Smiths Everest Expedition PRS-25W Review - Simply Superb Field Watch | WATCH CHRONICLER

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In today's video, I would like to review the remarkable Smiths Everest Expedition PRS-25W which recreates the watch worn by the remarkable explorer Sir Edmund Hillary. In my estimation, it is the best value field watch currently on the market.

    Thanks Armand ... this video inspired me to buy this Smith’s and I really do love it. Perfect size, super/simply functional and well finished. I have it on the bracelet which, aside from the oversized clasp (in my opinion), wears very comfortably on wrist. Thank you for the review... this one will be happily worn for a long time!!

    This looks pretty much the same as an old Tourist (that's the brand ; )) I had from the early 60's but sold it. Even the red seconds hand, the same! I need one of these, the looks of my old, now gone watch but new with all the benefits. Great review!

    Sir Hillary himself wrote a letter stating that he did not wear a Rolex during the summit. Rolex in response at the time published a statement acknowledging that he wore only a Smith's and in a classy move congratulated Smith's. Sadly the story has become twisted and Rolex have lost their class.

    Alyn Lewis I’m familiar with the Smiths...If you’re talking about the one that looks like an explorer...I don’t think it would… Seiko makes a bracelet That fits all of the Saabs from the now discontinued line…but it’s kind of Expensive… Strap code makes 3 that are specially made(End links) For the 017 And I think it’s the same one for all of the Saabs of the last generation...And oyster bracelet, A Jubilee, And an Angus Jubilee...I have the Angus Jubilee And I like it although it’s a bit bulky for my alpinist and if I had it to do over I would probably go with the regular Jubilee. Oyster $60, Jubilee $70, Angus Jubilee $100.

    Thank-you for this post. A Smiths watch will be my next purchase. Unfortunately my income has taken a shellacking, so £330 (which equates to a little north of $700AUD when duties, taxes & shipping are included) will probably take me close to 6 months to squirrel away. I have an 8 1/4" wrist and happily wear a 38mm timepiece, I find that 40mm is perfect for me, so it is the 40mm 1016 'Homage' that I'm thinking of. Although this piece is preferable to me - its thermally blued hands, and 'original' Smiths design are appealing and offer greater value, both monetary and aesthetically - 36mm is a problem, especially when I am unable to have the piece on my wrist pre purchase. I think I will have to take the safer route - the 40mm PRS-25. Thank-you again. The post made me (yet again) lament my solid 6' 4" frame which gave such pride...before I became a watch collector with a taste for vintage items!

    I have several Precista and Smiths watches from Eddie and have not had any issues in dealing with him. Always pleasant enough whenever I have emailed. I understand that Timefactors has been trying to grow and in the early days it was just himself and his wife who operated with small batches going out the door. The watches I purchased arrived the next day in some cases (I am UK based so maybe mileage varies with overseas shipping). Perhaps there is some growing pains with expanding the business and he has just recently recovered from an illness. Also, I agree with you Armand on the Miyota 90xx based movements. I have adjusted some of them to be virtually chromometer levels of accuracy. Just now I am getting -3 to +2 in various positions on my timegrapher and on wrist it has only gained one second after 4 days of wear. When I saw this Everest I was seriously tempted but already have too many watches in my collection to justify. Although at the price it is still very tempting. Nice review Armand. Will check out the website.

