The 308 is an underrated cartridge in the USA, I think, where lots of shooters have to have the latest 6.5mm or Achley Improved cartridge to make them happy. My Dad's hunting partner carried a Winchester Model 88 in 308, and probably killed 30 elk with that rifle. So, rock on, Dudes. Keep shooting the old 308.

Yes I think it’s easy for people to get caught up in the hype of advertising. Yes there’s some great new and efficient cartridges coming out now and we are lucky to have such options. But people seem to forget that the 308 was the benchmark of the short action for may years and if it’s still dropping game cleanly can one really argue if one’s better than the other. A lot of the benefits of the 6.5s etc only come into effect past what most people consider normal hunting ranges anyway and the 308 to these distances hits like a hammer for its size. I must say the 7mm08 would almost be the best all round mid sized cartridge however I chose the 308 for the subsonic capability with the Hornady subX projectiles and it is very efficient out of the short barrels. Cheers 👍😁

NZ has to be one of the BEST if not THE best country to live in for outdoor pursuits and quality of life. I am an Aussie, but spent many years living up in the far Northern Canadian High Arctic - and that was literally died and went to heaven outdoor life, but it was EXTREMELY remote - fly in only Inuit communities. NZ has pretty much EVERYTHING, except the ocean is freezing. The hunting, fishing, hiking, climbing, mountaineering, skiing, boating, spearfishing etc is outstanding. And the cost of living isn't out of control, plus "society" there is safe, normal and people are nice to each other. Wife and I are considering retiring to NZ from Sydney.

Jolly good show. Just finished building a T3x Lite in 308W myself. Dropped it into a CF stock that was made in NZ and will break in the barrel and start developing loads tomorrow. I plan on using the 168g ELD-M and maybe the 168gn Sierra TMK as a backup option so your clip is very reassuring. Won't be doing as much longer range stuff as you guys in NZ so Hopefully the bullets still perform well closer in. 2206H will get tested first.... Well done and keep up the great work.

That’s great to hear. If your using a standard 22” barrel and consistently shooting inside 250yards, or shooting heavy game animals I’d recommend the ELD-X. It will still expand reliably but will hold together a retain its weight to ensure sufficient penetration at closer ranges. The ELD-M is almost the same bullet but doesn’t have the controlled expansion component and is better suited to longer ranges wear velocity is lower. If your shooting light game you’ll probably get away with it but it will produce very large damage and possibly not exit. Of course If you’re using a short barrel like my rifle where the velocity is starting low (2531 fps) it will be a great combo. Hope this helps. Good luck with your project. AR2208 goes great also👍👍

Just came across your channel. Good show all around. Curious your thought process using match grade bullets vs hunting grade? Great shooting and appreciate your comments regarding finding the right recipe for accuracy as opposed to “pushing” the load. Thanks again!
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting
10 ай бұрын
Thanks I appreciate your feedback. Not all match bullets are good for hunting, however the ELD-Ms are a softer constructed projectile that expands well at lower velocities. They are well suited to longer ranges and/or out of shorter barrels where velocity is lower. They are not suitable for shorter ranges where velocity is higher as there is a risk of over expansion and lack of penetration. However you can be smart about your aim point and avoid bone at short range to insure sufficient penetration to the vitals. If you are only shooting lighter game it will also be sufficient but meat damage will be large. I use larger weight projectiles for the calibre to ensure firstly there is enough mass to carry through to the vitals and also then have the benefit of a higher BC projectile with more energy down range. The higher weight bullet also keeps the velocity manageable to help reduce the risk of over expansion up close, while providing reliable expansion at the longer distances. Please note this is a balancing act of velocity, energy, projectile construction, target resistance and accuracy/aim point. The more target resistance ( or larger the animal ) the harder the projectile can be and still expand well due to the more violent impact. If you’re shooting very large animals ELD-Ms may not be suitable at all, unless at longer range only, and definitely not for any dangerous game etc. Hornady does not recommend the ELD-m for hunting, instead use the ELD-X. Each hunter needs to look at their situation and decide what will work best for them. I know that these ELD-Ms work extremely well in the situations I encounter and iv never had them fail at any range but I’m careful of shot placement accordingly. Sorry a long answer I know, but it’s a big topic. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.👍👍

