    Yeah she was supposed to meake them to fight with each other and thus make them easier to catch but anyway that was the smurfette's purpose... That was gross episode... In the end smurfs accepted smurfette as one of them and papa smurf used his magic to turn her into "real smurf" (gargamel made her look more like male smurf at first with black hair and big nose) And when the transformation was complete smurfette turned into hot-sexy-heel wearing babe we know today. And no, i'm not exaggerating, male smurfs react on that transformation clearly making us know they find her HOT... Sheesh... really kids today deserve to get better origin story for smurfette and i'm glad they propably got it with this movie.

    Oh. Maybe different countries have different origin for her, in mine he used some kind of "magic plasticine" to make her. Made a mix in cauldron and also added: quote: "Some sugar and some spices, but only the gross ones, little bit of crocodile tears (in my country crocodile tears mean "dishonest/manipulative), half a dozen of lies, a bit of magpie shriek and the hardest stone instead of heart"... So yeah... Quite an origin story, eh?

    I'll give this movie some encouragement. It's the best piece of Smurfs media I've seen to date, and though I missed Boss Baby, I'd rank it above LEGO Batman in terms of personal enjoyment. I appreciated the performances of the voice actors, as all of them came across as the characters they were playing rather than as their actors doing a voice. One of the pitfalls that the Smurfs historically falls into, particularly the live-action movie, is having too many characters involved in the story at once, making many of them unnecessary. This movie not only had a smaller main cast than normal, but each member was able to go beyond their standard one-note personality trait and feel like a more fleshed out individual. They got all of their one-note Smurf character gags out in the beginning and end of the movie, then picked a handful of characters to focus on and poured nearly all of the characterization into them. I also have to genuinely emphasize that this portrayal of Gargamel may have been his most competent iteration I've ever seen, in a way that didn't remove his generally comedic tone. The lack of character development is one of the movie's biggest shortcomings, and it's unfortunate that I find it to be an issue intrinsic to the Smurfs property. The Smurfs is so dependent on the status quo of its characters that growth simply isn't possible. Brainy must remain brainy, Clumsy must remain clumsy, Grouchy must remain grouchy, Gargamel must remain evil, etc. Fortunately, even in the area of character development, we still got more than your typical Smurfs property would be willing to provide. Clumsy gained a greater sense of confidence, Brainy and Brawny strengthened their friendship, and if anyone exhibited significant character change in a potential sequel it would be Smurfette. One thing I can really appreciate about this movie is how it really seems like the creators listened to the onslaught of complaints pulled in from the live-action movies and did their best to avoid them. The overuse of the term 'smurf' as a euphemism was annoying, so they toned it way down; the setting in modern day America and focus on real humans wasn't enjoyable, so they had it follow the classic Smurfs formula; the CGI smurfs looked kind of creepy, so they made the movie animated; the gross-out humor didn't fit the property, so they cut it out. They didn't even sing the Smurfs song and cheekily joke about how awful it is. They just didn't sing it, because they knew people didn't want it. That kind of subtle breaking of the formula is such a minor touch, but it goes so far in carving out this movie's identity as a Smurfs movie. I don't believe this movie broke any new ground as a movie, but as a Smurfs movie, I think was a major experiment into the unknown, even before getting into the girl Smurfs. It's a shame to me that it only turned out 'okay' by public opinion since it means we may not get another opportunity to see them refine the good, remove the bad, and improve what we get even further. Also, one last point: I'm in love with this movie's art and animation style, and I think it may be the most visually appealing movie I've seen from this studio, even more than the Hotel Transylvania movies.

    I agree that the celebrity actors were not needed, actually I would say they are rarely needed. There are so many amazing talented voice actors out there who could have done so much more with these characters. Not that these celebrities aren't talented, but voice actors are far from "run of the mill" The original series was full of legends like Frank Welker, Don Messick, and Paul Winchell, not to mention the amazing Lucille Bliss the original voice of Smurfette. Who knows what might have happened if they used actual voice actors. Frank Welker is still one of the most versatile and amazing voice actors, add names like Rob Paulsen, Jim Cummings, Dee Bradley Baker, Tress MacNeille, Tara Strong, Mark Hamill (yeah Luke himself is an amazing voice actor, BTAS Jokeer!) and Sean "Sam-Wise" Astin. Hmm....wonder who they'd voice?

    RD felt slightly more imaginative and a little less recycled, but....The order of the movies so far this year is sort of a wash - all of them would be way towards the bottom if they were on last years list. I wouldn't want to watch any of them a second time #feelsbadman

  • @jdxawe

    @jdxawe

    7 жыл бұрын

    Lewtoons I can understand thinking that for the other three, but LEGO Batman? I agree, it's not as good as The LEGO Movie. It's not as imaginative or heartfelt or even well detailed, meaning things like the water not being made of LEGOs and such. But, in my opinion, it was equally funny and rewatchable. I just can't imagine someone not liking that movie, but I guess some people don't have the sense of humor you would have to have to really love that movie. I guess I'm just defending because I love The LEGO Movie so much and I don't want to see it's spinoff be any worse, but it's your opinion and I respect that you give your honest opinion, even if you would get hate for it. So, pretty much, I don't agree with your opinion, but I respect it highly.

  • @CamsEyeView

    @CamsEyeView

    yeah his hate for the LEGO Batman film is kind of unwarranted. It comes off like its the worst thing ever when films like The Boss Baby are more cynically produced. Hell, The Boss Baby should be lower since it's pretty much one joke with no heart and soul beyond that one joke. The joke can be funny and sometimes it really works, but at the same time, LEGO Batman had way more passion put into it.

