Sneaking into a ‘Vintage’ RC Car Race with a Modern 2wd Buggy!
Ойын-сауық
This is the NEW Tamiya BBX RC Buggy. It's pretty rare at the moment due to shortages. Even though it's a Modern RC Car, I snuck it into a Vintage RC buggy Race!

Great Tip about the setting of the slipper clutch!
"That's Gav coming behind me in his cougar" Cant believe he can race at the same time.....
No matter what place, it's still the best looking car in the field.

I was never a Tamiya fan. Been in the hobby almost 37 years, built my first Tamiya this year, a BBX. If they keep putting out cars like this, I’ll be a huge fan. I love that buggy.
Back in the 90’s We all used foams on carpet. With traction juice too!! Smelled like spearmint!
Aways great when Phil and Kev get together.

I really appreciate what you are doing here. I've been around (non competetive) RC cars and planes hobbies for a LONG time now... to me, a minium level of realism matters most, i.e. a proper driver figure and design compared to full size. A modern 'cab forward' buggy does absolutely nothing for me, it resembles nought in the real world, and dare I say it, the style is ugly. Just my opinion and I respect others too. But retro rules OK 🙂

Horses for courses my friend. Scale realism is awesome in a crawler or a show car. Hell last weekend at our club bash a guy brought out a 64 impala with working hydraulics and full leather interior. But I personally like speed and power. Even my tamiya tt02 is chopped up and modified to be fast. It hurt to chop the bumpers off a gt4 mustang body. Bottom line. Run what ya brung. If you're having fun you're doing it right. If you aren't having fun then you're the only person in the world who drives an RC car the "wrong way"

"A modern 'cab forward' buggy does absolutely nothing for me, *it resembles nought in the real world* " Someone's never heard of a prerunner buggy. Granted, cab-forward bodies still don't look _quite_ like real prerunner buggies, but then again "modern" cab-rearward bodies don't actually look that much like full-size sand rails or arena buggies either. I do agree with you on _some_ cab forward bodies, though. For me the body lines have to be right. Tekno's are as ugly as a buttock on a baboon, but the Losi 8ight 2.0's stock body had a more sweeping, half-teardrop shaped cab design that actually looks quite nice and fit in with the center-cab 1/8th scale buggies they ran alongside, rather than the chunky, angular designs we see today. Still, the whole reason for cab-forward has _NEVER_ been looks. High-bite tracks demand lots of downforce up front for better steering, and the positioning of the windshield actually makes a significant impact on that. If we were to see a switch back to looser track surfaces then maybe cab-rearward designs would make a comeback. I don't see that happening, though, because modern 1/10th scale racing drivers are obsessed with having THE BEST traction, they don't want to have to learn to race on loam or dusty hard pack.
Great tip on that slipper set up Phil 🙌🏻

I love that you guys have a vintage buggy class to participate in. I have done my fair share of tossing the vintage iron around a carpet off-road track. I have found that the Losi XX chassis is one of the best on carpet. If you can source one, I highly recommend it!
Heck yes. Tune and go again. Might even see about popping across to watch !

Great! Your Video reminded me that I still have an old Tamyia Car from somwhere in the eighties lying around - I drove it maybe only 5 times. As I am flying modell airplanes I nearly forgot about my old RC-car - but i will have a look at it! I just had a look at it, it is a "Sonic Fighter" from Tamyia. Lovely stuff mate. Will defo get one of those when they are more freely available. Just treated myself to a 2010 Holiday Buggy as its the very first car i saw as a kid that got me wanting Tamiya RC. Never owned one as i picked up the Sand Scorcher when i was 17. Another item off the bucket list and a nice little birthday gift. Keep em coming mate
CA glued the sidewall on the front tires to reduce traction roll. The further out from the bead you go the will help you reduce and tune the tracion roll issue out. Good Stuff! Good luck!
My 1987 Nikko dictator is still my favourite car to drive ..after adding grub screws to the 2 motors..I custom made 18650 2p4s battery's with original plug..replaced the bushings in the gboxes with bearings and filled the gboxes with cv joint grease and the diffs with nulon assembly grease with PTFE (20 year old tube U can't get now) and I installed a fan on the top with a grille positive pressure case and a custom cut oiled sponge between the fan and body shell ...the air vents out over the batterys ...I custom spun stiff stainless steel springs and with the motors being inside the wheel base the handling and grip is next level .this thing pre dates oil struts .
Need to get my kyosho beetle involved with carpet racing. Great video
I was never really interested in racing on a track. But racing vintage RCs with brushed electronics sounds interesting. I need to see if any track near me does vintag offroad racing.

