"So you're just a racist?" | Caller's view on knife crime shut down by Oli Dugmore
Oli Dugmore hears from a caller called Kevin, who claims that black people are more 'culturally inclined to use knives' than white people.
The discussion comes amid Idris Elba's claim that the government applies more ‘focused thinking’ on tackling XL bullies than on the issue of knife crimes.
His comments came after being presented with new LBC analysis back in January, which revealed that five children per day were arrested for carrying a knife in 2023, including children aged 10 - the minimum age of criminal responsibility.
According to LBC's findings, published for the first time today, around 1,500 children aged 16 and under were arrested for the possession of a knife or other sharp implements such as screwdrivers, carving forks or shards of glass over the first ten months of 2023.

As a man who is mixed and grew up in 90s, pretty poor , with 3 brothers who are mixed or fully black. There is so much more to it; we haven't been arrested or used a knife. I have a feeling that it is the youth of today with drugs, nice trainers, phones, etc. London is something else entirely when it comes to crime. The fact he thinks black people use knives, just because criminals use knives is astonishing. Imagine if we put that stigma on all English men. They all drink Stella and watch footy and beat their wives. People reasoning skills are just ridiculous.

And your analogy doesn’t work either. He never said all black people are knife criminals. So your analogy of saying all English people are ___ doesn’t make any sense. A proper analogy with England and drinking would look like this. Young English people have a higher incidence of anti-social behaviour on holiday in southern Europe (compared to other European countries) , due to the drinking culture in English society. That’s essentially akin to what he has said, re: culture. What is it with these utter straw man’s?

I grew up in Northern Ireland in the 80s and 90s, lots of people got shot, stabbed, and knee capped, none of the perpetrators were black, almost all of them were disaffected, poor, uneducated young men, who grew up in extremely deprived, and heavily segregated, housing estates. I would imagine many of those descriptions apply to the perpetrators of knife crime in London. Race is not the issue.

Rapid immigration in the later 90s and beyond has transformed society from the one you grew up in. In addition, whilst poverty generally has a strong relationship to violent crime, black cultural groups commit knife crime at a per capita rate that vastly exceeds other groups. The rapid growth in those groups have created an extremely complex issue for the UK (in addition to other wealthy economies) and this requires intelligent research and action. Two things can be true: violence is often strongly related to poverty and some racial groups commit higher violent rates that go beyond poverty. We need to address both in addition to almost halting new arrivals in the absence of strong economic reasons.

Although poverty can be a major driver to this kind of crime, it's a lot more nuanced than just saying that it is the core reason. Gang culture is definitely another factor which can be adopted by any race (such as the white working class of Liverpool) in London it has been adopted by the black community. If poverty was the only factor then places like Cornwall or the small working class towns in the Midlands would be the worst for knife crime as they have much lower prospects than Londoners. Race isn't the cause but it is certain cultures within those communities.

@@CiceroSolono they don’t. There are more poor people who happen to be black in those areas so the numbers are higher. London is a densely populated city. Also before mass immigration people in areas like south London were all white, lived in slums in extreme poverty if you had a job it would have been in a factory or down the docks. stabbing and murders where just as prevalent per capital, no coincidence that “road man” is a modern day version of “highway man” a robber who’d prey on victims around the city boundaries and would usually gut their victims like a fish.

You invest in the youngsters and it will make the country a better and richer place going forwards for everyone the same as education. I listen to Oli's show regularly at the weekends...and he is a very impressive operator (I also tune in to PoliticsJOE). He has energy and has obviously worked hard to really know about stuff. I contrast this with many mainstream presenters who are better known and he seems miles ahead in terms of being a communicator of genuinely useful information. I admire how he still manages to engage with this caller without losing the rag. I wish him all the very best best in his career progression- I think he is much needed in this increasingly out of balance world.

Does the caller realise that knife crime is more rampant per capita in the NE compared to London? London doesn't even register in the top 10 regions for knife crime. Go check out the government websites.

