Their song “Outside” will give you chills. But do the version featuring Fred Durst. It was live, the first time it was preformed and he created half of the lyrics on the spot. I think it’s better then the studio version.

One of 2001's absolute highlights. The soft, pretty verses crashing into the slow heavy chorus with that wall-of-sound guitar noise, (but it's never gratuitous noise; it serves the song perfectly). This song got me through a rather tumultuous breakup around this time; a lot of soul-searching was done (usually with this song in the background, which helped sometimes).

If you like his voice accompanied by an acoustic guitar, check out Aaron Lewis- Outside (Aaron Lewis is the lead singer of Staind) he did it with Fred Durst (lead singer of limp bizkit) so maybe that can be your intro to them. I love Staind! I call this a recovery song. The song is very deep. The band Blue October also sings songs that I call recovery songs. People have a tendency to look down on people who are drug addicts/alcoholics. We're people too. Everyone has their demons. This song delves deep into the feelings of how an addict feels. You can tell he's in recovery because he's accepting responsibility for his actions. One of my favorite lines is "I cannot blame this on my father, he did the best he could for me." I'm so glad that y'all were able to do a reaction to this song.

This song reminds me of a particular time for me. Incubus' Drive was from around here, as well as Whatever Tomorrow Brings, by Lifehouse. All felt like a moving on of sorts, acceptance of melancholy progress. Tool, System of a Down, had the same grittiness. There was a rawness, that not everything is OK this time was steeped in. Such deep emotion.

Now we're talkin! Staind loosely fits into the late 90s/early 2000's genre called "nu metal" that also contains bands like Disturbed, Korn, Godsmack, and Sevendust. I HIGHLY recommend "Here to Stay" by Korn, "Voodoo" by Godsmack, and "Black" by Sevendust. They are insanely awesome. As for Staind, this song definitely gave you the more mellow side of Aaron Lewis's voice. Some of their other standouts are "Mudshovel", "Fade", "For You", "So Far Away", "Believe", "Not Again", and my personal favorite, "Outside". (Another category this has been labeled as is "post-grunge". This song was released in 2001. The album it's from, Break the Cycle, was phenomenal.) Great choice!

Actually this song was not written from personal experience. Arron Lewis, happily married (his wife is the woman in the video) shortly before the band hit big, would purposefully veer towards darker human emotions/situations whenever he wrote songs for the band. Many of their could relate to the lyrics, some a little too much and one very tragic incident did occur as a result of the pain one fan was feeling

Staind is one of my favorite bands. My mother sat up one night in 2004 and listen to the whole CD on the porch and when she came into the house she lay down in the bed and moments later, her ex AKA my youngest sister's father who had passed away, sat at the bottom of her bed and told her that that CD was supposed to remind her of him and one of the songs reminded him of his daughter. And then he got up and walked out of the room and was gone. She said it was so real that she felt him sit down on the bottom of the bed and she felt his hand on her leg but he had passed to your prior. She then went outside and listened to the CD and heard it in a new light. Another thing is my mom passed away a year after this and the day she passed away........ My sister was another thing is my mom passed away a year after this and the day she passed away...... His daughter which is my youngest sister was having a dream that morning and he came to her in that dream and told her you need to wake up honey your mother is in trouble....... And in the dream my sister said what's wrong and he said honey your mom isn't here you need to wake up and then all the sudden it was like a TV screen that goes blank and I was banging at the door and that's what woke her up and when she opened the door I was crying and she said what's wrong with Mom and I was surprised but I immediately told her what happened and she told me what happened in her dream.😢

Staind has been categorized as nu metal, alternative metal, heavy metal, hard rock, and post-grunge. In 2001, Rolling Stone outlined the band's relationship to the nu metal label: Staind got their first break in 1998 when [Fred] Durst signed the band to his Flip Records.

Aaron Lewis, lead singer, performed at a local theater that is pretty well-known, tons of famous people have performed there from Willie Nelson to everybody you can probably think of, called the Zeiterion Theater in New Bedford Massachusetts, in an acoustic performance several years ago now. I was only with my girlfriend for a few years at that point and we went to see him and he was Bloody amazing. He premiered a few of his country songs at that concert and yes Aaron Lewis lead singer of Staind went country! Such a great voice and talent!!! I will have to tweet you some of his country music to react to but in the meantime the song "Mudshovel" is what set them on the path to becoming one of the better rock bands of the late 90s early 2000s!!!

When this song came out it was played constantly at work on the satellite radio. Played to the point we would yell "IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE WE HEARD THIS SONG"!! Every time it came on!! It was one of those songs that seemed like it played 2 or 3 times an hour! It's good in moderation... lol

I have heard several takes on the meaning of this song. My favorite is that it is about a man who has lost himself and is coming back to the Catholic faith. If you listen to it from that perspective, it all fits. It’s as if he is talking to Jesus.