Ah, the classic "You put me off" line.. Works every time.. 😂
I’m suprised by how well that went round a track. Looked fun to drive too. If you can sort out the grip roll I’m sure you’ll beat Gavin 😂
What camera did you use to record the first person pov on the vehicle.
Go again. Go big.
The one thing about not coming first is you can always get better. 😀
If you put a wing on the back and stiffen the front springs a bit it will jump without the nose dive👍 and the gear diff will help with understeer. TA06 steel gear diff fits.👍
That bbx is just incredible!! Really really want one. Also I feel a bromance coming on with you and Kevin. What you gna do when he leaves 😂
“THE TOMLEY VLOG!!”😂😂
You could add a little weight to the front chassis with either stick on weights or the factory ones. And turn your steering back to a lower number and add a touch of expo to make it softer on smaller inputs, but really yank it when you need it. Plus try toe in on the front, it wont shift weight so fast from side to side.. softer rears will help but a little stiffer front will keep the roll down.
Stiffer front springs and some steering expo (~30%)will help that buggy immensely.
You can run thicker oil. And lay the shocks out. To reduce chassis roll
Tomley what servo should I use on my tt02 that’s is in the USA for cheap
Gear up 2t, one single rate higher up front, and 10wt higher shock oil in the rear
I was waiting for this video since I saw you on rckicks video.

Need a gear diff too.... Do they make one for it?
Do they have a gear diff for this thing?
That trans looks like it’s the exact size and dimensions of a scx10 transmission. You should see if the gears fit in there.

Hello, I have the first version of the Kyosho Graupner kart 10 NR 4939. NIB for sale. I'm going to put it on the big auction house today. I'm curious what comes out.
I used to have an RC when I was growing up in the 90's. Back then Losi's were the best, Traxxas was OK and Tamiya's were low quality cheap RC's. I just started watching KZread videos on RC cars a few weeks ago and I'm surprised to see so many people with Tamiya's. TBH, they don't look much better than they used to. They have made some improvements over the years but it seems like there are still much better options from other companies.

Would the same slipper setup trick work for a 4wd system (slash 4wd) as well.

yes that's one of the simplest ways to set up a slipper, you can also delete it entirely with a spool and just ensure your always using appropriate gearing too, but that's your call.
What wheels did you use?
The thing reminds me of the Losi JRX-2. Front A arms rear trailing arms. Give me a gold tub RC10 with Stealth Transmission!
The skinny front tyres look so much better than the beefy ones from the stock setup. Never like the thick front tyres on the bbx. This is truly vintage looking now
Wish we had more tracks and closer id love to race

This one is just under 2hrs away from me. So not really local
cool as blank
It looks great, and it’s a scale looking buggy… but aerodynamically it’s at a disadvantage to the other cars in the field, the Race Buggy Style of the Cougar et al with Smooth lines and a big spoiler do wonders for performance… It would be ace to see it in a field of scale and frame buggys.
I think, I need this car in my collection, I never really paid any attention to it

@@TomleyRC it looks like the Tamiya 54471 Steel Gear Differential Unit Rear for the Ta06 is compatible. Do you think that’s a better upgrade than the slipper? Would you also need the slipper if you do the geared diff? I know you can play with thicker weight diff fluid with a gear diff.
How much is the slipper clutch in US dollars? I swear there was a justments in the front to change things with shims.

About $75 if you convert how much I paid
If I was running a track, I wouldn't really allow this in a true vintage class. Where I would allow it would be a "scale 2WD buggy" class, which would include some vintage models designed to look like full-size racing buggies but also more modern vehicles like the Losi XXX-SCB, ARRMA Raider, Integy i10Baja, ProLine Pro2 Buggy, Kyosho Ultima DB, etc. basically anything that looks like a real full-size RWD racing buggy or sand rail. Honestly, I feel like these types of vehicles didn't take off because they didn't perform to the standards of a modern 2WD buggy class at the time, but also couldn't run in vintage.
