This film is actually a sequel to a short film called "Laura Hasn't Slept" that explores the backstory of the student who passes the curse on at the beginning of the movie, with Caitlin Stasey reprising her role as Laura in this movie.

I'm a former filmstudent from Sweden and I love this movie. My teachers were adament in putting emphasis on quality over quantity. The tone, acting and sound are my three favorite aspects of this project. Sure, story blah blah blah, but when it comes to a rather simple but affective idea like this one, persuasive acting is even more relevant. Even the realistic lighting brings this home for me. Tjough I wish the ending would be more palpable, due to the very strong former scenes. Impressed is a word I'd use to describe this, even though it wasn't fully up to par at the end. Plus I'm a scaredy cat, so there's that.

I really feel bad for Jackson. That incident must've left the poor kid scarred. If they were to make a sequel for this movie, which is set at a time that's years after Rose's death, wherein the smile entity still continues to terrorize it's victims, I'm pretty sure the focus would be on Jackson(now grown up), who would be the newest victim, for he had experienced trauma before.

She’s right, the sister is horrible. Obviously her and rose are pretty close and know each other pretty well. So the way rose is acting should really worry her sister and make her believe something might seriously be wrong. Instead, her sister just dismisses her as a crazy person and offers absolutely no help. Oh, yea… the boyfriend (a-train) is pretty shitty too.

I mean they were somewhat close. They attended parties together, went to dinner together. She’s a respected medical doctor. She’s likely never acted the way she’s acting. It’s obvious something’s going on. How do ya just dismiss her and offer no help?

@@andrewreiber7691 Then you didn't understand the sister's perspective, according to her , her mother had a mental problem an she committed su**side and it is mentioned that from childhood the main lead had a trauma as shown in the start of the movie the main lead still getting nightmares,and the main lead watched an another su**side in front of her in the hospital, so the sister thaught the trauma was triggered again , and the sister knew that she haven't recovered from her mother's death and the main lead still goes to another therapist, So tell me one thing if someone comes and tell you that is cursed by a evil spirits do you believe the that person, no you won't that's what happened here , as a normal person the sister never witnessed that evil spirit or she never heard about that evil spirit so how should believe that sister is cursed.

39:14 I honestly think they're unable to look away because the entity hook them in. Rose saw her patient starting to cut her face, so she could've looked away before she died but didn't. The lady at the gas station knew what was gonna happen but was unable to look away, same with Joel. The thing needs trauma to be passed on, so I think it doesn't want its victims to look away.

This was hilarious and I know it’s sadistic to wish that these two react to more horror movies. 😅

What made a lot of the jump scares work in this movie was that a lot of them came from things that were visually unpleasant to look at. So if the sound and suddenness didn't make you jump the sight of it most likely would.

Let's be fair, this movie is intense and I saw alot of horror movies.

This was great, you both were fun, you should watch “Barbarian” and “It follows” barbarian is a bit more fun , you’d enjoy. Smile 2 is filming now and picks up where this left, Joel getting it and follows him. Sure we’ll see Rose as the demon because she’s still showing in the casting. Stoked. Watch for more marketing at sports events etc but sure they’ll change that up,..maybe at a concert or music awards or something? The writer said theres a hypnotic effect the demon has which is why rose didn’t sprint to the girl with the glass or say stop, Joel didn’t move or say a thing when he would have charged at rose to stop her. They couldn’t have it be in rose’ head becasue it wouldn’t leave it open for a #2.

I would say Joel had a brief 2-3 second window to try to tackle Rose if it could have registered fast enough that that was gasoline Rose was pouring on herself. Now the only question I'm not sure of is how strong is the smile demon while inhabiting someone else's body?

I agree with you two. This was the scariest movie I have seen this year.

9:38 omg you guys HAVE to watch Insidious 1 and 2 and The Strangers now😂😂😂 Movies like Insidious and Smile strategically place the jump-scares in service of the story more so than shock value. These movies have mastered the art of fear, discomfort, disturbing scenery/imagery and the composers have made some beautiful eerie music. Additionally, the story, acting and camera work are spectacular. Smile is the first new age horror movie that has managed to make me uncomfortable going to sleep😂😂. When I watch horror movies, I want a great story, great acting, eerie music, camera work and emotional stakes or characters and story that resonate with me emotionally

This movie scared the hell out of me in the theaters and I thought all the acting was really well done. this is the director's first full length film so props to him on that one and all the actors here their smiles are 100 percent their own creepy smile no cgi involved at all because that is how the director wanted it and there will be a Smile 2 just don't know when or what the plot will be. The jump scare of her mother yelling her name by the computer got my heart punding for a while even after it passed and just in case you didn't get it in the audio she heard her name being spoken even though there isn't sapposed to be audio there. Glad you both enjoyed this and didn't come pare it to the movie It Follows because yes the concept is the same but to me this one is 10 times better. I just wish they didn't show the creature going into Rose because that effect just looks so fake and it takes me out of it every time but I actually like the design for the demon it looks creepy and original as well.

The part that bothered me about this is how the entity toyed with her mind, making be wonder how the two other chains got broken without it stopping them. Just made me feel the entity enjoyed the mind games to let people escape it.

Yeah, the character of the sister sucks hard, not because she's a bad person, but because she's lazily written. The husband isn't great either. But as far as horror goes, I still think the film rocks, hard. The horror is twisted and mean, it's not pleasant, it reminded me of the last act of Hereditary.
