It has been said that Britain is a nation of shop keepers. The Post office was part of that solid but humble foundation. People trusted the post office and respected and admired the workers. The children's TV show 'Postman Pat' captured that perfectly. Destroy that foundation and you could very well destroy the belief in the nation itself. This is the kind of case that could well be the straw that broke the camel's back. If ordinary hard working folk believe they are expendable and so easily thrown under the bus then pray tell me why would they be loyal to their employer or country? "An empire does not fall when there are armies invading its borders. An empire does not fall when there are enemies at its gates. No, an empire falls when its citizens stop believing in it". Their instinct is to cover each other's arses; such that you don't see more of their monkey arses as they climb the tree. I must add, that this isn't about DEI (it's much older), they all do the same dance, regardless of background, once they are 'in'. Integrity is seen as foolish by them.

I accept full responsibility for the failings on my watch, and the consequences of those failings." are the words we need to hear and never will. The shameless blaming of everyone but herself is the most raw display of cowardice I have ever seen. How people with a complete void of character and substance ever make it into these positions of responsibility is the problem. At best, she simply didn't understand what was required of her job. At worst, she knew what was happening and lacked the substance to intervene.

The Help Desk was instructed to lie to the postmasters and tell them that no one else was reporting such problems. Obviously, someone high up in post office management told the help desk employees to lie. Who was that? Obviously, it was the post office legal department.

Best comment I've read so far. This is business as usual for our elites. UK, Australia, France, Canada, USA - you name it. The people at the top can destroy the the plebs wile they stripmine wealth all they want - it's been going on for generations. The difference is, in the era of recording devices, social media and mass communications, the little people can get informed real quick, see what is going on and ORGANIZE. The miniseries that has ignited public outrage and anger about this particular scandal is a good example of that. The Post Office Scandal is one of literally dozens and dozens of similar heartless, selfish crimes perpetrated by the managerial class with absolute impunity. Their rapacity and greed know no limit and will never stop - until it is stopped. Working people in the West (for the first time in history) can see what is going on without the distorted lens of corporate media controlling the story, and with the ability the organize and take action directly, without needing unions or corruptible "bosses" to organize for them. Look at the Truckers in Canada and the wonderful Farmers across Europe. Our lords and masters don't know HOW to deal with that, so the overreact and fumble. If the elites trashing our fellow citizens and institutions for personal gain and power had any sense at all, they'd realize just how exposed they are. Tsars and Kings with absolute power have been overthrown by peasants - don't forget that. A bunch of dithering, selfish bureaucrats and management types will crumble overnight when faced with serious for real opposition.

I remember when I started in my job forty years ago. On advice of a mentor, I quickly established myself in a side role, which took me into the training side of the company rather than management. That meant attending a lot of management meetings over the last 30 years and that means getting to see managers in a true light. They will openly lie to protect themselves from taking the blame for anything that doesn't go right or to claim the credit for anything that does. Duplicity and doing whatever it takes at the expense of whomever it takes is the order of the day. An honest and genuine manager is like an honest politician. Their honesty will only be used against them as a weapon by other managers to undermine them. I tell all my trainees that if a manager ever asks them to do something that is against process or off the books, they should always get it in writing first. It's amazing how many times managers tell staff to do things and if the staff member asks for it in an email to confirm it, the manager goes and asks someone else to do it instead. Then, if there's any blowback, they completely thrown that person under the bus and claim they misunderstood what they were instructed to do. In short, I wouldn't trust a manager as far as they could spit.
