This is what's known as a catch 22.....and very similar to an issue going on with performance cars like McLaren: they advertise that their vehicles are track monster hyper cars but void the warranty if you take it on the track. This also reminds me of a die grinder kit I bought from a local chain called Princess Auto. (kind of like harbour freight in the US). I got it home, wore out one of the stones, went back a week later to get another: we don't sell them. I looked around and no one sold that size because the shaft was an oddball size. I went home, got the grinder, went back to the store: I'd like to return this. Them: opening up the kit, you've used it and worn out one of the stones, we can't resell this. Me: ok, sell me a replacement stone then. Them: we don't sell them Me: NO one sells them Them: well we can't return this as it's used Me: (pulling a karen) Get me the store manager Manager: we can't return this, it's used Me: Sell me another stone Manager: we don't sell them Me: NO one sells them Manager: and? Me: you sold me a power tool that is single use and disposable. Did you advertise this on the box? Manager: It's not single use, you can use it over and over Me: only until you wear out the stone. I want to exchange it for one that you DO sell replacement stones for. They eventually exchanged it for me and I noticed a month later they no longer sold that model.

Great video, and you are absolutely right to call them out on this. 70mph should be easily achievable just by adding the recommended pinion if the car is sold as being able to do '70mph+', it shouldn't be something you did as a one off in almost laboratory conditions and with damage to the car. Unfortunately looks like 70mph would be unachievable for most - looks like we should be asking Traxxas to show their video of it doing this and for them to repeat it over and over to back up their claim. Traxxas, time to put your big boy pants on and show us all how its done ....

People have gotten to the speed range, but not without entirely gutting the drivetrain. It must have been the weight saving, running the car upside down scraping all those bits off, that gave you those few extra mph?!! 😉 Seriously, all these claims from what appears to be the vast majority of manufacturers is taking the micky out of all us customers!! And what Traxxas said for this is just astounding!! Words failed me with their reply to the first email is just nuts!! 🤷🏻‍♂️ Imagine Marty McFly trying to get to 88mph, only to have a note on the dash, to say that you've got to buy the MrFusion unit, which they don't make, and you've got to go to the future to buy, but you can't, because you can't get to 88mph......!! 😆

The rating is a bit silly tho because you have to be an extremely good driver to attain the speed. If they would just change the number to something like 55+ mph or something more useable lol.

Same ordeal I experienced with my Traxxas XO-1. Tires are definitely the problematic area for what use to be the fastest RC box stock. But you need to have belted tires such as GRP's or Foam tires to easily achieved advertised 💯+mph. And that's no weight either. I have researched it and no one can provide proof of stock 💯+mph. I'm sure it's capable for I got 96mph my first run but the tires balloon like crazy after it. Glue did not separate from rim I think the belt broke inside the tire and now they balloon. Well I glad to see you show the proof. The audacity to say we don't advertised 70+mph stock. Thanks for 🙏🏾 sharing. And I named my XO-1 the Ex because that's exactly what it is.

We need more of these videos. I recently purchased a Traxxas Raptor R since it advertises reliability and durability. ESC fried in the 2nd use. Hobbyshop was awesome and replaced it. The 2nd NEW ESC failed 2 days later. The button got stuck on and I could not operate. Hobbyshop replaced again, and I finally got one that worked! 2 weeks later, the drivetrain failed. The motor needs to be rebuilt, and the spur gear is destroyed. The best part about all this? It failed on my Birthday, trying to play with my dog at a dog park, with throttle limited (Don't need much speed playing with a Corgi). I got this truck to play with my dog at parks to replace my rustler since the wheels do not extend out (fear of paws getting mangled up). Apparently it is extremely durable to bash, but is not built to play with a Corgi. Zipping across an empty grass field and parking lot with limited throttle is literally all of its use. My Rustlers steering servo had to be replaced after a month. My TRX4 crawler motor burned out right away as well. The level of quality control is abysmal, especially for the price. Looking back, I really wish I spent my $2k worth of toys to Axial/Arma over Traxxas......Why advertise durability?????

A lot companies have been using the '+' on their advertised speeds for as long as I can remember. It's a misleading practice for sure but definitely not a Traxxas-only thing. I think it's otherwise going to be the same case with the XO-1 where it 'can' do the claimed 100+mph in the real world, but will require risky runs and very ideal conditions to achieve that. Will be interesting to see the supposed stability improvements on the new version coming into effect for smoother 100mph runs.

I did an excel document years ago where I put in charging and discharge data for several batteries to try and see what is actually going on rather than listening to the grapevine. A few batteries did deliver what advertised as to C rating but all lipo suffered from increased internal resistance with abuse of charging or discharge to hard.

That is totally fair enough for you to call them out in their claims. To claim their products meets a very specific performance number with an optional part that they don't sell or manufacture. Also I bet if you chewed the spur gear they would probably claim its because you didn't use the stock pinion. Also yes I'd agree that Traxxas make some good products and the 2WD traxxas platform is especially good although I really dislike the company from an ethical standpoint. Also as for RC bashers and crashers I left that group a while ago, unfortunately there are too many a-holes on there who ruin it for everyone else and I decided my life would be better without it. Congrats on getting 70mph although in order to do it you needed an aftermaket part which traxxas do not offer so it's still false advertising on Traxxas' part.

I am a Traxxas fan. Compared to the RC toys we had back in the 80's, even the lowest cost Slash is a super durable blast to play with. Plus easy to fix and parts are everywhere and reasonably priced, though getting more expensive post-pandemic. We bought 4 of them to race in the back yard with the kids, friends and family and it has been a lot of fun to be a kid again. That said, the big pinion for this thing was readily available and the car did do 70 with the suggested pinion, so it was a stretch but not a false claim. I bet with some complete OCD level attention to the gearbox, bearings, alignment and setup, you could have seen 71, satisfying the "+" on the box. ;)