    The Smurfs has been a huge part of my childhood. Not just because of the 1980's animated series but also the original comic books by the Belgian comic artist Peyo on which the animated series is based on. Since I live in the Netherlands (Where the Smurfs are way better known then perhaps in the US) I got more exposure to franchise. This is also why I went to see Smurfs: The Lost Village and I thought it did the comics and the animated series justice. Even if you're not much of a fan of the 1980's animated series, I'd suggest you'd check out the original comics if you can find them in English. Perhaps then you'd have a better understanding of the new movie.

    I really enjoyed this movie! I hadn't seen any trailers going in, and was not expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the idea of exploring "what is an -ette" was cute, relevant, and super important for kids. The characters were much less one-dimensional than they usually are, the animation was great, and the gimmicks were tolerable.

    Smurfs was a Belgian comic book first and there are some stories in it that are very good. This is usually when Peyo the artist was critiquing human society through the Smurfs. Like "The King Smurf" which was basically a story about how dictators legally rise to power. I doubt we'll ever see that level of satire in an American family film about the Smurfs, though. They're too remembered over here as this harmless '80s cartoon.

    what's more, smurfette is an outsider among the smurfs in several ways: not only is she the ONLY girl (well apart from the child girl but that's...just as confusing) but she isn't even a real smurf, she was created by gargamel to help him catch the smurfs but turned on him and now lives with the smurfs for real. thinking about her backstory and how it affects her personally is actually an interesting idea...which I doubt this movie did as well as it could've

    Why do studios on using big names for voice-acting? Since most animated films are assumed to be produced and marketed for kids, big names aren't going to make any impact to them. Professional voice-acting is a different bag to on-screen acting and there are many voice actors who would be more than happy to take on such projects and get a nice wage out of it. Since voice actors do more than one voice, they can take on multiple roles in a film which means a studio doesn't need as many people in their cast which means they wouldn't need to spend as much. Course, I don't know marketing or own a studio so what do I know?

    Hello Chad, there is a movie coming out in 2017 that not many people have heard about that I think you really should review. It's called The Breadwinner and it is released under the company Cartoon Saloon with other collaborative studios. As you seemed disinterested in the movies coming out this year, I hope this movie will change that. However I have no idea if it will be amazing or bomb. I just know that Cartoon Saloon has put out two Oscar nominated movies including one of my favorites, Song of the Sea. I don't know when the movie comes out, but like you did with the little prince, if you could review it but not include it in the voting at the end (that is if it isn't released in theaters) that would be awesome. Thanks!

    The comics were targeted more to kids than adults, but they're still fun to read. It's better than the show, in my opinion. There is a more obscure animated film about the smurfs, from 1975. www.imdb.com/title/tt0074539/ I don't know if it's better or worse than the Sony animation film, because I haven't seen the latter.

    Smurfs The Lost Village is honestly the Ratchet & Clank Movie for 2017 honestly because just like that movie it isn't frustrating but it isn't something that is good either so this movie in my opinion is average and Rock Dog is The Wild Life for 2017 aswell for me

    I never saw the movies, but I read the comics and saw the 80's show. The show could've done better at capturing the absurd humour of the comics, but it was pretty entertaining. This movie, form description and indeed the bit where they barely, if ever, use the word "smurf" to replace something - that's terrible. I get it from a "we need the kids to understand it" perspective, but it's such a huge part of the Smurfs and in some cross-over comics they have some great running gags with it. As for Smurfette being the only female Smurf, that never changes in the comics as far as I'm aware. At some point the Baby Smurf does appear, and Smurfette takes it upon herself to take care of the baby Smurf (because let's be honest, who else could? There's no "Care-Taker Smurf". Also sexism probably). Only in a later comic is it revealed that "once in a Blue Moon" a new Smurf is born. A "Blue Moon" happens when in a single month there are two full moons, but in the comics of course the moon turns blue and I believe a stork brings the Baby Smurf to Smurfette's doorstep, or just the town center... I don't quite remember the details. I sometimes wonder if it might be a bit "too European" for American audiences to enjoy. Maybe the humour is too absurd? Like a Smurf running in circles around a hole chanting "37, 37, 37..." for another to get curiuos and look in the hole, then the running Smurf pushes him in and starts chanting "38! 38!" - always cracks me up :P Maybe it's just a dated concept with the Single-Trait Smurfs that only works for short gags but not entire storylines? The comics also tackle some more adult themes like say Hitler in one comic, and the idea of currency and communism in another. There was also this entire storyline of the "northern smurfs" and the "southern smurfs", as to replace which word with "smurf" as a cultural identity thing. (For instance, soup spoon becomes "soup smurf" or "smurf spoon".) TL;DR: The comics were better, but maybe "too European" for adaptation.

    The idea from the original cartoon is that Smurfette was created by Gargamel to sabotage Smurf village but there was also a little girl Smurf I forget her name she had red hair. So this movie isn't that original and the original idea is even better I think.

  • @ShadowDrakken

    So, the plot of this movie makes no sense because it was sort of already answered in the original series as to why Smurfette is the only female Smurf... Gargamel created her to lure the Smurfs into a trap. She's not a real Smurf, or wasn't initially. Of course, that's only true of the animated series, not the comics that the animation was based on. The comics had several females.
