SMART Electric Drive | Fully Charged

Ғылым және технология

This is the 260th episode of Fully Charged and just possibly, the very first proper, informative and clear car review. This is very much down to the talent and experience of Jonny Smith, his first time on the series (but definitely not the last)
After watching this, I know I have to up my game, I'm so thrilled Jonny could do this show with us and I'm really intrigued to hear your reaction.
Thank you Smart for flying Jonny and Mark out to Toulouse and organising the cars.
And once again, we could not have done this show without the generous support of all our Patreons. Thank you, and

    In fact I think Johnny should focus mostly on cars and leave the rest to Robert. Because unlike Robert, he actually knows a LOT more about cars, so he can actually do a useful review instead of just doodling around. And he's no less funny! Really enjoyed this one.

    great review, great personality, made me smile. Owned a smart in the past and was great even for the occasional motorway trip. I continue to be confounded by peoples range issues. This is perfect for the city where 100 miles is more than enough for a day or 3 . and charging whilst at work or in the evening is not an issue. This shows good thinking from Smart/Mercedes as ever to recognise reality rather than fantasy in terms of real world use.

    Exactly. The US consumer wants huge, flashy trash cars. (i.e. SUVs and "cross overs") How often do you drive out across a field? Then why do you need a "car" with 3ft ground clearance? Or 28ton cargo capacity?

    Erm... isn't this precisely the generation of Smart cars that will be sold in the US from now on? Like, they literally announced that Smart would only sell electric cars in the States going forward. And these three (ForTwo, Convertible, ForFour) are the ones that start it off.

    In Washington D.C. we have car2go with the old and new Smart, and they are lovely! It's awesome to sneak around big SUV/CUV in the city and make the city more fun to drive along. If insurance in the U.S.A. wasn't a rip off I would buy a Smart 2 seat ED tomorrow!

    3rd World Garage: The smart's draw isn't just about parking space. It's a perfect 2nd car for a typical US family, actually, especially for the folks in/near cities. As for economy, the EV's in another league at 122 MPG equivalent. I'm on my 3rd year with my smart electric as my only car and it's perfect. The electric gives me the cheapest driving I've ever done. In spite of the EPA range rating of 68 miles, I routinely run 85 mile drives. When I want to leave town, I get a rental. The only downside to the smart electric is that they're so damn hard to get - there aren't enough in the 'States to meet demand. I lucked into mine in early 2015 only because a family ordered one and then their job moved them out of state before the car arrived. It was taking 6-8 months from order to delivery, and dealers couldn't order cars to put in a showroom. Though I'd like a bit more range (maybe another 20 miles, actually) and a charger larger than the 3300W unit installed, I love the car. I guess I"m one of the 'exceptions.' ;)

    @EleanorPeterson

    5 жыл бұрын

    No, please don't! Vicki's a terrific gal, but she's also a pro racing driver; bringing her to Fully Charged would turn it into a lad's mag Clarkson era Top Gear, piss-about. Screaming starts, track days, max power, drift round corners, late braking, 0 - 60 times, constant emphasis on bhp, handling, performance, street cred, what's 'cool' ... No. Please, no. Keep Fully Charged as Kryten's idea of a sensible electric future algorithm. Of course cars are part of that future, and they can be fun, too, but at the moment Fully Charged is like the old original BBC Top Gear - Raymond Spitfire Pilot, William Woollard, the nice chap with a beard, some occasional tips on adjusting ignition timing, no schoolboy-level mucking about, just useful, practical stuff. Too much emphasis on car performance would kill this brilliant KZread Channel stone dead. (IMHO) ;-)

    WOW! Just WOW! This one has to be the best car review I've ever seen! It answered all the questions I had even the ones that came to my mind on the fly. What it's like to drive, range, pricing, what is the forfour like compared to fortwo, which one does Jonny prefer. EVERYTHING! You can send this post to Jonny and say marvellous job!

    The Tesla Roadster wasn't manufactured by Tesla, its a Lotus in disguise. Rebadged in San Jose, and e-drivetrain installed, but its certainly not "mass produced".

    Why oh why didn't they put CCS or Chademo on board? Come on, Mercedes.... The I-miev had that back in 2009, and the two cars are very very much alike in their target demographic. But the fact that in 8 years of EV progress, Smart/Mercedes have made a car that is *slower* to charge, and has virtually the same battery size is a weak showing. They've had a lot of chances to improve it over the years, and seem to have dropped the ball.

    Might have been a cost decision I guess. They might argue that the car is just supposed to drive you round town anyways.

    Wobbegong, City appartment dwellers are less likely to have an opportunity to charge at night compared to suburban one family house inhabitants with a garage. Lack of quick charging would be an impediment for sales.

    LMLMD No fast charge means it has a slower maximum charge speed. But it has a much faster standard charge, since the iMiEV was limited to around 3.5kW.

    OriginalPiMan Rapid and regular charging arent related though, and the 7kw on boars the Smart is these days just bog standard for home charging. People expect that and a decent rapid DC facility as well. I am disappointed to say the least. Smart have shot themselves in the foot with the charging. Get the basics right before you try and be clever with radar guided regen and all that jazz.

What the hell is pound feed of tork??? And miles per hour? Sorry but this really annoys me since only 300mln ppl of the 6bln use this weird measurements.

    Uuhh, yet another low range ev, face palm 🤦‍♂️ that costs as much your average consumer car that can do 400-500 miles per range & has low carbon emissions. Slow charging as well. It's a glorified covered electric wheelchair. I love Evs but why do car company's insist on delivering piss poor ranged over priced Evs so they can sell more dirty fossil fuel cars ....

  • @supercooper92

    Okay, that wasn't helpful. I just can't understand the obsession with comparing huge ranges to petrol vehicles. You plug it in overnight (when you're asleep), so you're never making a trip to a petrol station. Surely the range only comes into play if you do more than 100 miles in one day?

  • @DavidSusiloUnscripted

    Harry C. The problem is that the 100 miles is not true 100 miles. Once you add traffic and air condition, have a full trunk, the range drops by 40%. Come winter time, the range drops another 20%. 40 actual miles round trip? That’s just not enough

  • @danmobile

    @danmobile

    5 жыл бұрын

    An EV doesn't lose even close to that range. Traffic doesn't hurt the range at all (not using any energy while idling and AC uses VERY little compared to HEAT). Yes, in Winter you'll see a 20% drop, but only if you run the heater full blast in a freezing climate. If you're in medium climate, heated seats and an occasional heat blast will barely effect your range.

  • @JamesBloomfield93

    "It has 100 miles of range" Aaaand close video. Also it doesn't have any kind of fast charging? Is that a joke? Are they expecting people to pay money for this when compared to... any other EV on the market...?

    So you'd be buying your Smart for road trips and Autobahn cruising then? Main considerion in terms of range for most people will be the round trip dropping off kids to school, driving to work, and back via the supermarket. Many employers offer charging infra. Car is always full in the morning if you have a driveway or garage.

    Sure, but what about that one time a year that you want to take a road trip? This car is totally unsuitable for it because of the low range, which means it can't be your only car, which for a lot of people means they can't buy it because owning two cars is too expensive.

    thats the reason its 10 grand cheaper than a lot of other electric cars obviously. its designed to be a city car, and a study said most journeys are short; www.sustrans.org.uk/sites/default/files/documents/guidelines_16.pdf no need for a big costly battery in a majority of city dwellers cars. if you have an occasional long trip, hire a bigger car, simple really
