In the actual Bible, Joseph not only thinks that he's being cheated on, but he resolves to divorce her quietly before the angel tells him not to.

So Kawaii I do know that Mary and Joseph were together, but Jesus was born when the couple wasn't married
I'm a little surprised that you never noticed the idea of Joseph's skepticism. That's actually mentioned in the Bible. He was going to divorce Mary in the most discrete way that he could, but he was approached by an angel in a dream who told him that the child growing in Mary was from God.
i have zero interest in actually watching this movie, but props to them for not whitewashing everything. I cannot count the amount of times I was shown a blonde-haired, blue eyed Mary growing up.

William Henning For real. I grew up seeing brown (usually wavy) haired Mary. I can't say much about the eyes though, but I am aware of the fact that the color blue is symbolic of something related to Mary's character as a person, that's why she's usually portrayed *wearing* blue.

seaearthponies Mary was often theorized to be Joseph's second wife due to the fact that he was middle aged when they were betrothed. So while they made Mary look accurately 13, Joseph was too young looking to be considered true to the canonical story.

i know right, brown people in the middle east, who would have thought.
You never thought about Joesph thinking Mary had slept with other people? In the Bible it takes an angel coming down and vindicating Mary's story for him to believe she was still a virgin and agree to marry her.

Got to be honest, my biggest concerns about the movie were 1) first big-name animated movie to tackle a religious story since Prince of Egypt, so any fuck ups will be noticeable, and 2) it's following the fucking Emoji Movie, so there's that. Probably won't see it, but good to know it wasn't the dumpster fire I was expecting it to be.
Have you seen The Price of Egypt? It’s really good.
I'm catholic and I'm not offended by the movie. I haven't watched it but I can understand they're not being accurate. It's just to be cute and entertaining for Christian kids.

In the bible, that was actually Joseph's reaction to finding out that Mary was pregnant. He planned to call off the marriage believing her to have cheated on him, but received a message from an angel in a dream reaffirming that she was carrying the son of God and telling him that she told the truth. He believed it then and stayed with her.
I can't get into the movie at all, mainly because the main donkey character (whatever his name is) falls just enough into the Uncanny Valley. Is anyone else feeling that too? He just looks... off...

MrJechgo Nice poem mate!
If I wanted to introduce a kid to The Nativity, I think I would pass on this. I'd rather show them The Little Drummer Boy or Nestor The Long Earred Christmas Donkey, or even The Small One. They're stories that don't focus entirely on The Nativity, but it still plays a big part in each story. The Star feels more like a cash grab than a genuinely charming Christmas movie.
All I can say is thank God (quite literally) this movie is flopping. It really sucks unfortunately. I’ll rather watch Veggietales again. Also Coco is a winner!
Nice to hear a more fair review. People seem to just trash it simply because it's religious. You admit it's not perfect, but not omitting its better qualities. As a Christian myself, I'm still on the fence. Generally from what I hear, it's more for kids which is fine. The last animated Christian film that got a theatrical release was Veggietales. I do hope this movie does well because I would like to see more made at better quality.

Haven't seen it said yet so... Mary's conception is the immaculate conception, not Jesus'. Common error though.

I am a Christian and I'm not at all offended by the movie I see it as a way to educate children of the birth of Jesus while keeping their attention Looking at the ads for the movie I thought it would be bland but I thought The Star was really funny (which says something since I don't normally laugh much at cartoons) and would recommend it even to people who aren't Christian

Hmm. I’m Jewish....maybe I could check this movie out instead of the New Testament!
So, is this just a high-budget version of Donkey Ollie? (Not that I've watched that, just seen the Say Goodnight Kevin Reviews of it)
You know, if I were Joseph, I’d probably be confused and doubtful too. I’m surprised though that Joseph didn’t do what most people during that time would do when they suspected a woman of cheating on her husband.
Manger = food trough. The story is that the manager served as his crib, not that he was born in one. Twice you use the word manger when you seem to mean stable. Mary did not crawl into the manager to give birth.
The virgin thing is actually brought up in the Bible Joseph was going to send Mary to live with her aunt before an angel told him not to
I remember when I was little we had a photo where we dressed as Christian characters, I was Marry. And my “boyfriend” was Joseph lol
I wonder if tumblr artists would pervert a bible story...🤔
The Immaculate Conception is NOT the Virgin Birth. It's a concept in Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy that Mary was born without sin. While most Protestants believe in the Virgin Birth, they generally don't attribute any more importance to Mary than they might to, say, Abraham or John the Baptist, certainly don't believe she was sinless, and don't believe in the Immaculate Conception. Just thought I'd clear that up. Also, the New Testament made clear Joseph's skepticism over the circumstances surrounding Jesus' conception (Matthew 1:19).
Joseph kind of adopted Mary though... He was quite old actually...
This is probably the closest I’ve ever seen to a GOOD review of this movie. It would be nice to finally get that for once.
I’m not even very religious, but my absolute favorite religious animations are Dreamwork’s “The Prince of Egypt” and Disney’s Christmas short “Small One”. 💕
I recall seeing a musical play at SeaWorld around Christmas time with a similar story. Barn animals telling the story of Jesus' birth from their perspective and arguing who was the most important in the story. I actually liked both the play and this movie
My mom wanted to see this movie, and she's a devout Christian. She doesn't mind the whole animal idea. She thinks it's kind of cute, actually.
Omg we had that old nativity vhs. Growing up, I always thought of it as the the second rate scooby doo.
Great insights!
I still prefer the Simpsons version tbh.
I'm curious, would you include movies with the Rodger Rabbit Effect in your "Every Animated Movie" reviews?
The idea of this movie makes me think of "The Little Christmas Burrow", though this one seems to follow Mary and Joseph a lot more.
I think the "inaccuracies" should be handled similar to how parents handled Veggie Tales, it opened the conversation. Giant slushies were not thrown from the real wall of Jerhico, but no one cared, it was brought to attention and delt with fun and sillyness while still teaching the real story. It's a great way to get little one's attentions
I'm just here to find out why Leo Valdez is in the thumbnail
The Small One, directed by Don Bluth, also focused on the donkey. Okay, the focus was more on the donkey's previous owner. But it's a good short.
I have seen the Hanna-Barbera cartoon you were showing clips before but it has been awhile and I didn't know Vincent Price was in it.
this isn't the first time the nativity story has been told with talking animals, as long as it's nothing outright offensive I'm sure it's pretty much harmless
I know it's not technically a theater movie, but can you PLEASE do a review on the new "Hey Arnold! The jungle movie"? I'd really love to know your thoughts on it!(if you've watched the cartoon series, of course)
The only thing I did not like was the bad comedy. I saw it in an empty theater though its made $22million.
is the star already out in theater's?
Will you be doing the animated movie awards show this year?
So..it's pretty much 'Nestor the Long Earred Christmas Donkey'?

