Hey Jay, have you thought about insulating your battery box, it might help the cold at at bay and be more beneficial in extending the life of your batteries.

Or just put more foam around just the batteries themselves because it looks like his shed already has insulation?

I feel your pain. As you know, I have two different solar set ups at the cabin. I have the same problem with my garage solar that is set up on AGM batteries. I installed my AGM bank in a Styrofoam box that’s 2 inches thick. So far it has been helping, but I think the heating pads are the answer. Following… I can’t wait for the next video

Jay, you do not need the 24 Volt to 12 volt converter if you connect the 2 heaters in series across the 24 Volt battery. - if they are sealed cells you could super insulate them.
@OffgridwithJayandJen
Жыл бұрын
I never really thought about that and was not sure equipment worked the same way as batteries being put into series.....I will be insulating the batteries soon.
might also suggest a compost heating system for the shed along with insulating it

True.....if the size was right its a good idea
I've noticed before, but said nothing thinking there wasn't n issue. But, now that you have said there is or potentially a problem. I think insulating your building would help as much as the heating pads. Also if you insulated your building, the pads would work even better. Foam board and spray foam would work wonders in there. I would allow for some "take outs" for summer so as to not get the batteries too hot.

Seriously good option
That looks like it should work pretty well. I did something similar for a 250AH LFP battery in my wife's she-shed. It kicks on at 37 and off at 40, so the batteries are always warm enough to start taking a charge from solar. I can turn it on and off but have found there is no reason to. The draw is so small and infrequent that if you get just one sunny day a week that's more than enough to offset what the heaters use.

@@OffgridwithJayandJen - The temp controller I bought is called the DZS Elec Temperature Controller. It's a little tricky to use, but cheap. I am using much smaller DC heating pads (25W) so my whole setup cost right around $50, but that was with 4 small heating pads and I'm only using 2 of them.

Hey bud something you can do that I did is to add a wind generator to your system cause we both know that the wind is always blowing in Michigan in the winter time lol. I have a cabin that I have built that is in Elise and I have 1200 watts system right now and I'm going to upgrade that to 4000 watts this summer. I have the same batteries you and I only have 4 of them I will be upgrade them to I'll add 2 more. I can go to my cabin on a Friday stay until late Sunday and never have to fire up my generator I use the TV all my lights tools refrigerator and well. Just some feed for thought love your video's .
@OffgridwithJayandJen
Жыл бұрын
Would love to talk numbers with ya, if you send us a message on Facebook or email I would like to compare systems. Ours works well and no generator needed most the year, just during dead of winter
Food for thought. Remove the paper (resistance to heat transfer) and adhere the pad to a piece of thick aluminum foil (Heat conductor) so you get an advantage instead of disadvantage. Maybe later go with the Li Fe Phosphate? Just trying to help friends.
@OffgridwithJayandJen
Жыл бұрын
Appreciate that, the pads said specifically not to attach to anything conductive so it didn't short anything out. I'm thinking we will eventually do some lithium batteries inside cabin, but down the road once three batteries die. Lol
been thinking about this vid.Why not put a couple of small wind turbines in. ? just a thought. just to let you no i have my small bank of sola panels on the roof now and they are chargeing well. running one of my computers about 3-4 hr a day and all my lighting in my workshop is now fully sola. plus can use it to charge up batteries for my drills. will start on my next section soon.keep up the great work. look forward to seeing your next vid. phil from across the pond.

No need for a 24 to 12 converter, just connect the heat pads to the middle of the battery bank where it measures 12V. I agree too, an old freezer would make an excellent battery house, in fact the heat generated from charging the batteries might do all your heating by themselves.
@OffgridwithJayandJen

You should really think about switching to LiFePO. They store 50% more power then AGM. You are running heat blankets now so insulate your power box or move them inside. You have space upstairs
@OffgridwithJayandJen

Ya that might be in the future. We will see how long this system lasts as is before we make some total changes. Using the loft would be a good idea. 👍