For what game do you use these bullets? I bought a box of factory 30.06 Hornady Eld-x 178gr, only shot a deer with it, but I feel its to powerful/violent for smaller animals. Maybe moose or bear is the game for it?? Pigs also maybe, but in the northern part of Sweden there isnt any. Or is it our generally short shootingdistance that gives it it's explosive result? Usually within 100 meters or less when we are hunting?? The thing is that it groups so good in my old Husqvarna 640 30.06... Better then all the Norma or Sako bullets I've tried..
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting
3 ай бұрын
Hi, yes you are correct. These projectiles are mainly designed for longer ranges. They are a softer construction designed to expand reliably at long range when the velocity has dropped. However this is why they expand very aggressively at shorter distances. I personally think they are a great bullet but would only recommend them if you consistently shoot out to 250yds and beyond. Be aware that up close on big tough animals with lots of “target resistance “ with 3006 velocities you may have them over expand and lack sufficient penetration to get to the vitals especially on angled shots. Or as you have found, completely destroys smaller animals up close. You may be better to use a bonded type projectile or something similar for the larger animals up close or a more traditional lead tip to keep the expansion manageable. Thanks for your support. Happy hunting 👍👍

Why does our man here choose such a short barrel? And does the silencer not negate the dimension and weight savings, or perhaps it’s over barrel?
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting
10 ай бұрын
Hi, there is no benefit to the ballistics of a rifle using a short 16” barrel unless you are using subsonic rounds. I use a short barrel on this particular rifle for the convenience of fast handling and weight saving. It is a over barrel suppressor and the short barrel allows having the suppressor while maintaining the rifles balance. I do use longer barrels for my long range rifles however with the right powder choice you can keep the short barrels producing reasonable velocities. Thanks for watching 👍😁

Hi, Yeah some of the boar can be pretty bad but a lot are fine, it depends on their diet too. I always check them over along with all of the animals I harvest. But especially pigs as they are likely to pick up diseases if they are present in the area. Check over for general health condition , wounds/ infections etc then inspect the vitals organs and glands for any odd lumps or discolouration. Although most Pigs in this area are healthy they still have the potential to have a number of diseases including Bovine TB. Cheers 👍

That's cool. I just developed a load for my .308 16.5" Mossberg MVP Patrol and it's going 2540 with a fairly high load of varget and shooting a 168 gr. Nosler Accubond LR. I got sub 1/2" groups with it and am doing some more break down groups. Very close to your velocities where you got the accuracy. 8) I'm at 44 gr. and going to do a break down from 44 to 45 in .1 gr increments to see if there are any tighter nodes. My initial tests were (5) 5-shot groups starting at 41 gr. Varget and working up to 45 gr. At 44 gr. was great accuracy and 45 opened up and starts getting pretty compressed. Using a CCI small rifle primer *-* starline match brass.
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting

Sounds like you’ve nailed it👍 Yes that is the sweet spot. Im using AR2208 . I found there is little to no point in pushing to 45.0 gr. I found very little increase in velocity for the extra powder. Iv settled at 44.5. At that point if the velocity spread is nice and low I’d forget doing the 0.1 powder increments and tune accuracy with seating depth. Usually there will be accuracy nodes for seating depth about 3-4 thousandths apart with nodes about the same length. Try to be at the longer cartridge length while still being in the node. That way you will stay in the node for a longer time as your barrel throat wears. Hope that makes sense. Good old 308s they seem to be a very predictable round even in different rifles. Good luck. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch 👍😁

@@controlledrecoil-nzhunting I actually have the load set out as far as AICS mags allow. I do that initially with all my loads for the most part! 10 ай бұрын
Hi, please note that this data is safe in this rifle not necessarily safe in others. Please treat this information with caution and start low working up in small increments, looking for pressure signs. Changing any components will change outcomes ( even primers). ADI powders have good reloading data on their website and I’d recommend going off that. Here is my data. 308 Winchester. 44.5 gn of AR2208 Sako brass and Winchester WLR primer. 168gr Hornady ELD-M Seated to just mag fit in the Tikka. 2.8” (CAOL) Velocity average is 2531 fps out of a 16” barrel with suppressor. ES was 9 fps. I use a two step sizing process, first with a Lee collet die for neck sizing, then a Redding body die for sizing and bumping the shoulder back 2 thousandths of an inch. Accuracy was great 4 shots all touching with 2 through the same hole. Hope this helps, any questions feel free to ask. Cheers.👍👍

Hi, it’s good practice just to check the general health of the animal. Wild animals are very resilient so if they look sick or have wounds or infections best to leave it. It’s not that common, however there are some diseases like TB and sarcoidosis in some areas. If the glands are inflamed that is a potential sign of an infection. Cooking meat thoroughly will kill TB bacteria. Sarcoidosis looks like rice grains in the meat. Often in the lungs. It isn’t common but is present in some parts of the sounds. If dogs are feed the meat they can spread it to different areas. I hope I’ve used correct spelling. Good luck hunting. Cheers.

