"Candle In The Wind" was written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin in 1973 in honour of Marilyn Monroe. Elton later used the same melody but changed the lyrics to pay tribute to Princess Diana in 1997. It was changed to "Goodbye England's Rose".

Yep, rewritten for Princess Diana's funeral, "Goodbye England's Rose." I had to wonder if you picked this out for Queen Elizabeth's passing. I remember watching Sir Elton perform this for Princess Diana back in 1997, without a dry eye in the house, and wondering how in the world he kept it together when he sang it. LIVE. In front of everyone not only in that church, but globally on TV to literally the entire world. I'm wondering if this will be a part of QEII's funeral next week. All that said, I still prefer the "Norma Jean" version you've reacted to here.

Marilyn's real name was Norma Jean Baker, hence the repeated line "Goodbye Norma Jean". This song brought tears to my eyes in 1973 & still does. Marilyn's legend continues, the fascination with her continues with yet another new movie. I'm not sure anyone ever gets it right. I hope she's truly happy on the other side. 💙☮💙

Her actual real name was Norma Jeane Mortenson (that's Jeane with an extra E). Her parents were separated when she was conceived, but her mother still used her 2nd husband's surname on Marilyn's birth certificate. Her real father is believed to be Charles Stanley Gifford, the foreman where her mother worked. Norma Jeane later adopted the surname Baker from her mother's first husband, .

Kudos to Amber for her analysis! She nailed the essence of the woman in the first verse... way before Marilyn was mentioned by name (besides Norma Jean in the first line but still) describing a lost soul allowing others to take advantage by directing her life. A life lost and a legend that continued to grow.

I felt the same way. I did a paper on her in school so I did a lot of research about her. Mind you, I was in high school in the mid-late 90s, so the research was done at the city library because we didn't have the internet then. But I do remember seeing newspaper articles about the fact she was found in the nude. I kept thinking, why does that matter? She's in her room, on her bed, in her own house. I'm 15 years old trying to figure out what is going on. I mean, in my opinion, the fact that passed away seemed a bit more relevant but, yeah. It's just rude is what it is. Just rude and unnecessary. She went through so much in her life, she struggled and fought for her life and career, only to be reduced down to being found dead and naked. "She is worth a hell of a lot more than that."

  • @JustTanya.

@@txheadshots I agree. 100%. She really was treated like she was disposable. I wish she would have been able to hear this song though. Maybe she would have been able to know that many of her fans like her for who she was and the work she did. She was beautiful inside and out. A tough life and horrible people around her and she still fought like an alley cat to keep her head up. I don't for a second believe her death was intentional, I believe accidental but I think God just stepped in to give her some peace.

I agree with the other comments, the version he did for Princess Diana is deeply moving, they were friends and she was the peoples princess and the whole world was heart broken when she was tragically killed. He performs the song at her funeral and shortly before you see him ,you can see other people like George Michael come in. It was deeply moving and just what we needed. The video you reacted to was indeed about Marilyn Monroe and that video is beautiful also, they both died at age 36.

Two of her most well known are "Some Like It Hot" which also stars legendary actors Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon and is widely regarded as one of the best comedies of all time, and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" which is her most iconic role. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is Elton's best album, a masterpiece double album, and Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is the all-time classic song off it. It is my favourite Elton song and my favourite song by anyone ever!!, and that's saying a lot. It is a master class in memorable, heartfelt lyrics by Bernie Taupin and amazing musical arrangements, varying of speeds and instruments from start to finish. A sad and haunting masterpiece. The finale is supercharged uptempo rock.

n the Eagle Vision documentary on the making of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Taupin said the song is about "the idea of fame or youth or somebody being cut short in the prime of their life. The song could have been about James Dean, it could have been about Montgomery Clift, it could have been about Jim Morrison ... how we glamorise death, how we immortalise people." According to Taupin, the song is more of a take on fame and celebrity than an ode to Monroe: “I think the biggest misconception about [this song] is that I was this rabid Marilyn Monroe fanatic, which really couldn't be further from the truth. It's not that I didn't have respect for her. It's just that the song could just as easily have been about James Dean or Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf. I mean, basically, anybody, any writer, actor, actress, or musician who died young and sort of became this iconic picture of Dorian Gray, that thing where they simply stopped aging. It's a beauty frozen in time". In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2014, Taupin disputed the implication that he was a Monroe fan: "She is absolutely not someone I admired a lot as a kid or anything. She was just a metaphor for fame and dying young, and people sort of overdoing the indulgence, and those that do die young she just". On the song itself, he stated: "I think it's one of the best marriages of lyric and melody that Elton and I have ever put together. But it doesn’t change the fact that I wasn’t particularly enamored by Marilyn Monroe". The single release of the original song reached No. 11 in the UK charts in 1974. At the time, it was not released as a single in the United States as "Bennie and the Jets" was chosen instead.

Just like those who say certain artists are “underrated” when whatever artist it is won multiple awards and massive amounts of money on their music and they were NEVER underrated EVER at any time in all the decades since their music first came out, it’s just arrogance. Terrific, mellow, emotional song about MM. I remember when Elton rose to fame and he well deserves it, along with his writing partner, Bernie Taupin, who is a musical genius. However, if you want a hype song for next Sunday, react to "Yours Is No Disgrace," by Yes. The bass line is amazing, from the opening chords to the end, and the rest of the song, which is mind-blowing, is mostly about war (and greed), which is what football is all about, on a sporting level, a simulated version of war. And, it's a masterpiece, right up there with Roundabout.

"Candle In the Wind" (Goodbye Norma Jean)" is a tribute to Marilyn Monroe who's real name was Norma Jean, written in early 70s and at least a decade after her death , by Elton John & his long time writing partner B. Taupin. Despite of how the world seen her as very beautiful and glamorous and someone that had everything, she lived a troubled and lonely life despite all of her relationships & the ppl surrounding her, her success came at a price. She had a very hard childhood then once she made it in Hollywood, like so many others, she was forced and controlled by the industry to become someone she wasn't and to do some things maybe she wouldn't have done other wise, changed her entire identity and appearance, having to pretend to be "dumb" although she was intelligent and she was looked at as a as a sex object and not really taken seriously, she then fell into addiction which is what is supposed to have been the cause of her demise at the age of 36. Altho Elton John says in the song he was too young to have been able to have had the chance to know her, it's clear that this song comes from a place of empathy and IMO he can relate to the treatment and life of a highly famous celebrity through his own experiences and perhaps also to things in his own personal life and childhood. This song humanizes Marilyn and honors her in spite of the publics negative views and disrespectful comments and reports about her at the time of her death. It's very heartfelt and sensitive to Marilyn Monroe the woman aka Norma Jean. Also in 1997, soon after the tragic accident in Paris that took the life of Princess Diana, Elton John revised, re-recorded, and released another version of this song, "Candle in the Wind (Goodbye England's Rose)", in tribute and memory of her, which he did know in real life and admired and respected with most of the world...her death was felt and mourned globally, she too also lead a lonely life and also left the world too young too soon.

I agree about "Empty Garden", although our host Jay won't like it, as a ballad. The thing about "Empty Garden" that gets me is that by then, I had already given up on Elton John producing any more valid, worthwhile music. The bum had even gone Disco on us, fer Pete's sake! Furthermore, I hated George Harrison's tribute to John Lennon. It was vapid, shallow, unfeeling and lacking any evidence of any affection that Harrison may have had for Lennon. If there were any other musical tributes to Lennon at the time, I have forgotten them. But Elton and Bernie seemed to travel back in time to the height of their powers, to tear "Empty Garden" out of their souls and onto the airwaves.