    How’s Armand’s doing? Also, if there's one character that I would like to see wear this field watch, it would be Stan Marsh from South Park. Also, this is the older version as there is some change to the new one, those being: - Increased anti-magnetic figure - a different caseback engraving - the Smiths crown logo on the screw down crown One more thing, the new version is refer to as the Smiths Everest Expedition PRS-25EXP Also, i nicknamed this Smiths watch the “Stan Marsh” on the ground that 1. Stan Marsh is my favorite South Park character and this watch's color scheme of the hands on the dial feels like it fits Stan's attire, and 2. this watch would be the GADA watch of Stan Marsh if he buy the watch when the Timefactors online store is open which is easier said than done due to limited opening hour (also some of the story about needing seconds and a big amount of luck to buy a Timefactors watch seems to be exaggerated, if you are there when the online store is open and if you have the money, you can buy the watch), but once he get the watch, he will have it alongside him for everything. Even when he is 25 years old, when he wore this Smiths with a leather strap that's included while wearing a really dashing wedding suit in black, exchanging vows and marrying his longtime girlfriend and fiancée: Wendy Testaburger (Wendy Testaburger's watch when she is wearing her stunning ballgown-style wedding dress in white, exchanging vows with Stan Marsh, her longtime boyfriend and fiancé and marrying him is her GADA watch: the Smiths Military PRS-29A, nicknamed by me as the "Wendy Testaburger", also known as the Smiths W10 reissue. (The semi-matte black dial of the Smiths Military contrast nicely with the white color of Wendy Testaburger’s stunning ballgown-style wedding dress, while the pale cream dial of the Smiths Everest Expedition contrast nicely with the black color of Stan Marsh’s dashing wedding suit)). (Yeah, i am a sucker for the Stendy pairing) Also, when will Armand return? I know he is taking a sabbatical, but when will he return? It's been 10 months since his "Top 5 Most Influential Chronograph Watches" video was uploaded and he haven't upload any new video since. My first time encountering the Watch Chronicler channel is when i stumble upon the video on some of the best quartz watches in the industry. For those who hadn't watch that video i'll link it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZZ5rxbWlfdaZm8o.html So Armand if you are reading this comment, tell me how long your sabbatical is so that i will know when you are returning. (Stan Marsh's two other watches: the Smiths NATO PRS-40 Chronograph with the tri-compax (three subdial) layout (Stan Marsh's everyday watch) and the Smiths Caribbean 1000 PRS-55 in blue (Stan Marsh's tool dive watch (deepsea dive watch))) (Wendy Testaburger's two other watches: the CWC GS Sapphire Stainless Steel (Wendy Testaburger's everyday watch) and the Marathon MSAR Quartz in black (Wendy Testaburger's tool dive watch (military issued dive watch))) Note: even after Stan Marsh and Wendy Testaburger's wedding, they still wear wedding attire once every month for fun, like that scene from Friends, more specifically a scene from Episode 20 of Season 4 where Rachel Karen Greene (no joke, that's her middle name), Monica E. Geller and Phoebe Buffay-Hannigan is sitting on the couch while wearing their wedding dress (also Rachel's wedding dress in that episode is simliar to the wedding dress she wear in the first episode of Friends, also Season 1 Episode 1 Rachel in her wedding dress still look gorgeous although that big veil dedeuct some of the beauty of the dress, but Season 4 Episode 20 Rachel is infinitely more beautiful in that simliar wedding dress, Rachel probably look better in that dress because she doesn't have that aforementioned big veil and because of her iconic haircut) (here's the link to the moment in question: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZnqHrdxpXcSTobQ.html) (it's called the Rachel haircut, here's a link to the Wikipedia page on that hairstyle: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rachel)

