Sofia - One of Europe's Oldest Cities | Travel Tips for Bulgaria's Capital
Have you ever been to Sofia? The capital of the Balkan state of Bulgaria is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The city’s landscape is a blend of Eastern and Western architecture, from the Roman and Ottoman empires as well as Brutalist buildings from the Soviet era. KZreadr @Veneta Nikolova takes you on a walk through her hometown.
What is your favorite European capital?

What's life like over there and how affordable is it?

@@algae_rhythms things are getting expensive not gonna lie.. especially groceries. But compared to other European capitals it's still very affordable. Plus it's not crowded, so you can enjoy the city and what has to offer. Bulgaria has lots of nature spots, mountains, the coastline. I really like it here 🙂

It was Soviet Occupation, that changed Bulgaria and its population for worst, but not influence. Another question came to my mind - why did you titled your video "Sofia one of the oldest cities in Europe" but did not show anything in order to prove your statement?

Still a czar on these election, but hey can have it outside with closed doors on Europe culture capital event.
Alexander Nevsky is Russian, right?
sovietism is not socialism and has almost nothing in common with it. most countries today are more socialist by definition tbh
I was offered payment to like and comment on this video by scammers.
Sofia didn't change much since the transition to liberal democracy more than three decades ago. The city is still plagued by very bad (in fact broken or semi broken) pavements on 85% of its streets which is why people constantly gaze down when they walk. Not only does this reduce from the experience of meandering the city it is also a health hazard. If you don't look down you can easily sprang your ankle which is very painful (if it is accompanied by a fall you will need hospitalisation). The EU finally allocated funds specifically to repave the entire historical and trendy center but this is done the "Bulgarian* way which means it is taking forever to complete and it done unevenly so it is causing injuries and discomfort at a time the center is very busy (July - October). Another major problem that is arguably worst now than it was when Bulgaria was a socialist eastern block country is the mosquitoes 🦟 and other biting flying insects. Even at the height of monsoon season in India and Thailand I never suffered so many bites. The mosquitoes and flying biting bugs are very persistent and the itch from their bite is on another level which is why most people don't wear shorts and t shirts even in the height of summer.

Sofia is alright. It needs to modernize faster though - some of the infrastructure is horrendous. Edit: There are quite a lot of foreigners visiting, so surely they like it. Just watch your pockets because a certain ethnic minority is known for pickpocketing tourists. It's not rampant, but it happens if you're not careful.

@Georgi Bonev What's so bad about having an accent - we have people from all over the world working here and it's very nice to "hear" that diversity...
Contrary to what this travel blogger says the ugly buildings in the center of Sofia are not "Stalinist", rather they are the result of decisions made by the Bulgarian Communist party. Stalin took great care to control and plan Soviet cities (not only Moscow and Leningrad, also Kiev, Tbilisi, Baku, Yerevan, Kishinev etc.) so the center (and also the suburbs that are no further than ten minutes drive from the center) are beautiful and awe inspiring. The Bulgarian model was not Stalinist, not Leninist, nor Maoist. It was uniquely Bulgarian with all the corruption, disorganisation and lack of forward thinking that continues to plague the country decades after the demise of Communism.
The most racist backwards country I've been too. Broken old roads, loads of looks of aggression (from the men). Threats of violence because of your skin colour. Graffiti everywhere, worn out buildings. Outside the few nice buildings it's borderline third world. Don't waste your money.

I'm surprised. What's your skin colour? Where did you go? It's nowhere near 3rd world. The buildings aren't so bad.
Do you do that on purpose? The first two shots will not make visit any city? Of course, all you talk socialism and stuff. Seriously? Enough of this already.
Dirtiest air I ever seen
This city is so boring and depressing. The people look miserable. Graffiti everywhere. Then racism is like second nature to many of these vile lot. The rest of Eastern Europe is modernising with time and culture. This place will be left behind...