A lot of crimes are unreported, over 50 %. Crime is rampant, with robberies by knife and with a vehicle like a moped at sky high rates. It increased when stop and search was contested. So there is your solution.

It's amazing how little information about her departure is available. It feels like a deliberate closing of ranks. This station is a broad church with many different stances taken by a number of presenters...but there doesn't feel to be too much solidarity about. I've enjoyed Sangita's excellent contribution. She's been very honest, very direct...and she has proper experience built up in the world of journalism. Nick Ferrari has expressed quite a few views on the opposite end of the spectrum from Sangita- why hasn't he been sanctioned on an equal basis?

So is just blaming the whole thing on “poverty”. Bangladeshi & Pakistani poverty is the same if not higher, yet knife crime nowhere near as high, is it. I bet you would have absolutely NO issue saying that different culture in attitudes to drinking in the UK, is what drives the bad behaviour of young males on holiday in med countries, vs other European countries. Almost certainly at someone point you have thought this, or said it. Is that bigoted against British people to say such a thing?

They are more violent but its not because of their skin colour, its because of the culture they come from. There has been extensive studies on this matter, in the black community in London for example, the more generations of black Londoners that were born here the less likely they are to fall into violent crime. The first generation immigrants are 89% more likely to commit violent crimes. The nonsense about it being because of poverty has no basis in fact what so ever..

This is pathetically childish. If poverty causes people to stab each other please explain how. Cultures exist. They are different. Some differentiate themselves from others on the basis of race. Some differentiate themselves based on place. Some may use age, music scene, favourite 2 wheeled motor vehicle etc. The culture of knife crime in Glasgow was not replicated in other equally poverty stricken areas of Great Britain or Scotland. There is a culture extant in London in which knife crime is very prevalent. Whether that is due to race or something else is beside the point. Blaming poverty is ridiculous because many of the murderers and their victims have siblings who do not commit knife crime. Are their parents giving them all the money causing their brother to take up arms and stab other kids who dress like them and listen to the same music but just so happen to be from a different area ?
I am very curious as to why Sangita has disappeared from this channel. I do hope that it is not because some unjust political pressures were prioritised over her talents as a journalist due to her doing her job better than most that i have witnessed. He gives hope, relief from frustrations, and she cool as taboot. Fingers crossed she back sooooon.

@@evolassunglasses4673 This is really the problem. As long as it can be generalised then the real issues never get tackled properly. When we used to have an issue with football hooliganism everybody agreed that it was mostly a subset of young, working class, white men who were causing the issue. It's annoying that we have the authorities being call out when young black men are being arrested for carrying knives only for the same people to then start complaining about all of the young black people being stabbed and how 'the system has let them down'.

It isn't a British problem - our rates of assaults and murders with knives is the same, or lower than, peer nations. It's a political narrative, and media sensationalism, problem.
The credibility of LBC has completely gone with the refusal to allow Sangita back on air following her truthful words on Israel and the IDF . I have always had a lot of time for LBC and many of its programmes but the suspension of Sangita is an all time low .
Im black and knife crime isnt a part of my lifestyle thanks Kevin 😅

Exactly mate i've no degree at all from any college or university but still the facts tell the story and yet blame it all on poverty i've lived through poverty in my life at times but never thought i'll stab someone for a tenner

am from Glasgow and the knife crime was due to rep. ' hes a stabber stay away from him' or 'dont start with him hes got nothin to lose'. its has nothing to do with colour as it was just the type of people in poverty stricken areas fighting turf wars or plain simple revenge over small matters of bravado

What was dismissed? He provided other examples of gang/violence amongst sub-sections of the UK that diverge from the sole variable of "race" but indulged in the same behaviour. Why don't you actually respond to that where the caller didn't perhaps?

Is this a James Obrien clone? he interrupted and then steered the subject to Glasgow (irrelevant) then had a tantrum when the caller steered it back to London and real experience REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE. Also to claim that harsher prison sentences dont stop crime is a disgrace.
