Cathy Mitchell “In ’89, the FCC released the half-hour infomercial format where you could buy a half an hour of time. Everyone was kind of scrambling,” she said. “I think Ron Popeil probably did the first one, but I was one of the first three. The guy who owned the Snackmaster said, ‘Hey, these TV commercial things are kind of interesting, why don’t we try one?’ We went down to a little studio in San Diego, rented it for five hours. By today’s standards it was like, hey, let’s put on a show in the garage. No food stylist, no makeup lady. You know, I had to borrow a lipstick from the secretary in the outside office’s purse. But funny story, because afterward, the guy who owned the company said, ‘You know, we never talked about paying you. I’ll give you a thousand dollars for your time here today or I’ll give you fifty cents for every machine we sell. But bear in mind we might not sell any.’ So I took the 50 cents and we sold a million machines.”
@60gregma

And in 1992, Clark National Inc. went out of business. So even selling a million machines couldn't keep the company afloat. Dave Clark either made so much he could retire, or lost his butt.

Cathy Mitchell is the Bob Ross of Infomorcials.
I love watching this, takes me back to simpler times when kitchens were hideous, moms smelled of hairspray, and food was incredibly bland.
Believe this or not Cathy Mitchell, since she's done informercials from the Clarke SnackMaster to Dump Cakes is worth over $20M. Say what you want, she's not a dumb woman!

i heard her give an interview a year ago where she said that after they were done shooting the commercial, the guy told her that they hadn't yet discussed payment for her services. She said that he offered her $1,000 for her time, or 50 cents per machine sold. She took the 50 cents, and she said that one million of these machines were sold!

She's good at selling garbage products that you don't need but think you want at 2am. That machine toasts okay, definitely need the butter to get a better toasting. The eggs cook meh and the bread pie isn't good. Those were 50 cents at good will
We've been using a Snakmasters on a regular basis for the past 30 years, that 50$ paid itself a long time ago.

If it has Peppers in it, it is sudenly Mexican or Spanish. Mexican omelette, Spanish omelette, Mexican mini pizza...

I think they were better built and lasted longer. More heavy duty than what you would buy today.
The only thing I had some success with was the pancakes with sausage in them. They were very thick not like pancakes. More like big hot donuts but they were good. The pizza was horrible, the quesadilla was crispy and brown and therefore horrible. Tuna puffs - never tried and don't want to. Apple pie- same.

The problem was the babysitting. We were very busy back then apparently, and would either shut the stove off earlier or forget to come back to the stove quick enough. They'd be undercooked and liquidy, or overcooked and rubbery 😂 and that's why a lot of 90s kids (like me) truly despise fried eggs now 😂
