My kind of hog and coyote hunting here in the Texas panhandle. I don’t have a high $ scope and custom rifle but I take my share of these critters. My favorite ? rifle is my ar 5.56 with a 20” barrel and a Leupold 4x12x.50 LR. scope. Depending on where I’m set up because of the lay of the land it’s that rifle or a Savage 110 25/06 Leupold 6x16x50. It’s good easily to 600 yards. I just lov it. @controlledrecoil-nzhunting
11 ай бұрын
If you’re shooting larger animals inside 250 I would say go with the ELD-X , especially if your velocity is starting at the 2700-2750fps mark. If you’re shooting longer distances I would go with the ELD-M. Be aware they certainly do a lot of damage especially on light animals up close. For general hunting if 300 is your maximum range I’d go ELD-X but if you’re starting at lower velocity’s ( like a short barrel 308 , 2500-2600 fps) this balances the rapid expansion of the ELD-M and I would recommend the ELD-M. This will also allow reliable expansion at extended ranges with the lower velocity. If you’re bush hunting up very close I would go with a projectile that has some sort of controlled expansion or bonded core. If you do use a ELD-M up close , as you sometimes may encounter, try to avoid hitting bone to ensure the projectile reaches the vitals without breaking up first. They are certainly not designed for this. Note the 308 is forgiving as the velocity is not very high with heavy projectiles so an ELD-m will be suitable for a lot more. This however changes with magnum velocities as the issues described are exaggerated. As a rule of thumb, I generally find the “ heavy for calibre “ projectiles in the ELD-Ms work well as you have more projectile mass and less velocity. They are no good for hunting if you use the light and fast combo. AR2208 is a great all round powder in the 308. I’m getting 2531 fps from a 16” barrel and 2730 fps from a 22” barrel with the 168gr ELD-M in the 308. This is a hot load ( around Max in the book) but not pushing the limits too much as I have settled for accuracy rather than velocity. Please be careful working up loads in your rifle and use cation. I’d use the hornady or the ADI load data. Hope this helps. Cheers👍
