Smoking Causes Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema

www.nucleushealth.com/ - This 3D medical animation created by Nucleus Medical Media shows the health risks of smoking tobacco.
ID#: ANH12071
Transcript:
Every time you smoke a cigarette, toxic gases pass into your lungs, then into your bloodstream, where they spread to every organ in your body. A cigarette is made using the tobacco leaf, which contains nicotine and a variety of other compounds. As the tobacco and compounds burn, they release thousands of dangerous chemicals, including over forty known to cause cancer. Cigarette smoke contains the poisonous gases carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide, as well as trace amounts of cancer-causing radioactive particles. All forms of tobacco are dangerous, including cigars, pipes, and smokeless tobacco, such as chewing tobacco and snuff.
Nicotine is an addictive chemical in tobacco. Smoking causes death. People who smoke typically die at an earlier age than non-smokers. In fact, 1 of every 5 deaths in the United States is linked to cigarette smoking.
If you smoke, your risk for major health problems increases dramatically, including: heart disease, heart attack, stroke, lung cancer, and death from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Smoking causes cardiovascular disease.
When nicotine flows through your adrenal glands, it stimulates the release of epinephrine, a hormone that raises your blood pressure. In addition, nicotine and carbon monoxide can damage the lining of the inner walls in your arteries. Fatty deposits, called plaque, can build up at these injury sites and become large enough to narrow the arteries and severely reduce blood flow, resulting in a condition called atherosclerosis. In coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis narrows the arteries that supply the heart, which reduces the supply of oxygen to your heart muscle, increasing your risk for a heart attack. Smoking also raises your risk for blood clots because it causes platelets in your blood to clump together. Smoking increases your risk for peripheral vascular disease, in which atherosclerotic plaques block the large arteries in your arms and legs. Smoking can also cause an abdominal aortic aneurysm, which is a swelling or weakening of your aorta where it runs through your abdomen.
Smoking damages two main parts of your lungs: your airways, also called bronchial tubes, and small air sacs called alveoli. Cigarette smoke irritates the lining of your bronchial tubes, causing them to swell and make mucus. Cigarette smoke also slows the movement of your cilia, causing some of the smoke and mucus to stay in your lungs. While you are sleeping, some of the cilia recover and start pushing more pollutants and mucus out of your lungs. When you wake up, your body attempts to expel this material by coughing repeatedly, a condition known as smoker's cough. Over time, chronic bronchitis develops as your cilia stop working, your airways become clogged with scars and mucus, and breathing becomes difficult.
Your lungs are now more vulnerable to further disease. Cigarette smoke also damages your alveoli, making it harder for oxygen and carbon dioxide to exchange with your blood. Over time, so little oxygen can reach your blood that you may develop emphysema, a condition in which you must gasp for every breath and wear an oxygen tube under your nose in order to breathe.
Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are collectively called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. COPD is a gradual loss of the ability to breathe for which there is no cure.
Cigarette smoke contains at least 40 cancer-causing substances, called carcinogens, including cyanide, formaldehyde, benzene, and ammonia. In your body, healthy cells grow, make new cells, then die. Genetic material inside each cell, called DNA, directs this process. If you smoke, toxic chemicals can damage the DNA in your healthy cells. As a result, your damaged cells create new unhealthy cells, which grow out of control and may spread to other parts of your body. Cigarettes can cause cancer in other parts of your body, such as: in the blood and bone marrow, mouth, larynx, throat, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, uterus, and cervix.
Smoking can cause infertility in both men and women. If a woman is pregnant and smokes during pregnancy, she exposes her baby to the cigarette's poisonous chemicals, causing a greater risk of: low birth weight, miscarriage, preterm delivery, stillbirth, infant death, and sudden infant death syndrome. Smoking is also dangerous if a mother is breastfeeding. Nicotine passes to the baby through breast milk, and can cause restlessness, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, interrupted sleep, or diarrhea.
Other health effects of smoking include: low bone density and increased risk for hip fracture among women; gum disease, often leading to tooth loss and surgery; immune system dysfunction and delayed wound healing; and sexual impotence in men.

