Saturday Night Special 129: Broken Bolt Removal, Abom Torque Shirts, Daily Machining Clips
Ғылым және технология
This week I have a part with a broken bolt to work on. I'll use the mill and show how I remove it. We also have some viewer mail, a photo challenge entry, and some up coming projects I'll be working on. Also a couple shorts clips of some of my daily machine work.

I love watching these videos of removal of broken, stuck or just stubborn hardware. They have given me the confidence that if you just STOP and either take it to the right tool or if you have to. Find someone with the right tool (mill) You often can save yourself a lot of grief and in most cases a lot of $$$ by not destroying the part by drilling the broken bolt off center and getting into the threads. Or worse, breaking off a easy out in a poorly drilled hole. These tapered easy outs have become less and less my first choice when dealing with issues like this. My recent purchase of a Wells Index 745 Vertical Mill has open my eyes to the fact there's a lot better way to recover broken or seized hardware.
This guy is a really nice person I love his machine song he has good shows I never had nothing bad to say about it I enjoy watching it and I hope there's more shows or machine shops and I'll be watching all the time that's all that being said there is your dinner
Great video on broken bolt removal. I can watch a million of them.
Great to see you with a new friend, as good as your viewers are, nothing replaces quality companionship. Great video by the way
That's got to be the best bolt removal i've ever seen. That tap chasing it and gliding along the threads was so satisfying! Hell yeah. :)
You are amazing. I love watching your videos.
You de-helicoiled it!
Those are awesome drink cups with the metallic logo on the jet black background!! Definitely better swag! :)
The removal of the bolt reminded me a bit on a dentist, digging around in somebodys mouth. ;) Very cool methode to repair a broken thread. Nice Video!
hey adam, I follow alot of channels that do machine work. I messaged you awhile back and you are the only content provider that even comments back. that means alot. most of my favorite T.V. shows come on Sunday night but Saturday night I watch every second of your Saturday night special...I have some things I would like to send to you. it's nothing glorious but it's some HSS tool blanks for turning and several HSS endmills. I know you have better tools than that but that's all I have to offer. I just enjoy your videos and appreciate you taking the time to make them.

Good video Adam, thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
Re broken bolt removal - Excellent video!! I learn so much from your videos Thanks
Great job on the threads. Thanks for the videos and your expertise.
Adam, Awesome broken bolt removal. I really liked how you pulled the bolt thread out at the end. Job well done.
i love watching the threads unravelling out of the hole like that, good job brother.

Free tools! Awesome viewer generosity. BOTH tools are very useful. I'm sure that you will use them often. Hats off to the nice guys. And cool video, Adam: nothing more satisfying than a "Got-r-Out". Dude can continue his work process.
You have inspired me to be a better person, to put forth more effort in my own job! Keep up the videos
Great job, Adam, the most entertaining 30 minutes on KZread or television
Nice work . Always enjoy your video,s.
That IR temp gun is much nicer than the one I was going to send you. Glad you got a nicer one!
I love your machine shop, it's great!
Nice save, to get those threads out! It's great fun to have a T-shirt no one else has, here in Oslo, Norway! I've met so many people coming up to me, asking me about it. Quite a few of them have a genuine interest in - or are into machining themselves too. A great way to meet new friends in the "family"! Planning for some photo sessions for the photo contest this weekend...;)
All new.. everything! Cups, threads, shafts, and gal! Nice!
Man, awesome videos. I'm binge watching them. Keep it up. Your top 3 best manual machinists I've ever seen. I'm a machinist in the navy. Let me tell ya, I'm overwhelmed watching what you do. Thanks man

Great job on the getter out Adam. Picked me up another shirt. I think the price is perfectly reasonable for the quality of the shirt and the ability to support the channel through it. Got a couple of older ones that can now be relegated to shop only use, so perfect to replace them with. I wear them a lot to fly in for work and you would be surprised how much interest they get - chatted to a couple of your other viewers in both Orlando airport and Kansas City airport which are my two frequent ones.