He is right about the movie being frustrating to Christians. It just kind of distracts from the whole point of Christmas. I think it could have been better as a film unrelated to the birth of Jesus

Mr. Eponymous. But then it wouldn't even be about Christmas. Since you know, the actual reason Christmas was celebrated, and how this movie goes back to the origin. I dont find this frustrating at all. I was actually pleasantly surprised.

Lavar Ball That's a good point. I was trying to make a point without having yet seen the movie. I wasn't sure how the movie portrayed the story, and since Lewtoons said he would rather see the characters have their own movie, I defined it as that
theyre doing a new version of ferdinand the bull who liked to sit under the tree and smell flowers? i liked the wb version. didnt read the book.
Well, Joseph did have second thoughts about marrying Mary until Gabriel visited him too.
I would like to see an animated film about the book of Revelation despite it being a really really hard story to interpret in movie from. That and also being really dark.

Hi Lew ♡
I thought at first watching this movie was weird then it got good. The ending was the best part of the movie. People who say the dove was twerking in the movie they are wrong he was just being silly shaking his butt.
wait... does this mean skellingbones is going to make you watch 'donkey ollie' now?
I loved this movie a really great movie cute and very done one of the best animated films of the year i did not find it unforgettable.
Hey Lewtoons, are you going to review Nickelodeon's Hey Arnold Jungle Movie? I feel like it at least deserves attention...it's certainly not a good sign for the other animated IPs Nick wants to revive (badly produced overall)
I work at a movie theater and this is the only movie not doing that well right now, but cynical atheist I'm kinda happy about that

Will you be reviewing The Breadwinner??
i dont know why people call these "stories" as just that... stories. tbh i wouldn't trust any big company to make a movie about any accounts in the bible.
Apostolic here, so I can't speak for Christians, but I think the concept-- that being the perspective of the donkey-- is pretty cute. I imagine a lot of Christians will be pretty down for this movie too. I wouldn't even consider this sacrilegious in any way, and at least Mary and Joseph aren't portrayed as white this time around, like at least the depictions are accurate. I don't think God would be too angry at this movie-- He has to have a sense of humor... otherwise I don't think I would even exist.

Jay The nativity as told by animals (specifically donkeys) has happened before. I remember watching a really badly done stop motion animated film about a little donkey with long ears that becomes Mary's donkey, and I remember a Don Bluth short film that was *about* (rather than from the perspective of) the donkey. I believe it was called "Small One". So yeah, basically this has been done before, its nothing new to explore
@Jay-lh2fs

I'm not saying it's original, h eck, i'm fairly certain one of my old churches did (or at least planned to do) a play based off of one of those. I'm just saying it's a cute way to portray it. If i'm honest the most original rendition of this was probably the veggie tales one... unless there's a nativity story set in space I don't know about...
So what you're telling me is... This is basically Donkey Ollie but better?
I'm looking at your list, and I feel it must be revisioned. Here, I'll do it for you. (Looking at them all objectively with 0 bias) 1. Coco 2. Lego Batman Movie 3. Cars 3 4. Lego Ninjago Movie 5. Captain Underpants 6. MLP Movie 7. Smurfs The Lost Village 8. The Boss Baby 9. Despicable Me 3 10. The Star 11. Rock Dog 12. The Emoji Movie (Some can be interchangeable)
The nativity is a lovely piece of fiction.
The footage from the older animated Nativity story was made by Hanna-Barbera. Not bootleg at all.
It looks cute. I wanna see it
It doesn’t have to be accurate to enjoy it, epically as a Christian