I’m only 19, and I have been smoking for 6 years. I’m a hard smoker for 2-3 years. I’m afraid to take a look at my lungs. Today I decided to quit smoking, because I started to feel heaviness into my lungs, that something isn’t right. Wish me luck! 😊

Pixel it didn’t go well 😢 I ended up smoking again, but now I’ve swapped to a vape for over a months now. Slowly decreasing the nicotine, now I’m at 3% nicotine, and eventually I’ll go down to 0% and then hopefully be able to lose the vape.

S Mac it’s a process, you’ll get there. Try meditation, this helps relax you and reduces cravings. Chewing gum (not too much because it has a laxative effect) is good for the hand to mouth feeling, similar to eating mints or m&ms. Good luck

My brother,(right now at 22 years old) Has been smoking for a bit.He has started smoking because he grew up in a environment which smoked a lot.Not much then 3-4 months ago,he started coughing up blood and had trouble breathing. He went to the doctor where the found out that his lungs where operating at the age of a 80 year old. He still smokes now,but less still,I hope he never gets sick or dies.He is a great brother and friend.I hope everyday that he quits,I never want him to die. If you are still reading this thank you for reading this and I hope that if you are smoking you may stop, after know what happened to my brother and some other people who commented,if you are smoking, please stop. Even if it feels good it’s doing just as bad as good. This is not even anything to joke about, because what it can do.Have a good day and if you are smoking stop.

while I totally agree with you, there are problems with this that I see. the tobacco industry is huge and rich af. They will pay off government officials to not make it illegal. another thing is that cigarettes are not the only offender here, cigars, hookah, dip, and snuff all have the same effects.

If I dont smoke for a while, it makes me very angry and aggressive. I've knocked it down from a pack a day to just a couple of cigarettes per day. But yeah, quitting is hard. We're aware of the dangers, and just because we smoke, it doesn't mean we want to. I feel disgusting, I know I'm probably gonna die early, I have to drag myself away from work or family to cater to my addiction, there are many places that make my situation very inconvenient, and people think I'm terrible and inconsiderate (LOOK AT THE COMMENTS).

I used to smoke but I quit on New Year's Eve in 2015. One night in late 2017 I was over a friend's house who happened to be a smoker and just out of curiosity and to see if I still liked it I lit one up and took a puff. EEEEEWWWW!!! Never again! Not only didn't I enjoy it but it felt like someone was strangling me when the smoke went down my throat. Seriously! I felt like there was a scalpel in my throat. How the hell did I ever do that on a daily basis all those years?!?!?! It was so gross. Glad I took that one puff a year later because it made me realize that I don't want it or need it. Best thing I ever did was stop smoking!!!!

Then I got a headache. Needless to say, Idk why people do it. Also, it's not like a hugely addictive thing. Addiction is a mindset, in my opinion. After that first one, I actually did want to try it again, but then I said to myself "If I try it again, it'll become a habit". So I simply said no. Don't let anything or anyone control your habits. I just wanted to experiment, and I'm old enough, and experienced enough, to know my limitations and capabilities.

Exactly one year after I was born, I am 44 years old. He has stage 2 COPD. Doctors said if he quit today, he'll add another 8 to 10 years to his life. Obviously you should make an appointment with your doctor, but cigarette smoke will damage and irritate your lungs over time. If you've only been smoking for 9 months, as long as you stay away from smoke you should notice your lungs slowly feeling better as they heal over the course of a few weeks/months.

I smoke alot because my Bill's are up I lost the woman of my world i drive wreckless in my truck and emotionally exhausted I help the best I can. I'll die helping this video is not stopping me from smoking because I'm a nobody I'm not even suppose to be here. And I don't give a shit about anything anymore. I'm heartbroken. I know when in dead I won't have to deal with problems bigger then my depression dI'd I mention I got a head blown gasket no job. And my only comfort is my truck. My family see me as the fuck up that is trying. Life is so unfair and my heart is too broken to speak I'll leave with a slam door I'm fucked to the core.

I used to take grandma to chemo all the time since my parents worked during the day, I used to go out and get lunch across the street and I could see the staff from the infusion room outside smoking during their break, not very smart people.

Lol what’s the point of old people doing chemo? It’s just torture pretty much. Should have just let her live out the rest of her days in peace. That’s what my grandparents did. They ended up living longer then they were told due to not having the shitty chemo and shit that would have caused them to die quicker.