Hi, yes it’s common with this equipment to view the projectile in flight. This is largely due to the amount of frames per second the camera is operating at ( 4K 60 ). The bullet is a bit slower out of this short barrel compared to other rifles but is still travelling at 2530 fps. The camera still captures the bullet even using other rifles, however no as easily. Good lighting certainly helps at times especially shooting into a sunny hillside. Thanks for watching 👍😁

What damage pigs cause? Same damage when you plant potatoes or salad
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting
9 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for watching. The damage pigs cause is extensive and often in sensitive native bush that doesn’t recover easily. There are places on this farm where the hillside is literally scarred from pig digging and is some cases erosion has started prematurely from it. They eat lambs sometimes in great numbers causing expensive losses along with crop damage in some areas. The rate they do all of this is always concerning and they breed very quickly also. Any country that has these animals introduced to their environment has the same problems. So no, its not the same as me planting potatoes. I do realise that the are just doing what pigs do, but as they are not native to NZ and the have no natural predators here, this is where the problem starts. I do think there can be a balance here if the numbers are controlled but from what I’ve experienced they almost need constant pressure to keep them even remotely under control. The benefit of course is we have a steady meat supply. I Appreciate you taking the time to watch. Stay safe 👍😁

@controlledrecoil-nzhunting

@controlledrecoil-nzhunting

@controlledrecoil-nzhunting

Great shooting. Good hunting. You have picked a great bullet. I also like Sierra hunting bullets. They are excellent performers as long as you use them within the intended velocities. That is always the case with bullets in terminal performance. Use per design intent.

Why does our man here choose such a short barrel? And does the silencer not negate the dimension and weight savings, or perhaps it’s over barrel?
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting

@controlledrecoil-nzhunting
10 ай бұрын

I do that initially with all my loads for the most part! awesome video mate, thanks for sharing!! I dare to ask, which powder and how much? I am working my way out for the Hornady 168 gr ELD match as well, would be nice to know your data on that...cheers
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting
Cheers.👍👍

Yes of course 👍 I hope it gives you an idea of potential performance. I have fired this exact load in a Bergara b14 with a 22” barrel. It still has great accuracy and was safe also. Velocity out of the 22” was 2720 fps.

@@controlledrecoil-nzhunting good to know : 22" it's closer to my Benelli Lupo, I've reach good accuracy with 168gn, 2208 ADI at 100 meters i have groups of 0.5 inches, wanted to use this as hunting load at 3-400 but I did not test it just yet and I don't have a chronograph so I can't be sure will have enough power and accuracy at that range, fingers crossed will test it soon! 🦌🦌

@@VitoLefemine Thats great to hear. That will be very effective to those ranges. I would use 2690-2700 fps as your starting point and test it then adjust velocity on your ballistic app as needed to match your exact drop. BC will also be a factor but will have little effect 400 yards or closer. If you are going to shoot further I would recommend finding a gunsmith with a chronograph. 👍👍

@controlledrecoil-nzhunting

Cheers.
Man, I can appreciate what a hard job it is to haul that meat out of the gully. It would have taken me a good while just to hike down to the carcasses after the kill.

Was able to follow the bullet into the hog?? Why. --- how fast is the bullet traveling or is it the camera????
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting
10 ай бұрын
Hi, yes it’s common with this equipment to view the projectile in flight. This is largely due to the amount of frames per second the camera is operating at ( 4K 60 ). The bullet is a bit slower out of this short barrel compared to other rifles but is still travelling at 2530 fps. The camera still captures the bullet even using other rifles, however no as easily. Good lighting certainly helps at times especially shooting into a sunny hillside. Thanks for watching 👍😁
What damage pigs cause? Same damage when you plant potatoes or salad
@controlledrecoil-nzhunting