nice to see your new gal there...
Abom new subscriber here I'm not a machinist but my dad was and man I'm a new fan of yours! Great stuff even for someone to enjoy that's not in the trade. Thanks for your hard work and sharing it with us!
Love the flag in the shop. It has encouraged me to get one for mine.
I admire your work, I am here in Brazil. 👍
I really enjoyed the sound the keanrs boring mill made when it was passing over the 4 bolt holes in the face of the flange and it would start and stop cutting 32:04
Those cups are badass man!
Thanks Adam always nice to look at your shows. I have ordered 2 T-shirts and realy looking forward to buy those good looking cups that you showed.

Another great video Adam keep up the good work.
Nice video ,as usual. Good to meet Sarah also!!
Good job on the bolt. I've a full set of left hand drill bits, easy outs etc. One never knows what will work!
That IR gun is great to use with your BBQ. You get a good idea where the hot an cool areas of your grill are.
great video as always!
Awesome job
Bad ass! I wish I had the skill, the knowledge but importantly the time.
Great show. You seem happier lately.
Nice job getting the broken bolt out. It's always a bonus when using a left hand drill bit and have it turn out but you still "won" in the end. Jeff

Nice work Adam.
Good end result Adam
Very good, I hardly ever get a thread to come out that nice in the engine shop.....Dave
Another excellent tutorial. That worked really well. Ever since I broke a stud off the front cover face of a Jaguar XK120 engine back in 1963 I've been interested in different ways to remove broken bolts and studs. I'd love to see someone use X-tractalloy. Marine mechanics often use metal disintegration on big engines at sea. It's an amazing method, but needs expensive equipment, I believe. In any case your method really worked well and seemed very appropriate for the job at hand.

Darn Adam, when I saw the title "Saturday Night Special broken bolt removal" I thought I was in for a treat watching you do some serious gunsmithing! LOL

Nice job! I've removed many broken bolts and one that always comes to mind I did similarly but with a drill. The main reason it sticks in my mind is because I stuck that thread through my knuckle by accident when peeling it out of the hole. You live and you learn, right. Lol.
Chuck will be waiting on his royalty check for using his "Screwy Ball" on camera. LOL
super cool! please more

A friend of mine used to remove 6" high grade capbolts with the allen heads broken off in the same way. The bolts held steam turbines together.

Great job with the get-er out Adam.
Would love to know more about that job with the Kearns boring mill, looks interesting too. Apart from the fact that it's an interesting solution to the problem.
I live in Battle Creek MIdont know Jeremy but its cool to watch a video and see something like that!
hey i missed the shop life tshirt. they look nice we need them back for Christmas purchases.
Nice addition to the shop! you dog you :-)
Adam make sure you tie a string to that 10mm collet because we all know if it is marked 10mm it gets lost just like the sockets! Great video buddy keep up the great work.

You've got to be aware that different surfaces have different emissivities, so unless this is taken into account you'll get different readings for items at the same temperature. These cheap IR thermometers usually have a fixed emissivity setting of 0.95, which is the figure for human skin regardless of colour.

Yea, and with a little experimentation, you'll find just the skillet temp you like for eggs and such. It can 'aid' in finding HVAC heat/cold leaks both summer & winter. I find a lot of A/C cold squirts out under doors with excessive lower gaps. As at least one other poster noted, emissivities are another ball of wax you should read up on... especially if an actual temperature reading is important. Don't forget, you can grab temps of moving stuff (within reason) as well. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emissivity en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared_thermometer

