Sniper Elite: The Board Game is a hidden movement game based on the iconic video game series.
In the game, one player takes the role of the sniper, who is trying to make their way past the German guards by stealth or violence. Up to three other players control squads of German soldiers, striking a balance between defending their objectives and hunting the sniper.
Sniper Elite features a bag-manipulation element. The sniper draws chits from a bag to target the defenders, though canny defense can decrease the sniper's likelihood of making their shot...

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

    I would like to see you guys replay the game with the proper rules, I watched the play through and it felt wrong from my end. It seemed super tight. but more rounds I think would make the game more even. Makes the sniper able to "waste" more turns not pushing so hard towards objectives. Which makes him harder to figure out where he is.

    10 rounds is not enough against a good officers team. It's almost impossible to win as a sniper on most maps in just 10 rounds unless you get lucky with objectives. There's a harder mode with up to 14 rounds, but really, officers are quite powerful. Don't use it unless officer players are very clueless.

    I would definitely like to hear an update of your opinions after playing with the rules corrected...while it's true that the sniper would have more time, maybe your tactics would change knowing that they have some extra time to get the second objective, and thus make the extra time not that big a deal (for you Alex)....

    In regards to your error of playing only 10 rounds. At the end of the rule book there's a series of ways to balance the game (for example for newbies to be to play against more experienced players) by empowering the sniper or the officers, and one of these ways is to reduce the amount of rounds the sniper has to 7 (per objective). I feel like this was sort of a lazy way to make the game more balanced... but, is that actually bad? edit: just to add that I didn't feel the 10 rounds per player were too much on the games I played. So maybe you were just bad playing the officers? :p

    Alex, I would be curious if the additional rounds after completing an objective would be as negative to you if you were playing as the sniper and not the guards/officers? As the opposition, sure you don’t want the sniper to have extra time to be doubling back, but as the sniper that extra time becomes much more of a commodity.

    You guys know the timer resets back to 10 when you complete your first objective right? That takes care of your major complaint

    So I completely understand what you’re saying about the push your luck regarding the shot bag, but I would argue that it is thematic to the video game. For example, you could be super strategic and get yourself into a good position and you go to take a shot and you aren’t spot on and you miss the shot. So unless you are really good with the controller/mouse there is no guarantee you will make every shot

    I just preordered all in on their website. This game, with proper rules, looks awesome and has a theme some of my game group will love more so than Mind MGMT. I keep trying to get Mind MGMT out but they don’t like the theme or art much. Hoping this will connect with them.

    Good remarks about the flaws of hidden movement. If I ever played a game like this, I would probably grab a dungeon masters screen or something to hide my writing behind.

    In Submarine Pens the entrance in red at the bottom of the board is blocked, it is not possible to shoot or enter, this situation is not at all logical because the entrance is canceled, that is, it does not exist, there are only three entrances instead of four. The only solution is to allow shooting from the entrance or changing the objective to an adjacent space. This problem does not happen in Launch Facility. Please... Can you help me ? Thanks.

    So, this was Jesse's what, third or fourth, or fifth even, game that he's played of this? Wow... That's a lot of hours of his life he can't get back. No matter how much fun one may have while playing a game, for me personally, all that fun is erased if I later find out I was playing wrong. And thus, wasted hours. I'll have more fun losing a game that I played correctly over a game I won, but played incorrectly.

    @@BoardGameCo I dunno... I *wonder* if it might be a generational thing. In "the autumn of my life", I've observed that the younger generations are more accepting/forgiving of lesser standards across the board and not doing things "by the book", as much as what was expected in earlier generations. And to be fair, I know that generations which preceded mine would say the same thing about my own generation. And maybe it's because of my military background as well, and my OCD... but I simply don't have fun unless I know I'm doing it correctly. Sad as that may be, my brain is wired to do things the right way. And if I don't, then I don't allow myself that dopamine rush.

  • @seansteel328

    @seansteel328

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@bgm-1961 yes, but you can't retroactively undo the dopamine rush, that's not how dopamine works. I mean, I kind of get what you're saying. For example, say you went on a date and thought it went really well but the person never replied to you afterwards, it would sour your opinion of it and feel like you had wasted time with the wrong person that didn't get you any closer to finding the right person. I suppose that's the best analogy I can think of for what you're saying. For me, it depends on the game, there are some where I've enjoyed playing it and later found that we were playing a bit wrong and it would've maybe improved the experience, or maybe I would've even won. There's a minor frustration that perhaps I didn't get the full experience, but I can always play it again with the correct rules, or possibly your own "wrong" rules are actually better (for you) than those printed. House rules exist for a reason. Often when we're playing a new game I realise halfway through I've forgotten something or gotten it wrong (perhaps it's because you don't see the significance of certain minor/weird rules until you start playing and realise they clearly came from playtesting and they fix certain bugs; but we just say that "well, at least everyone's been playing by the same wrong rules, so 🤷🏻‍♂️", and it's only a game at the end of the day (also, these guys play games for a living, so for them playing a game dozens of times isn't that big of a deal compared to someone who maybe gets one or two games in a week, if lucky)

  • @bgm-1961

    @bgm-1961

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@seansteel328 I think we're on the same page... or at least are in the same book. You're absolutely correct that a dopamine rush can't be undone. But the memory of it can be soured. Having a fun time exists in two ways... during the moment, and in our memories. When they exist in both ways without any staining, then then in my mind, the fun experience is "full", and remains as such. But if the memory becomes stained (as in later realizing how the fun experience included an error), then the fun experience will forever be stained, and as such, suddenly becomes not "as" fun as it *should* be. You even hinted at this by mentioning the minor frustration you feel about not getting the full experience. That's pretty much what I'm talking about. Except with me, that sort of frustration is something I don't tolerate as well as I should since I aim to have a frustration-free life. :) (Ask me how THAT's going). Anway... Of course, there are varying degrees to how much the staining makes its mark, and to how much it actually matters. When it comes to playing a boardgame incorrectly, this whole matter is pretty low on the scale of things! So consider my original comments about Jesse not getting those hours of his life back to be more in jest than a serious worry.