  • @trongnghiachu1977

    @trongnghiachu1977

    Жыл бұрын

    (Note: the Rachel haircut has been criticized by several people because of the difficulty to maintain and Jennifer Aniston (the actress who play the role of Rachel Karen Greene) has publicly stated that she dislike the hairstyle for the same reason but add that the hairstyle hard to replicate as well. It's like any Roselia song in BanG Dream! Girls Band Party! on any difficulty (not as much as a nightmare unlike the New York Circuit from Forza Motorsport 2, or trying to control the Ferrari 330 P4 or the Ford GT40 in the Legends World Trophy event, also from Forza Motorsport 2, or the Long Beach Circuit also known as "the Monaco of America" In Real Life from Forza Motorsport 5 and Forza Motorsport 6, with the latter game having the very first racing series of the very first part of the campaign forcing you into doing a 24 car race despite the fact that Long Beach Circuit is one of the narrowest track featured in the Forza Motorsport series). Songs on Expert difficulty from both Love Live! School Idol Festival and Love Live! School idol Festival ALL STARS (not as much pain in the ass like the Test Track Infield King Cobra from Forza Motorsport 2, or an invitational race late into the career mode with a 700 horsepower limit around the Test Track Infield King Cobra also from Forza Motorsport 2, or any R1 class events from Forza Motorsport 3, especially on the highest difficulty and M. Rossi always drives the best car in Forza Motorsport 3, the Peugeot 908, also from Forza Motorsport 3 is the The Solid Gold achievement, getting that achievement will took you a lot of time, because getting gold in all racing events in Forza Motorsport 3 is a very long and gruelling process). Forza Horizon's Insanity level AI or Forza Motorsport 6's Unbeatable level AI, the same Unbeatable level AI also appear in Forza Motorsport 7, but, in Forza Motorsport 7, the game makes it clear that the AI is getting some really illegal assistance. Both of which are a pain in the ass to beat. Then there are the race tracks themselves and events themself: The aforementioned full "King Cobra" variation of Forza Motorsport 2's Test Track, which is already annoying to begin with, but this variant is even worse because it includes impossibly tight hairpins turns and 90 degree bends and it includes enough of the aforementioned tight hairpins turns and 90 degree bends to make a player pine for a NASCAR oval track. One race late in Forza Motorsport 2's career mode is an invitational race with a horsepower limit of 700, and getting cars with that much horsepower around the King Cobra track is a colossal pain in the ass for even the most experienced racing sim fans, especially since the shortage of straightaways and the emphasis on extremely tight turns means you're spending a lot of time pushing a car capable of reaching speeds of more than 200+ mph or 322+ kmh around the track at roughly 60 mph or 97 kmh. Also from Forza Motorsport 2 is the aforementioned Legends World Trophy, the most infuriating event of the game. It pits two Le Mans race car from 1967, the Ferrari 330 P4 and Ford GT40, against each other, with half the grid in Ferraris and half in Fords. These cars run on narrow cross-ply tires that don't provide nearly enough grip to cope with the cars' 500-horsepower engines. Even with stability control and traction control enabled, the GT40 and 330 P4 fishtail wildly when you bury the accelerator even in the straights. Most players would immediately think about giving those car some racing slicks, which would turn it into a pussycat, but here's the thing, in this race (which is unlike all the other Professional Series) you are not allowed to modify the cars in any way. It's like one huge Craig Tucker (a character from South Park who has a habit of randomly raising his middle finger) to everyone who plays with a controller instead of a steering wheel. And that's just the cars themself, each of the race is excruciatingly long as well, lasting up to 20 minutes and there are six of them. You cannot go to another race without forfeiting the championship so you have to play them all in a row. In comparison, the R1 championship (the ultimate event in FM2, with modern Le Mans cars with 800 horsepower, an absolutely enormous purse, and steep level grinding requirements for entry) is a breeze. Also, the aforementioned New York Circuit from Forza Motorsport 2 is a nightmare to drive on thanks to it's long straightaways and extremely sharp turns and things get much worse in Forza Motorsport 3 as the "New Circuit" version add tire wall in a zig-zagging pattern which can catch those coming from Forza Motorsport 2 off-guard. Hell, it catches the computer racers off guard. Set the difficulty to easy, and watch at least one car run head on into a tire barrier without fail, which is funny as hell... unless they get in your way and make you wreck (i.e crash). You'll be glad for the game's rewind button. And then there's the aforementioned Long Beach Circuit from Forza Motorsport 5. There's a good reason why it is considered to be the "Monaco of America" in real life; it is one of the narrowest tracks ever featured in the Forza Motorsport series, combine it with 16 cars on the track and you'll get a supply of nightmare fuel in the form of endless crashes