the perspectives of Lego designers vs. end users/AFOLs/kids are and will always be. I must concur about the exposed pilot problem. The reason these need knees, apart from poseability, is to give the Minifigure pilots a way to climb out. Is there a rope or ladder? I always picture that, on a mission far from base, the mech would kneel to let its occupants egress. Also, every Ninjago fig should get a hairpiece every single time. Let's do this, Lego Group:)

I think it's fine because the knees are bent in such a way that implies motion, either crouching in preparation for jumping or crouching in defense. The problem with straight leg mechs without knee posibility is that they look lifeless, like they're standing there waiting to be powered on. I don't see that with this mech.

  • @IICVRSEDII
    @IICVRSEDII4 жыл бұрын

The reason for no knee joints is for stability right out of the box. Seeing as these sets are marketed towards a younger audience it's quite obvious as to why they dont put that extra mobility in. Mostly because it will increase production cost and it could also effect the stability of the build itself. If everyone is so desperate for these sets to have knee articulation make it yourself that's what the hobby is there for.

I feel like this is one of those mech designs that's very good in a vacuum, but the posability limitations knock it down quite a bit, and I can't help feeling annoyed that they felt the need to make it a majority-Kai set when in the show it's 100% Cole.

Great video as always Jang. I myself like this set fine for its price. It was bit of an letdown that there's is only room for one of the two ninjas accesories. Here starts the essay part on my opinion on posebility of big lego mechs: I personally feel that Lego is on to something wit these "pre-bend" knees. They were really close to perfection with the golden mech, now they just have to figure out how to scale it up to the current stannard size of "big mechs". (I am ready to accepts some trade off's I'm just desperate for some articulation to give them other good poses than standing up straight.) (Sorry for grammatic errors)

Biggest problem with these big mechs is that although they don’t have knees because of stability, people like chubbybots have made legs for the keeping everything else the same that looks and functions better, and shouldn’t change the cost much or at all. Edit: search up Chubbybots Instagram and you can find his latest picture is one of his upgrade of this mech, keeping everything relatively the same but changing the legs completely. It not has knee articulation, but is also stable and just has a better design to it too.

Mechs are my favorite. i was building mechs before Lego made them. Back in the 80s i built a few combiners using a trash-truck as a leg, a helicopter as an arm, etc. Do you remember TYCO blocks? They had some transforming robots: I had the helicopter and the car. They weren't great, but they had new parts that moved that Lego didn't invent. I also built Voltron Vehicle mech

I like the look of it certainly. I think the half rock look works well a really suits the half ninja half knight look of the whole theme. I also really like the theme as a whole. I won't likely get this because I'd rather have the connectable game sets but I think it looks very neat.

A pair of large ratchets, and then a sliding beam in the back that is at max extension when the leg is, hits the top of the thigh when the knees are fully bent. Or, similar, but with a sprung beam or whatever that piece is called, closer to the knee. I figure that'd help.

The sword has a very realistic skull on it. It feels weird to see that instead of a regular lego skull in a lego set.

One of the things that keeps being of consideration for me is that because video games have gotten so stuck into the standard of 60$ for AAA games they've been getting bigger and bigger but the price is generally the same, and its hard sometimes to justify a lego set over a game that can have way more content.

Great review as always, Jang! I would have preferred if the grey was black and a little bit of brown. The grey doesn't look that bad but it's not Cole's color (scheme) and black with brown would have looked way better.

In other words; if you want a mech so badly, get the Titan Mech from last year while it's still in stock. It's better than this thing as well as both the mechs in the Monkie Kid line. It's sturdy, it's stable, it has great articulation, and is good as both a toy and a display piece, unlike the oversized monkey, bull, and lava dude. Though this one IS admittedly the cheapest of the bunch and has a good price-per-part ratio, so it's not a total loss. Besides that, the issue I have with this thing is that it doesn't fit in with the rest of the wave. This is supposed to be a European-style high fantasy setting. What the heck is a giant robot doing here? It should have been something like a golem. It doesn't even come with any additions to the board game that the other sets include. It's like they just put this in because some higher-up suit demanded the wave have a mech.
