Hey! Interesting thing about Muntz not appearing as old as he should be, early on in the film's development, the idea was that Kevin's eggs had a "fountain of Youth" property that Muntz used to stay young. If you happen to have/ get "the Art of Up" book, you can see some really cool development art of an ancient- looking Muntz. I'm actually not sure why this was cut out of the film, such a cool idea!

To be honest, I'm falling into the category that this theory is just one of those "(X) has fantastical elements, so therefore one of the characters must be imagining it somehow/all or one of the characters are dead." It can apply to literally any form of fictional media, meaning it has no grounds whatsoever. They just change the wording to fit whatever story more, even though they always say the same things. The character's old? He must have died. The character's young? Must be imagining it Obviously that's not always the rule (See Eds in Purgatory theory), but that's usually what happens.

Robert Poole i agree. i think theories like this are lazy and are the equivalent of “and then they woke up!” endings to stories. it takes the magic out of media, i think.

normally I agree - but there seem to be so many overt nudges from the filmmmakers in this one, that it's hard to think it's not intended once you dig in. ' Ed Edd n Eddy purgatory theory' IMO is much more of a grasp.

Yeah, I will say that this is closer than normal, but it's still too much to agree with. Even though there are themes of accepting loss, those can be present whether or not Carl is dead. And, the only other thing that seems like possible proof (apart from the usual "This couldn't happen in real life!" stuff) is Charles Muntz (is that how you even spell his name) being about the same age as Carl, even though I'm 90% sure that's just a cop-out so they can still use him as a villain character.

Please debunk the stupid "Tarzan is Anna and Elsa's brother!" theory. So many people are accepting it as fact just because some guy who worked on the film made a joke. That one makes zero sense.

The theory makes no sense. For one thing, Frozen takes place in the early to mid 1800's, Tarzan take place in the early 1900's. Also, their parents look totally different. Also, how do you leave Norway for a short trip to Rapunzel's, and end up shipwrecked in South Africa? I'm interested in seeing Chad's view on this too.

Somtimes taking a joke too seriously is just fun. If you want to see a theory based KZreadr who gets angry at this particular theory try "Thefangirl" most of her stuff is well put together but she can be a little biased on a few topics. A good example would be that she hates using Disney sequels when seeking out evidence for things.

he actually dies when the storm hits and he "gets knocked out" because then on he is as active as he was in his 20's but earlier he couldn't go down the stairs.

One of the main reasons that this theory has never help up all that well for me besides the ending is Kevin. Just Kevin as a whole. If Carl is dead, Russel's the guardian angel and Muntz and his dogs represent his biggest idols and dreams, what is Kevin supposed to represent? Kevin is an incredibly important part of the story but with the afterlife theory he just doesn't fit at all. If he doesn't represent anything the whole theory basically falls apart.

i think that was part of his trial of giving things up. also learning to be selfless and help others, even strange creatures. and its not completely out of the blue, remember when he watched the Muntz film, there was a skeleton of the bird.

What do you mean? Im looking up right now and the only video theorizing that is this one.... How could you be sick of it? this is literally the only video in the world saying that theory...

I usually don't like "the character was dead the whole time" theories, but this one is super interesting. Up is one of my favourite Pixar films too, and now I can't wait to watch it again through this lens. This is a really cool idea for a series and I can't wait to see the other videos you make for it!

Carl's real life sucks and filled with misfortune In his imagine trip to afterlife, every action became just so smooth, fly house works, travel to dream destination in almost no time, meet rare bird, meet dream idol and he lives just as what Carl wish to be. They call it near death happiness. feeling joy to let go is what one's brain's last job

Muntz is Carl's personal purgatory. Defeating him makes him free and he can go on.

It was very evident from the ending titles that this adventure is kid's exaggerated imaginary interpretation of spending time with the old guy

3 years late to this party but this was an amazing video! I hadn't really heard this theory until I saw the vid thumbnail popping up in my recommendations recently and I think next time I watch UP I'm going to think about it as the after life transition. As if that movie wasn't already super emotional TvT

I do believe Carl is dead throughout the whole movie. Up really is similar to Ghost, or my favorite movie, Beetlejuice. Sometimes the dead can't part with their worldly possessions, so they can't move on.

10:44 you are pretty correct to put it in to support the theory but it could still be his psychology changing for the better and actually having a motivation

i'm a huge fan of fan theories so this series will be so interesting to watch!

The fact that he actually died from the beginning and the story is him going to heaven is actually tru based on google.

i have another goof, and that is... some people become gray, early on, Carl might as well be in his 60s with health problems, but with spending some time in the fresh air, the jungle nature, his health goes up again

Apparently Charles is 23 at the start of the film which makes no sense, he looks at least 27, and Carl is 9, there is a 69 year time jump to Charles is 92 and Carl is 78.

I saw another theory that says that the Charles Munst in the movie is dead and that is just a fan pretending to be him. But if this is "well..." how could that be true?

I just look at these films at face value and believe that everything that happened on screen actually happened

What if the Boy Scout is also Dead and he was actually a childhood friend of Carl? I mean he became bitter after his wife’s death maybe his subconscious depression Baugh back a childhood memory in the form of this dorky little boy.

I think the story probably is more about loss than it is about ghosts, and that the Carl being dead thing is more a byproduct of the loss part, but it does present that part of the story as something a bit more tangible if you chose to see it that way. Anyway, fun series! Can't wait for more.

I just watched this movie for the first time this weekend and I cried like a big baby. My daughter was like mom 🙄 are you okay ? 🥺 lol . I loved it !!!!

Can anyone remind me the name of that ghost movie where the dude tries to kill some of the people he hates and you get to see what happens when he tries but it's all in his imagination and you see the person chilling just fine? I saw parts of it years ago and I still have the scenes I remember burned in my mind. One where he goes out into traffic to learn that cars just pass through him, one where he picks up a shotgun but it shows back up where it was before he touched it and one insane scene where he shoves a woman off a roof swing and she falls to her death, but it turns out she's totally fine. I know this is a vague description but i'm curious if anyone remembers this.

my theory is that carl just had low confidence after ellie's death and didn't think he could do it so he employed a cane and the monorail chair thing to transit the stairs
