Save some money and trouble and boil em, trust me. Well I guess unless you have one of those fancy smokers were you just press a button, then it might be easier than boiling but it's not gonna make them taste any better. If you boil them you get all that flavorful juice up inside.

I know this is weird but I asked Chatser AI about basting the crab shells. Here is it’s answer: “As an AI language model, I do not have personal experience with cooking, but as per my knowledge, the basting of butter and lemon juice can penetrate the shells of snow crabs to some extent, but the degree of penetration may vary depending on the thickness and hardness of the shell. However, most of the flavor and moisture will be absorbed by the meat inside the shell. It is essential to baste the crab frequently while cooking to enhance the flavor and ensure even cooking.”!

@@ryanbarefoot7194Boiling is entirely different from smoking. Hardly any of that butter is being absorbed this way. If anything, it’s being transferred from the shell to your fingers and then to the meat. Better to just put the butter in a cup and dip the meat straight into it.

If you don't the smoker will dry out your crab legs and the meat will dry inside, the fat keeps the shell hydrated and heat the shell to steam the meat inside. Might as well add some flavor while at it instead of plain oil. Cracking the shell is a horrible idea, all the steam will escape and your crab meat will be dry asf.

Make half that amount and use it to dip the crab meat into after. There will be 0 difference in flavor. No matter who tells you different.
