'HOW Could You Not Have Known?' | Former Post Office Boss Paula Vennells Grilled At Horizon Inquiry

Former Post Office boss Paula Vennells is quizzed today on her role in the Horizon scandal.
The disgraced ex-chief executive is beginning her three days of evidence to the Horizon IT inquiry amid claims she covered-up the Post Office’s knowledge of bugs in the faulty accounting software.
The inquiry is shown text messages between Ms Vennells and former Royal Mail boss Dame Moya Greene, thought to be from around January this year, in which the latter says: “I think you knew” about the problems with the Horizon system.
Asked why she does not answer Dame Moya’s question about how she could not have known, Ms Vennells tells the inquiry today: “I didn’t not answer that question; I was very concerned because I was aware that it was not good practice to be exchanging texts in the middle of an inquiry.
“It wasn’t that I should or shouldn’t have answered her question.”

@jamesrussel. Her supposed Christianity is yet another layer to this, that leaves me incredulous. If she really believes in Christianity, what does she think will happen at the pearly gates one day?! Does she believe if she just says 'sorry I didn't know' and 'I don't recall', she'll just be waved through to heaven?! Or maybe she thinks if she gets around to admitting the truth privately to her God (and 'repenting' then), she'll get a free pass. Though I would suspect loopholes like that don't exist, with an 'all-seeing, all-knowing' God, i.e. doing whatever you want (including continuing to lie, and distress the victims further), because you'll just get around to 'repenting' on another day. Sure, plenty of people fake being religious, for some sort of power. But why would she? She was getting plenty of power, status and money, in her other job appointments. So why would she need to fake being religious, and spend her rare free time, becoming a lowly vicar? Maybe part of it was to project a 'moral' persona - but I'm not convinced. She was well-respected in the elite (enough to get her jobs she wanted), without that. Or she could have sought 'moral status' in something else, that was more interesting (or at least, more interesting than preaching a religion you don't at all believe in - charity work, perhaps) So I'm assuming she probably DOES hold religious beliefs. Which makes it surprising, if she DOES believe in hell.

No she knew- it just wasn't in her own best interests to stop the prosecutions and admit fault . Not only because of the effect on her career, but because the PO wouldn't then be able to keep taking the accused people's money, and they'd have to be compensated. So she would then not be able to take this money herself, which she did in bonuses. She clearly didn't care about the people whose lives she was ruining in any way. She's not sorry for she did , as you can tell from her performance here.

  • @crazyhai8155

She's only guilty of being 'incompetent', in terms of her morals and ethics. She ISN'T incompetent, in the sense she didn't 'know' - or that she was 'too trusting'. The evidence was overwhelming, that she DID know- and indeed, she actively interfered (on multiple occasions) to try to hide the problem. There's the email (in 2013), in which she said she'd accept the PR guy's 'steer' (after he emailed her about limiting a planned investigation into miscarriages of justice, because otherwise the sheer number would make the Post Office front-page news). Hell, she even attacked Susan Crichton (a legal advisor) in writing, after Crichton didn't knobble an independent investigation (by Second Sight) in the Post Office's favour (an investigation that DID find multiple problems, in 2013). Vennells complained that Crichton put her 'professional ethics' before the Post Office's reputation 🤦‍♀️ God forbid somebody should try to apply ethics as a first priority, over a business reputation!!! After that, Crichton was banned from board meetings. I could go on, listing the dozens of other evidence pieces against Vennells. But they are far too lengthy to write in a YT comment. Vennells has never harmed me personally, but my goodness. She has deeply offended my sense of justice, on a level I didn't realise I had. She's infuriating, how she's STILL trying to lie her way out of it. 😡

@@crazyhai8155 What I find interesting as well is shes not just lying so that she avoids the legal ramifications of admitting anything , she so arrogant and deluded that she thinks people might actually believe her, so she does the crying, and the comments like 'I wish I did! [know]'. She doesn't even realise playing on peoples emotions isn't an option at this point - everyone hates her guts. She is clearly extremely narcissistic. Every time there's someone like her in the news - absolutely shamelessly immoral, greedy , entitled, arrogant, hypocritical, and deluded, ruining hundreds or thousands of lives, I always think 'Another f*cking narcissist'. Trump, Boris Johnson (most of the Conservative party in fact), Jeff Bezos. It's these guys who are ruining the planet and people's lives.

I think what happened was they initially couldn't believe the system was making mistakes, then it got to the point where their story was so established no one wanted to believe they were convicting people on the basis of faulty data. Eventually they had invested so much time and effort into protecting the Post Office and some of these scum didn't want to have to potentially repay bonuses or face actual consequences for their negligent behaviour and hoped they could kick the can down the road a couple more times so their involvement would be hidden from view. Unfortunately, this enquiry was set up and it's not going away until this whole sorry mess is dragged into the daylight, Paula Venells' et al should be imprisoned and then be sued civilly by the sub-postmasters and bankrupted.

If you notice all that bollocks Sunak talks like passing a law to squash the subpostmasters/mistresses convictions but hasn't told the PO to pay those people their money back along with interest and the value of their houses that they lost. He's hoping the public will be satisfied with what he's done so far. The answer is that most behaviour (99%) is driven by fear and pain… seeking safety.. and also they in organisations a group mentality is involved of competition and representing only your organisation. Then there is also the milgram Experiment. 60% or more of people will electrocute at over 300 volts just because an authority figure tells them it’s part of an experiment and that no permanent harm will be done to the person.

All that happens is that the general public has to pay the lawyers huge fees and the report is forgotten about in a few weeks.