awsome very precise my first choice is washer extra thick my dad taught me never fails when i change rollers on cat rails usually abunch break those inner strips that cat use inside for backup are made out of the hardest steel i have seen cant even retap so i just take 1/4/2strip bore hole weld on broken bolt spry aerokroil hit back and forth with hammer till turns free but then i,m not the machneist you are very precise work on that broken bolt
Nice getter out job Adam. On the pricing of channel support items, I think Doug over at SV Seeker has the right advice to potential buyers. He states the stuff he has is "marked up" and if you can't afford the item please don't buy it. For those of us who live outside the US the cost of international postage is something we just have to pull up our " big boy pants " over and live with. It is a cost that is outside of your control so don't knock yourself out over it. If people want to help out in some way, how about letting the Google ads run completely or click on the ad so Adam gets a little revenue boost from them. Cheers Eric
What an impressive array of tools and machinery ... and not an IC or transistor in sight (apart from the DRO, that is!)
You found the tap wrench for $5. Where I live good old American tools like that are apparently solid gold. Guys around here would want new + 20% for that thing.
i have found that the working end of a file driven into the broken off nipple and then turned out with an adjustable wrench down close to the work so the file won't break works pretty good. I've got a log splitter with bronze nipples for the hydraulics that break off flush with the hydraulic cylinder, and that method works to remove them.
With winding out the thread remnants, or messed up HeliCoils. I've gripped with needle nose pliers and turned counter clockwise to wind the helix onto the pliers so that they get collapse away from the wall and onto the pliers.
luv you vids
A Hemostat is a good tool to pull those threads out, mainly for 1/2 and lower.
good. thank

Good lookin gal there Abom!
Tricky but nice!
I heat broken bolts with a torch. Touch them with wax (crayon, candle, etc). Capillary action sucks the wax into the joint. Do that a couple of times and they come out.... Old school trick that has yet to fail me.
31:32 If you can't turn the part, turn the tool instead. Lathe turning and milling truly are reciprocal operations. Great vid!
get Sarah in the shop!
Great video again Adam, I enjoy them all. Just ordered the new t-shirt, I think $20 is a good price. Didnt mind paying 16 bucks to have it shipped to Norway. Its my second Abom shirt now. Keep up the good work. Spend a few days on a terrible internet line down in Italy reading through your entire Machine shop thread on Practical Machinist. Been following you on KZread a few years, but never read how it all started. Great read....

Way to go Adam
made it look easy
Have you ever tried this method? Since the bolt appeared to be broken off fairly flush with the surrounding surface they can often be removed by welding a nut to them. In the past I have removed bolts by placing a nut (slightly over sized in relation the the bolt size) directly over the stud and then welded it to the stud itself. The weld will not "stick" to cast iron and heats the stud up in the hole which normally breaks the corrosion loose. I have extracted studs as small as 5/16" using this method.

Norman May The welding trick only works sometimes. Many times after trying the welding trick 3 or 4 times I've had to resort to the mill it out of there method. If the bolt broke while they were taking it apart, it means the bolt either bottomed out in the hole or it seized in there...in either condition the welded nut will just break at the weld. Milling it out of there seems to work all the time. Even if there's an easy out stuck in there...it can be milled out with a carbide end mill. No matter what, broken bolts are an exercise in patience. ;-)

Marcel LeMay I was a mechanic for 25 years. When I would have a stud break off in a manifold of a late model Z28 I prayed the welding a nut method would work. If it didn't I would have to take the head off. Late model Z the engine came out of the bottom of the car with the trans. A lot of cars do that now. What a bitch. But remember we all are crooks and rip off little old lady's. Lol

Hi, Sarah!
Nice footage with the bolt removal! Chuckling to see the only remnants of that bolt left were the threads to peel out with the pick and pliers, and you saved the hole's threads too! XD The pump housing in the boring mill was brand spanking new too it looked like, all a raw casting. Looked cast iron too, so hopefully its only going to be used in freshwater, otherwise it ain't gonna last hardly any time, unless that paint is epoxy-based and is on the inside as well as the outside, as I've now learned about that stuff from watching Keith Fenner's 'Clam Pumper' videos.
@Abom79

That's the second of those pumps I have faced. The application requires 1/4" removed for fitment
@Patriot1776
8 жыл бұрын
That makes perfect sense. If that pump's going to be having salt water going through it, hopefully the customer has got their corrosion protection already figured out, otherwise another one will hit the shop to be done in just a few months. But hey, their loss and better job security for you if that's the case! :D
