Snow Storm Overnighter- January Canoe Camping 2023
Winter camping in a snow storm! I tagged onto a trip that Johnny planned at the last minute. The temps have been near 0c in NS so we have water and fortunately it didn't ice over while we were out.
The goal of this trip was just to get out into the woods and cook some good food and see how our gear can withstand a snow storm. The forecast was for about 15-25 cm of snow... I would say it was in the area of 15cm. It never really dumped down, but was sustained for most of the trip. I took the tent and slept amazingly with my Nemo Tensor and Hammock Gear TQ... it was only -2c over night.
Johnny was staying for 2 nights but I only had time for one. The wind on the lake was worse than I had expected, and being on the second largest lake in NS (mainland), I was a little worried about the return trip solo. I found out that my leave from work was cancelled for the return trip day (had to work that night), so I decided to leave extra early in order to hopefully get back home and not be storm stayed.
The meal was far better than I would have imagined. Bacon wrapped chicken breast stuffed with brie, with rice, peppers and mushroom. The brie and bacon grease ended up making a broth and it all came out a bit like a stew in the cast iron oven. I wish I could have got better video of it, but it was dark and steamy when it came to filming it, but you may get an idea of how it came out.
Johnny did make it out the following day and said the wind dropped a bit for him as well.
As always, thanks for watching!

I wish I could have stayed the second night with Johnny, but even getting out for 24 hrs is better than not at all! Thanks for watching
Superb scenery Kris but my heart was pounding as you crossed the lake. Loved the snow shots and the chicken dish looked delicious. Think a corn beef hash would work for another time. Tilly and Speka tend to steal the show but you and Johnny picked a great spot for camping. Loved it……..

Thank you! I wish I had stayed longer on day 2 as there would have been more footage of the morning sun in the snow.
Your Toller is a beauty! I had one for almost 16 years. What wonderful dogs they are.

I know your concern those ultralight kevlar canoes are easilly influenced by the wind i always start paddling in nearly the opposite direction and usually end up where i was supposed to some how 😅

Proper enjoyed that Kris! Would love to have camped/hammock in the snow but would not have enjoyed those waves! You know how nervous I was when we went ha. Oh and hot corned beef is a winner!! Can’t wait for the next video.

I think that having a second person in the front balancing the weight as well as forward thrust would have made it a. quicker and b. easier. I wouldn't take you out in that weather in the winter in that big of a lake. :)
awesome trip you sure you guyz are not irish you look like celts ah well great trip classsssssss

Yup... She turned 5 this year and absolutely loves being out in the woods.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. Gaspereau lake can be bad for wind as well in the main part of the lake. I go there camping a fair bit and lots of great camping sites if you know where to go. Would love to get out this time of year for a camp but my gear is definitely not up for it

Thank you! I don't think my tent is up to the weather, but my hammock can take me down to -14c. I think I will stick to smaller water if the winds are up in the future in those temps. I've never camped on Gaspereau but it looks like a good spot!

@@thecoffeefuelledwoodsman yes it's a great spot. For the most part, you can stay close to shore and get pretty much any where you would like to go. Just sacrifice a little time
This was so cool to see, I've been hurting all this crazy "winter" we're having, knowing I could go camping, and I haven't been out yet. That open water was just weird to look at with the mid winter scenery. Sorry to hear about that missed coffee, that's pretty rough. Have you tried a double blade in the wind? I'm a firm double blader now after last summer I impressed myself with it.

You are very welcome... I think a double blade would have been a good idea for that day. I don't mind paddling in rough water, but add the almost certain death had we fallen in.. urgh. I think a double blade would have been way better in those conditions (reduced fatigue on the one side and could have balanced the waves better I believe). That's a good suggestion for my next trip.

@@thecoffeefuelledwoodsman add in the almost certain death 😂 ya that was pretty crazy without a dry suit far from shore!

What length of a double paddle did you get? I have heard they have to be on the longer side…
@CanadianSledDog
Жыл бұрын
@@saltedbiscuit yes they do, I use a 240mm which is just enough but 250 would be better, and for anyone over 5'10" I imagine 260 would be ideal.
