Soldiers - BBC Points West - 5th June 2024

Just a month after the start of the first world war in September 1914, 30 year old Serjeant John Smith from Gloucestershire and 21 year old Gunner Charles Lightfoot from Edinburgh were killed during the Battle of Aisne in France. Their bodies presumed missing in action. But now their remains have been identified in a cave in France after research by French historians and an MOD team in Gloucestershire. Next week they’ll be reburied with military honours in France. Our reporter, Steve Knibbs, has the exclusive story…
