Sniping Feral Goats | Long Range In The Wind | Things to consider in Adverse Conditions
Please also check out Jake’s Channel- Chase The Wild NZ.
Here is some behind the scenes conversations when setting up a long shot, or even a medium range shot when it’s windy. Practice and gaining skills to read wind well will improve you’re effective range and success. It’s important to do this correctly as it’s critical to insure the animal is taken cleanly. There’s a lot of patience and discipline to do this ethically. Never be afraid to turn down a shot if the conditions are to challenging. Please feel free to comment. This is a large topic and I think we have a great opportunity in the comments to share skills and experience. If you have tips and tricks please feel free to share. Thanks for watching, hope you enjoy.

I think I know your background training. I did it in the 70's. Judging wind them days was the hardest skill to master. Always was impressed with the the skills of judging the wind at Trentham. Technology helps but it is still in the skill and discipline of the shot that is presented

Love the video. Well done. We do some LR on coyotes here. Mostly 600 yards or less. Our shots are required a lot faster as they seldom be still for more than a few seconds. IT’s experience and fly by wire. Sometimes we can bait them with dead calves so they can give more time while feeding. At least we don’t have to worry with retrieving them lol.

That is marksmanship! Knowing your limitation, mastering the fundamentals and trash the f**ing Kestrel. So great to see and hear you working… I do the windcall very similar - divide it into 3 segments 1. at shooters position, 2. between muzzle and target, 3. at the target. Make and average of the three segments, adjust for wind angle and you are good to go as long as you have a good printed drop chart with wind values…

I don't know anything about goats. With that said, it seems like you guys are taking care of the issue in fine fashion. We don't have a feral goat problem here. Feral pigs on the other hand is a problem we do have. Great shooting.
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting

Thanks mate. Yes the pigs are certainly a harder problem to solve due to their nature. Goats are pests but still a great resource and good eating. 👍
If you want to eat it, in my book you should not waste what you kill if in any way possible, better get close so you can walk there in max 15 minutes (you will probably underestimate) to start gutting/cooling timely.

Yes your right it’s a very important thing to assess, especially hunting at long ranges. Could be a real issue in some terrain. Valid point and one that’s probably not talked about enough. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. 👍
Very good informative video, thanks for that😊. When you do your velocities for working out bullet drop; Do you cronograph with moderator on or a naked barrel? Unfortunately my crono is a strap on and I can't get it to work with my moderator on! Advice please. 243 Tikka using 90grn ELD X bullets achieving 1/2 MOA at 50yds and 3/4 MOA at 100 yds at this point in time.
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting

Hi, That’s a great calibre/ projectile combo. I always take my velocity’s with my suppressor on if I’m using one. This is because the suppressor has the potential to change your velocity a little, but it’s not by much usually. Iv found it can be around 20-30FPS but depending on the suppressor there may be no change. There will however be a point of impact shift , as adding a suppressor will change the rifles harmonic’s when it’s fired. So always sight your rifle in for whatever muzzle device your using. Depending on your equipment and purpose, in your situation I would take your velocity without the suppressor to get a start point. I would then verify your velocity by shooting out at 400 yards. Measure the difference of the point of aim and projectile impact. Then adjust your velocity in your shooting app so it matches your actual bullet drop for that distance. This is something I do anyway to double check my data. It doesn’t have to be 400 yards but I would recommend it’s far enough to see the difference in bullet drop, but not too far where conditions are starting to effect it badly. Obviously good shooting conditions are better for this. Please note there are other variables and adjustments in your shooting app that change bullet drop besides velocity. Bullet B.C etc are things that can be tweaked for fine adjustments but for any large changes it is more likely velocity. You may already know some of this so I do apologise if I’m covering old ground . Hope this helps. Thanks 👍😁

800 yards is Carlos Hathcock territory. Only people who understand ballistics and do a lot of shooting can make long range shots on game ethically. These New Zealand hunters are in the 1% and I take my hat off to them.

Thanks. Yes I believe everything deserves a quick and humane harvest. I have equal respect for the animals I hunt. Every shooter can work up to these capabilities, it just takes practice, reliable gear and some discipline around taking the shot or not. If you’re seriously interested in doing it send me a message and I can help you get a start at it. Details are at the end of each video. Thanks for your support 👍👍
Appreciate this and all your other vids I’ve watched; thank you for bringing them to us! I’m not a hunter but keen to get into it; wondering why the top / high neck shot was good shot placement (Vs mid neck or elsewhere)? Comments appreciated! Cheers

Hi, I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. Great to here your interested in the sport. I’m glad you asked that as this is not typically a shot I would recommend. Yes it does work very well, but not on all animals. For example a pigs spine runs through the middle- low neck and this shot would have hit nothing but muscle and no vitals. This being a goat there is almost no chance of missing either spine or jugular. In all honesty I would simply recommend chest shooting unless there is a specific reason to head/ neck shoot. I will often head or neck shoot to save the meat from damage, but only at ranges I’m very confident I can do it effectively. Thanks for watching 👍😁

great comments on how to shoot long range. using a suppressor do you have to use subsonic rounds
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting
Жыл бұрын
Hi , short answer you can use either from a suppressed rifle, but subsonic rounds are not really suitable for long range. you can use fully subsonic rounds to make it very quiet or supersonic rounds which are quieter than no suppressor but you still have the sonic boom of the bullet breaking the sound barrier. For long range I use full power super-sonic rounds. Thanks for watching 👍😁

Do you guys dial for the wind or just hold ?
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting
Жыл бұрын
Hi, I personally hold off for wind compensation. If it’s too far off to hold easily it’s too windy for shooting animals. If I’m shooting out a long way on targets I might dial but mostly I don’t mind holding up to 3 moa for a wind hold. Cheers. 👍
What app do you use for your ballistics
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting
Жыл бұрын
Hi, I use several depending on the rifle system and application. I mostly use the Hornady 4DOF app which would be my recommendation if your using their products as they are all pre listed. If you don’t have a dial up scope and are used holding over, Or using other products the Strelok Pro app is a good one with a picture of reticle hold over etc. Good for teaching new shooters. The Shooter app is also good. Hope this helps. 👍😁

Hi, yes I’m glad too. Truth is because of NZ having no natural predators and everything we hunt being introduced, hunters here are doing conservation every time we harvest an animal. A very different situation to most countries. It would make no sense to take our hunting rifles. Of course common sense is hard to find these days though.😁 thanks for watching much appreciated.👍

Hi Chris, yes your right it really tests the skills sometimes. I also find it can be very humbling shooting paper or smaller gongs at distance . It quickly puts you in your place if something isn’t perfect. I use a 9.5” gong to train with or a 15” with a 6” centre gong so you know when you hit the bulls eye. 10” is the size of the vitals on the game I hunt. So regardless of distance if I can’t hit it I’ve found my limitation. A lot of shooters use larger gongs out further when they train but it defeats the purpose , it may only be a 2 moa gong but the animals vitals don’t get bigger. We all hear about the longest shots, but we don’t often here about those bad days out training where for whatever reason We can’t hit it past 600. The Conditions are king. Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated mate. 👍😁
