How to Become a Sports Medicine Doctor
I get SO many DMs about this, so decided to make a video to hopefully provide some answers. This video is about Primary Care Sports Medicine in particular... orthopedic surgeons can also do a Sports Medicine fellowship.
As you probably know if you're here, I am a Sports Medicine doctor. In my job, I take care of division 1 athletic teams, while also working in the student health clinic. I absolutely love my job and get SO excited when people message to tell me they want to do what I do one day! I hope this video helps shed some light on what it takes to get into this amazing field.
As promised, here is the link to the video of my full medical journey:

Very cool spelling out your journey! Awesome to see professionals trying to lead the way for others🙌
Thank you for this. Great video! Very informative. Im a 4th year med student in Ireland and have always wanted to become a team doctor. You're one of very few doctors who actually talk about this in youtube. Glad i found your channel. Keep on doing this 💯😁

My colleague is the head sports therapist for the UFC. As great of an opportunity that it is, just know that you really are at the beck and call of the athletes and where they go you go, good and/or bad. Younger in my career it was enjoyable but many now out as they proceed to have families .
This helped me a lot!! I really want to be in sports medicine but didn’t really know how to get started so that you for making this video it really helps!!!
Great video thanks alot, just graduated high school and going into college, this video was much needed and helped lots :)
As great as a progression that we have, it’s imperative that you make your choices wisely. Making intentional choices of where to attend undergrad and medical school will have some life long consequences good or bad.
Short and sweet. Very informative much love from 🇸🇪 Sweden👍🏻👍🏻❤️
thank you so much for this! planning to pursue this someday and i'm glad to find this video. :) cool poster btw! (is that andre braugher and jodie comer or my eyes are messing with me 👀)
Loved the information! Thank you! ❤️

Amazing video Doctor Crystal!! Greetings from Greece and from an recent Medical Doctor. However I have a question for you.Why didn't you mention Orthopaedic surgery as a choice for a career in Sports Medicine?Isn't that possible there??
Had to close caption the vid when she said wife so casually lol, great vid

Made a video this past week inspired by this question!
Great great video. I’m not sure if you already answered this question but can you tell us about the lifestyle of a sport medicine doctor compared to other specialties? Thank you.
Would it be beneficial to (during undergrad) work in the sports medicine/training room at your school as an assistant athletic trainer? Would that count as clinical experience?
Hey! Amazing video:) A friend of mine had a huge injury yesterday.. What is something I can tell him to lift him up? I don’t want to pity him but I also want him to feel better. Any tips?
Do you believe it matters if you start at a community college? I am at a community college & I’m starting my second year there in January! I just switched to pre-med for sports medicine specifically! I’m excited but so so scared.
I just had my MBBS and doing a part time job now and presently in China please can you guide me on the steps to follow I want to be a sports med doctor
I've been researching sports med physician vs PT so much. Most of the links I've clicked on though say: If you want surgery go MD, if you don't go PT. This seems like such a generalization and potentially not accurate? Do you do surgery? If not, what are the biggest differences between the two careers?
Just curious, since you work in a school environment, do you also get the same amount of time off as they do? Holidays, summer, etc.??

Sorry I’m so late to respond! We go down to lower hours and less staff when the undergrads are on break, but we are still open because there are tons of grad students around
Hey, Dr. Crystal, I love sports and I want to become a sport doctor. Should I take health and science while undergrad it my first year in college?
What do you do before med school
What's the reason of blood in urine after exercise,Walking 3 hours speed?Thanx

Hi, I have a question im trying to become a sports medicine doctor , currently in community college getting my AA in biology . Is this the right path and what would be the next step?
may I if you are comfortable enough ask how old you were when you graduated and became an official sport physician
Hi, nice video. I have a question. A primary care sports medicine doctor can replace my family doctor or do i need to continue seeing both?
@DoctorCrystalMD

Depends on the physician! I would say that mosttt of the time you will need to continue to see both
How much do you get paid ? 😮
What about orthopedics can’t that get you into sports medicine as well
What did you major in for undergraduate and is pre med a good major to major in ? Please help!!! I’m struggling to find a college because of major like i don’t know if I should major I. Sport medicine or pre medicine 😭
@DoctorCrystalMD

You can major in whatever you want as long as you take the prerequisite classes!! Major in what you are most interesting in learning 😊
What about Orthopedics?
You said your first job was, and I quote "PRETTY MUCH" your dream job...what school would you rather work as a team dr for Dr. Crystal😏

Lolll not the team. Every job has SOME flaws
What about private practice or partnership, maybe even building your own team? I guess that's more on the "entrepreneurial" side of the job, isn't it?
What grades do you need to be safe to get into sports medicine program
@DoctorCrystalMD
3 жыл бұрын
Sorry I’m so late to respond! Grades don’t much matter when you’re at the point to apply to sports medicine...It’s mostly what you did during residency. That being said, grades do matter for getting into med school and sometimes residency!

@DoctorCrystalMD

I’m not on any admissions committees, but in my opinion, it would be difficult, but not impossible. If it’s your dream, there are still ways to get there even if it’s not straight to med school (retake classes, post bacc program, etc)
Do we have to go college before med school?

@@DoctorCrystalMD thanks 4 responding! U probably wouldnt remember but about a year ago i had cataracts and asked u a question about them. Well in the meantime ive had lasiks and my vision is better than it was when i was 5 years old! My vision is now 20/20! Its like having a new life! After being blind 4 40 years a can literally see an ant 30 feet away! People always talk about the good old days. If this was 1972 id b screwed. Im happy living in 2020 with the medical advancements!
