Parents really need to wake up. I’m a teacher and I can tell you without reservation, parents are the ultimate block. I’ve heard this numerous times when speaking to parents about their child’s cell phone use : “He/she will be mad at me if I take it away or try and control it ” Game over folks. The people paying the cell phone bill are afraid of pissing off their own kids.

Parents don’t know how to parent. They want to be friends with their kids. They give them a phone, clothes to wear, and a place to sleep. That seems to be the extent of it for many kids. I teach 7th graders in the public school system and I have to deal with the phone problem all the time.

I think parents are aware of how to parent, but they have so much to contend with now, and they are struggling to find the right balance between all the various issues. I don't envy anyone bringing up a child/teenager nowadays. It must be overwhelming!

NO ONE can even HOPE to parent effectively if they are AFRAID of pissing off their children. Being a parent, and “doing parent things”, will inevitably “piss off” your child. That’s part of life.

I made the decision with my three youngest to not allow any 'personal devices', they have desk top computers in our lounge and they get two days to game on their computers per week, a total of around 12 - 15 hours on those two days. The rest of the week no screen time and heaps of library books. It works well. It starts with parents, I don't care what other families do or kids have, why buy into that kind of thinking?

Neither of them ised it for social media. They are older teens now and still dont use social media and don't want anything to do with it because they are aware of how detrimental it is for their mental health. At the school they also talk to them about it. I've always had conversations with them about it. I am very proud that my kids are not followers! When they were growing up I never sat on my phone. As my mom put it, why do you need a phone? You have no business to attend to and you see your friends in school 5x a week. If we needed to text or call somebody, we used her phone. We even had a landline phone as another option for communication. For games, we had Game Boy and Play Station. For other entertainment, we had cable TV to watch all the trending cartoons and such. We really had no reason to feel cut-off from anything in not having a personal phone. I will do the same for my future children.

I think where Joe is missing the mark, he's saying kids now don't want to give it up, and while that may be true, you as the parent have to enforce your house rules. If you're really concerned as a parent about this issue, you will do what's difficult for the betterment of your child. This is also a suggestion for those parents who have younger kids and aren't yet exposed to social media. If you make that choice beforehand, it becomes the norm. and what Jonathan is saying, if that becomes the norm for more and more families, you'll see an exponential shift in the near future on social media use by children.

Parents, please look into Montessori or even better Waldorf inspired private and charter schools as they facilitate low tech /no tech policies. Not only our phones and social media not allowed on campuses at schools, the schools also require that students are not on electronics, social media, and that sort of things throughout their school week which helps keep their brains open and available meaningful relationships, academics, and social communication in person, and they will not be feeling left out because their peers will not be on their devices either

This is a good approach. Bans don’t work, but movements can work. Either flip phones, or a locked-down smart phone (no social media apps) if a parent is smart enough to do it right. They can use a PC or tablet at home for basic social media when they’re old enough, and then they can do what they want at 18.

I live in South Korea and growing up most of high schools here tried "take away phones until classes are over". The unsurprising result was that it didn't work. Most students prepared 공기계, which is a sub-phone that has lower specs and price tag to hand it in to the faculty instead of their main phone. The flip phone thingy too, is something I have seen over and over again from my tutor days. Students would be forced to or try using flip phones to focus on other things than smart phone, but 90 percent of them ended up buying 공기계 just to access SNS. These things were already tried, and I have seen them fail miserably. This "Psychologist" dreams of such a perfect world where everybody accepts his ideals.

I homeschool my children, 10, 12 & almost 15. Younger two don’t have phones and 14yo has had one since 11, has none of the big apps and has always had huge screen limits (2 hours a day at first, three now). Only social media she has is Snapchat - which was given in the last 6 months. She’s been on a huge journey with it all and has very recently come to the conclusion that Snap has brought little positivity to her life and is putting her phone down more and reading instead. Even with such guardrails, if I had my time again I’d hold off for as long as possible (which I’m doing with my younger two)

I use my Facebook for sharing information and my film reviews as a freelance writer for our local newspaper. Never had a Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, or TikTok. The reliance on social media/smart phones began during the "pandemic" in my opinion. Keeping people locked in their owns bombarded by propaganda from televisions, laptops, tablets, and smart phones transformed the population into zombies lacking critical thinking. One of the best things I did for myself at that time was removing myself completely. I refused to watch the news, researched independent sites, and engaged in conversation with like minded individuals in various Facebook groups. It is a shame we have become a world relying on technological advancements rather than expanding our horizons intellectually.

Parents tried to send packed lunches but kids still sneakily got the junk food, obesity etc. Do you know how the school resolved it? Banned all junk food from the lunch menu. Hired a chef and the head of the school, didn’t care about making it easy for the staff, saving money or getting some exclusive deals from the fast food suppliers. Within 2 years, no kids are complaining and obesity has gone down and kids are healthier. Understand this and it will tell you how to deal with internet filth such as social media affecting kids

Now all these kids are anti-social and are hypnotized by their iPads. I feel kinda bad for the younger generations. OVERALL- it’s up to the PARENTS to PARENT their OWN KIDS. You’re kids are NOT your friend. And if you have trouble making kids then you need to break them in like a horse, as bad as that sounds.. it’s true. All my neighbors, my landlady and her staff, even the police and my GP. It's like living in the twilight zone, only it doesn't end after 43 mins. Shocking waste of life. The answer for me was to withdraw from all those people, I see them sparingly now ... because I tire of listening to _constant social-post bullshit_ or _trying to have a proper conversation_ with people who have the attention span of a gnat. You cannot tell a person living in a snow-globe, that their sky isn't the real sky. That is our species, they've doomed themselves to stupidity and I am just watching and waiting for it to end now. God help us all, it's shit. Kids grew up with it, they never knew how good life was before. It's worse for us adults who have memories of when people had value, and life was great. Not like now, it's honestly a nightmare.

Videos like this one we watched help to confirm cynical beliefs. It’s low hanging fruit. Easy to convince us things are f**ked because we’ve evolved to be cautious of dangers. Honestly….Most people are every bit as capable of meaningfully interacting as they were back in the “good old days”. They are out there. I was in a nightclub recently and hardly saw a phone in sight. Everybody was dancing and having a good time 😃. Same goes for people in my gym, and even some woman I was chatting to in a supermarket car park today. The list goes on.
