Smile Secrets of the Top One Percent

HOW SOME PEOPLE APPROACH THEIR DENTAL HEALTH. It’s always impressive how some patients approach their dental care. As opposed to the average patient, these dental overachievers are obsessively proactive about their oral health, even as they get older. Often they are more affluent and have the resources to be more proactive in their care, but anyone can improve their dental health by following their strategies, with or without dental insurance. Here are some of the methods these patients use. First, they have goals that they base on data. These patients start with comprehensive exams to find out where they are, what issues or problems they might have and what their options are. This could include not only x-rays or a cone beam CT, but a periodontal exam that records all numerical pocket depths, a check for oral cancer and TMJ issues as well as an exam of the teeth. Together, we create a treatment plan to achieve their goals. Second, they make sure they have access to what they need to meet their goals. This means they make use of the best plaque removal devices and routinely use antiplaque rinses. Like patients being treated for gum disease, they have checkups and cleanings every three months. Patients often ask about oral DNA testing, which helps to determine the exact types of bacteria in the mouth and if you are genetically susceptible to tooth decay or periodontal disease. They use a team approach with the right dental specialists. These patients see specialists who are experts in their problem areas. This could include periodontists, endodontists, orthodontists or oral and maxillofacial surgeons. In this way, small problems don't become severe issues. These patients take advantage of the latest treatments. They are interested in the connection between diet and their teeth. They ask about the link between green tea and new bone formation. They're interested in mercury free dentistry using tooth colored fillings and ozone therapy as a way to maintain a healthier mouth. They want to know about links between dental/periodontal health and heart disease and cancer. They find out if bone morphogenic protein is a way to get more bone for dental implants. Dental overachievers ensure that they manage their goals. They don't believe that getting older means they need to accept tooth problems. They don't accept misaligned teeth, bone loss or missing even one tooth. They're always asking, what else can I do? Obviously every idea won't be for everyone and insurance isn't going to cover all of this, but it gives you an idea of what is possible. You can have great dental health at any age.
