THANK YOU! I found mites in my collection 3 days before this video posted. It was meant to be. Really a refresher with some added information because it was your last video on mites that finally helped me get rid of them last time when nothing else worked.

That is awesome to hear. I have a few more videos, but my hope is that this video with a higher production quality touches on some of the other elements that I missed in some of the previous videos, also reorganizing the information into a more simple fashion.

I think the most important takeaway here is to never stop thinking about mites and their path to your collection. Thanks for the reminder.

Mites have to be the greatest fear of reptile keepers.

You have to break the life cycle of the parasite. They eggs hatch apparently 2-3 days after being laid. The eggs are laid every 4-8 days. Fleas are easier to get rid of, than mites. (And before someone assumes, I'm not talking about treating snakes for fleas. I'm talking about getting rid of them from your home.) They have a 2 week life cycle. You treat, then repeat in 2 weeks. Bad infestations need to treat every two weeks, for 2-4 treatments.

How often do you soak a snake in dawn dish soap with an active mite problem? Every 2-3 days for 1 hour?

I had the exact experience you were talking about where you find a mite but it's not a reptile mite. Turned out to most likely be a soil mite from my bioactive substrate and I never saw another one after that.

I just worry about the hot shot because it says not to use in places where people are there more than 4 hours a day. We live alongside our animals so its probably not an option.

Yes, it’s not great if you are living in the same room or spending a lot of time in the same room. The reptile spray is super effective and I have found it to be the best stuff on the market. Granted, I haven’t had mites in years, it’s definitely something I struggle with at times over 30 years of keeping.

I think that only applies to small confined spaces without good air circulation/ventilation. I have some snakes in my living room and put a hotshot out a couple of months ago. Me, my fur babies, and scale babies are all fine.

I'm not sure why you say they don't live in the wild in North Carolina because we have a subtropical climate here and yes they do lol I myself have rehabbed black rat snakes that were collected covered in mites. I also had a situation where I dug up some ground cover plants and foolishly put it in one of the enclosures to see how it would look without first washing it off and that tank ended up with mites. They may not have originated here, but they're here now. But yeah, almost all of the time, it comes from the damn reptile expo lol
