isn't it Amazing the connections we discover?? I think that's awesome he has a lathe that used to belong to your Family. As for your KZread popularity I attribute that to several factors. 1 you have a great personality. You tend to positive and Enthusiastic about everything even when it doesn't go right. 2. you have great patience in helping all of us understand what it is you are doing and how things work. 3. all these things combined create an energy that you spread to all of us. The simple little jokes like the no Bozo signs and some of the history of the shop talking about your dad and grandad. It's the little things like that which creates a bind with all your viewers. And we thank you for all of it

Agreed. The time wasted by breaking bolts makes everybody's job miserable, and then making the machinist's job harder by trying to use Easy-Outs in an ill-advised way only means you're cooking a turd sandwich to be eaten by both you and the machinist undoing your carnage. Tips and instruction on avoiding them to begin with, can't ever be enough of.

Exactly...Most people skip the lesson on the proper use of leverage and torque and go straight to "If tight is good, over-tight must be great"...Abomb would be a good example of when not to use 100% of your muscle power when tightening (and loosening) a fastener.

  • @Patriot1776

Part 2 of this SNS, Abom gives a perfect example of preventing carnage while test fitting threads he just turned, in that he had a hydraulic end-cap bind up on him during a test-fit, and instead of forcing it the rest of the way when it binds up, he unscrewed the cap and checked the threads on both the cap he's test-fitting and the threads he just turned, preventing the cap from galling and likely now being stuck on, and boogering up the threads he'd just cut and was almost finished with.

I'm not right familiar with that particular compressor but there may be a coolant line welded to another flange that would be bolted up there on install. usually there is a water cavity up around the motor and the heads as modern freon runs some pretty high temp/pressures.

I would love to see your process for verifying your cylinder square. I think the only way I could do it would be to put the shaft in the 4jaw chuck on the lathe with some soft jaw grips then indicate it till it was showing 0 run out at various locations on the shaft then after it was dialed in indicate the face/base for runout. It would be time consuming to get dialed in but it is all I have to work with. Would be important to not go crazy on jaw tension so as not to distort the cylinder square but since there would be no cutting forces i think it would be fine.

That's a Carlyle 06e or 06d compressor. They don't come from the factory with over length bolts...actually just the opposite. They don't want you to use the shipping flange bolts for the installation so they give you short bolts. This compressor was probably rebuilt locally and the person that closed it up before painting it either screwed up or they had a new guy doing the close out. I've replaced hundreds of those in all kinds of situations in the last 45 years. Carlyle is/was a division of Carrier Corp. it was a little startling when I saw it in your video....you don't usually see those in your situation except for flood coolant chillers.

P.S.: One time or the other I find, that the channels I once had subscribed to because of their unique approach "advanced" from their original great features to something completely different and "common" (analogous to machining --> road tripping, but in other areas) - always was sad about that.

"I gave him the speech and told him not to use an E-Z-Out." Does that speech start with, "Don't use an E-Z-Out on it, bring it to me so I can use an E-Z-Out on it."

True integrity based on honest effort and hard work. That's why I watch. Beats me why people voted for Trump when he represents the opposite of this. His credo seems to be: "Say anything, do anything, bully anyone to get what you want, then deny everything and go after anyone who questions you."
