So You Wanna Be A Sports Medicine Doctor? || How to pick your primary specialty

I love my job as a Sports Medicine physician, so I am all for helping people achieve the same happiness I have in this awesome career path!
I try to answer all the questions I can from the DMs I get on social media, but I have gotten this question so many times, I thought it deserved a video of it's own. I hope this is helpful to all my aspiring Sports Medicine doctors out there! Let me know if there are more questions about the specialty that you guys want videos about.

I find this vlog to be interesting as well as informative to folks going into SM. Although I am in education ( health & sports), I truly appreciate what you do and the advice you give as I have two members of my family who are medical drs.

Loved it! If I would have been smart enough (and not gotten my chronic diseases), I would definitely have wanted to be in either sports medicine or something in the pediatric department. Sports medicine because I was an athlete and loved sport so much. And the last one because I love children so much and would love to help them in some though / their toughest times. Whether it would have been working in pediatrics as a general physician or in the hospital like for example being a pediatric oncologist. I would have loved one of these 2 specialties. Though I can’t be sure. Since a lot of people, when they go to med school, they often end up in a totally different specialty than what they would have thought when they started med school. And I am not even sure which one of these 2 I would have liked best. So maybe, if I could have gone to med school, I would have ended up in something totally different. Either way, this was some great advice!! So here is a thank you on behalf of everyone who wants to do sports medicine and will have benefit from your advice! ☺️😘

For some reason I can't seem to post my "long" comment. Long story short. I had a car accident (dashboard injury), my PCP diagnosed it, and then I stuck with orthopedic specialists for 3 years, during which I got worse. After those 3 years, I got sick of it and went back to my PCP who sent me off to a neurologist, who diagnosed me with CRPS, which is rare, and can be overlooked. It renewed my faith in my PCP and family medicine by a thousand fold.

@@DoctorCrystalMD Awesome! It is a rare condition, still, in Belgium it is, and I keep forgetting that. But OTOH it is so important to think about after any injury! Thank you both so much. Thanks Crystal. And you go, Heather!

I'm starting med school this year and recently got into sports medicine because of the focus on musculoskeletal cases. Never shadowed a sports med doc so I'm not sure what their day-to-day would be like, but at first I only wanted to go into primary care. Would PM&R be more helpful or primary care?

Did you have clinical hours going into college? I'm applying to a program that will allow me to get me into rotations in clinics and different areas of the hospital next year (my senior year of hs). The program would get me 24 college credits, and would cover the first few semesters of college anatomy and physiology so I can either graduate early or double major. Some of the schools I'm applying to ask for clinical experience so I'm hoping this will cover that. Also, does what college you attend have a big impact on getting into med school? My top choices rn are Case Western and Johns Hopkins, but if I were to go to a smaller school would I still have a similar shot of getting into a good med school?

I did not have any clinical hours going into college. I started volunteering in the ED in my summers off from college, which was my first clinical experience. That program sounds great!! Don’t rush your way through college too fast though. Take the time to enjoy the experience 😊 As far as the school you go to impacting med school admittance... I can’t really speak to that bc I’ve never been on a med school admissions committee. I do know that my med school had the largest percentage of students from our two largest in state schools (I didn’t go to either of those). Not sure if it’s just because people who plan to go into medicine tend to go to those larger schools, hopeful for more opportunities? I think going somewhere that seems like a good fit is most important bc that is where you are most likely to succeed!
