Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm (Live London UK The Word 1993)
Музыка
Fantastic performance of Disarm from SP...live on The Word, an English musical show from the 90's hosted by Terry Christian and Dani Behr.
Psychadelic background during the performance makes it look really trippy

James Iha is the only person in the world who plays the guitar sarcastically.

No - well, depends really. Its a dark sombre song about Billy wanting to kill his parents but couldnt, so he wrote Disarm. As for this version; the lyric "cut that little child" didnt go down well with all media folk in the uk at the time; hence this heavier version to 'mask' that lyric.

The 90's should have never ended...
This was the original version actually. It just never worked in the studio for Butch so it kept on being pushed back but finally the last attempt was done acoustically late around 2am after everyone went back to their hotel. But before all hope was lost. It came out way better than expected so Butch flew down a violinist at last moment from Chicago to Atlanta, laid down the strings and did vocals the following morning at 11am and that was a wrap. Siamese Dream was complete and the rest is history. ❤️

Remember getting in on a Friday night and The Word was on Channel 4, these guys came on and thought they were amazing... brought the album the following week and was gutted that Disarm wasn’t the same 😀
I miss the 90's. SP at their best.
James makes the total difference. What a great performance.

+Mother Bear I was so glad when they re-released _Earphoria_ a couple of years ago (oh, well, "a couple" - it must've been before the days of KZread, now that I think of it...) and I could finally get a hold of this verson on CD, when I had previously only known it as a shit-bitrate mp3-rip.
the two little James Iha solos on this might be my favorite piece of Pumpkins music ever. when i was 16 i was obsessed with downloading as many live bootleg versions of Disarm because i wanted to find the version where Iha's solos sounded the best... lol

Jimmy Chamberlin just kicks ass on the drums here. Easily the most unrecognized drummer of the 90s. It looks like he and Corgan are the only ones who give a shit.

Jimmy is a beast
In interviews, during the dark ages when James was out of the band, Jimmy often claimed that James couldn't play guitar. What an idiotic statement that was. Simply born out of hate.

Do you play guitar or another instrument? How long? I dont necessarily disgree with Chamberlin but I KNOW Billy is a masterful guitarist and is far, far more capable than he ever showed on any recordings.

Best version of this song. I wish they always did it like this live, but they usually did a much more chill version sort of like the one on the album.

To me, this and the studio version are the definitive versions of this tune... no matter how many arrangements B. C. conjures up... THIS is one astounding live take, super well recorded (great visuals too!) and of course... Jimmy Chamberlain!!!

I KNOW Corgan can SHRED, for a fact. I worked at a rock club and I had built a guitar that I was telling some coworkers about and Billy asked to see it and he ended up plugging it into his live rig (this was in the middle of the day during soundcheck) and he strummed some chords, played a Pumpkins riff, THEN FUCKING SHRED UP AND DOWN AND UP AND DOWN AND UP AND DOWN THE NECK! The dude can shred with the best of 'em. It's beyond me why he put up with Ol' Jimbo as long as he did (FYI, Ol' Jimbo is back in the SP's as of late. Yes, 3 guitarist a la The Eagles) My only guess is Billy wanted 2 guitars to sound big live, play complicated harmony parts live and finally so he could play rhythm and concentrate on singing. That's my only guess. Im not familiar with what guitar parts are his or James' throughout the albums. But I do know James is not a necessity, nor was a bassist we won't name by name. The Joe Rogan/Billy Corgan pod cast was fuckin great. Check it out if you haven't yet.

disarm you with this version.
They grunge-a-fied it! As usual, Corgan’s voice is flawless, perfectly on-key, and smooth as honey! 🍯 /s Sloppy A.F., but in a good way-with passion! Nice! 👍 I’d love to hear a remastered version of this performance. I mean, I like me some grunge-ee-ness, but this is pretty rough. Still love it, though!
Remember seeing this on TV as it went out. A time when Billy corgan made GOOD decisions. "Let's turn this tender acoustic ballad into a feedback squall". Fucking great decision. Everything the man did post Machina, not so much
Anyone who thinks Darcy and James were just passengers in this band doesn't know what they're talking about

Peace to Darcy.
SIK!
This version of the song is on the Vieuphoria dvd/vhs. This video isn’t too clear on KZread, but in the dvd the quality is much better and shows that James has a very dull expression while he plays almost as if he didn’t want to be there. I wonder if at 0:54 billy gave him that look because of it?? Just an observation