in the first three corners of the track. Oh and it has returned in Forza Motorsport 6, i dare you to do a 24 car race here. Or i would if the game wasn't made of spite, since the very first racing series of the very first part of the campaign does exactly that. The one set of Nürburgring tracks from Project Gotham Racing 4, which is snowy all the time, unless you are in a custom race where you can change the weather, add in the fact that you can't always rely on watching the walls to know when a turn is coming (there can be loads of space between the track and the railing sometimes) and it's like the town of South Park (really really fucked up) and then there is Nürburgring's the Behemoth track, which is the Nurburgring's Formula One circuit combined with the longer and much harder Nordschleife route and it is really long, also from Project Gotham Racing 4 is Tokyo's Crazy Turns, The Las Vegas Boulevard Tour and the Macau Hairpin. The first track has near-impossible corner at every possible area, the second one might be the longest racetrack in the game other than the Nürburgring's the Behemoth track, although it's awesome to look at, the third track has really sharp corners, that and being an incredibly long track, it easily ranks with the Nürburgring's the Behemoth track as being one of the hardest racetrack in PGR4 (link to a video of someone beating their personal best lap time in an SSC Ultimate Aero TT: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZyfz8WAo7HeYZc.html) (speaking of that SSC Ultimate Aero TT, here's another link to a gameplay of PGR4 in that car: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqmZl6qRqJXNe9Y.html). F-Zero GX's Chapter 7 from the Story Mode on any difficulty thank to those two cheating bastard that is Black Shadow and Blood Falcon or Phantom Road: Slim-Line Slits at the end of the Diamond Cup, that being the hardest cup in F-Zero GX. Trying to drive the Group B rally cars in Dirt Rally 2.0. The Mystic Peaks track from Need For Speed II, that track is so hard (especially on Simulation mode where execllent driving skill is needed) that 1. the McLaren F1 don't have enough handling for this track and 2. you may neet to resort to cars with really good handling like the Ford Indigo or the FZR 2000 so as to not have an epic fail and then there's Darius's Canyon Race from Need For Speed Carbon because of the car he is driving: the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car, it has the insane handling of Tuners cars, blistering quick acceleration of Muscle cars and high top speed of a Exotic car without the drawback of those three types. To deal with Darius, you can use one of three cars like the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (C6) or the Dodge Viper SRT-10 (ZB I) or the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX, those three cars can beat Darius in a Canyon Race if you give it the performance upgrade and tune it properly (particularly the Corvette and the Viper, both of those have decent handling for a Muscle car and acceleration that is so god-tier it'll put Darius's Audi to shame, although, there is a difference between both, the Viper has slightly better acceleration but the cost is that it slightly lesser handling while the opposite happen with the Corvette: slightly slower acceleration, but on the flip side, it has better handling), if you tune it properly, you will hand Darius his ass on a silver platter. Here's a link to a NFSC video about the aforementioned Dodge Viper SRT-10: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJqG1syGZK_ensY.html . Marinus Antonius I agree. Total nightmare. It looks as if you have to constantly monitor the website, then once every so often the guy opens the website for orders for an undisclosed amount of time. 2 hours or so by the look of it. Then when he’s got enough orders he shuts the orders down for a couple of weeks. Seems like a lot of effort to buy a watch. Very amateur.

    The 9-series movement, the case shape and finishing, the size and the screw down crown. All great stuff! I would probably get it if I was looking for a new watch. I wouldn't actually wear it on an alpine/summit-hike though ;) I'm all quartz in such activities after I messed up a (supposedly rugged) automatic movement while back-country skiing a few years ago. It couldn't handle the shocks + cold, and the accuracy went absolutely haywire/erratic.

    I was interested in buying the 36mm Everest model from Smiths but it seems near impossible to buy one. Who else makes a 36mm mechanical Explorer/Field type watch with a black dial? 36mm is important so bigger or smaller will not work (i.e., the 38mm Hamilton Khaki is too large).

  • @jsytac

    This new-Smiths watch is a nod to the old-Smiths A454 - a watch from the same family of watches as the A404 - the actual watch believed to have been worn by Hillary at the top of Everest. Both the A404 and A454 were old-Smiths 'Everest' family watches. The only difference being the change form a sub-dial to a centre-second hand. The A404 was the 'Everest' and the A454 was the 'Everest family watch upgraded for the Antarctic Expedition', hence when why new-Smiths have called it the 'Everest Expedition'. There is a new-Smiths 'Everest', which is a tribute to the original conquest of Everest but in the Rolex Explorer design.
