I bought one of these a while back and was pretty impressed with it. I've hooked up a relay are using a little power supply that I can use to control a heavier load. This of course bypasses the BMS accessibility to read current and amp hours. I also noticed when I downloaded the new app for reading the cells that it also seems this device data logs which is another nice feature. When using it to power a relay I needed to come up with a power source to trick the BMS transistors into turning on the relay when charging was okay. Thanks for your video it would have helped me a while back when I was trying to figure this out. I can see these being used for solar systems which is what I'm doing at the moment. I did a video also and it's up on KZread you can see it by clicking on my profile

Thanks for the video and for the update. Looks like they're using BQ76940 BMS IC form TI alongside ATmega328p (Arduino). The IC can manage cells between 9-15S, all you have to do is to short certain pins of the chip (see Table 8-3 on the DS). There's also an open source firmware for basic battery management and monitoring, which means this thing could be hacked. BQ76940 is a nice little chip. Have done some work on it myself. It does the job pretty well and I have even designed PCB for that one including the ESP8266

Thanks Daniel, that was a very good introduction. It's obviously aimed for the massive ebike market in China, and I think I might get one for my 14s16p battery even though 50mA balance current probably way too small to be useful with my mongrel cells! (I've had to modify some cellpacks already to swap some leaky cells and it's pain to do). It's nice that an ebike battery can be used for the bike, or for home! I like that this BMS has programmable thresholds, but the noisy reading on cell one is some cause for concern. Hopefully just spurious. Still, it looks like it'll do the job until my packs grow big enough to justify a Batrium system.

Yeah I also think that Ebikes is a perfect system to run it. They have up to 26+s or something. Yeah my cell1 readings was way off. From start it read like 1.9V!! Im going to contact seller and see what it says. I think my unit have an issue

I guess I don't really need one because I balance charge using a 300W 6S lipo charger, but have to do it 3 times - gets a little tedious after a while, especially if I fall asleep or forget and the pack isn't ready! So, I bought a 60A one from Aliexpress and look forward to playing with it, though I don't have a 58V charger yet apart from the 7210A, which would be slow but still usable. Maybe there's a dry joint in Cell 1's path, or a software issue? Looks as if they are multiplexed so only 1 ADC is required. I'll report if mine will have a similar issue.

I suspect the issues on the cell voltages, are caused by not connecting the B- on the BMS to the Battery negative.

Can you program this to charge the battery pack at lower voltage like say 4.1V per cell instead of the regular 4.2V per cell?

This is a bms and not Charger. Charging limits is set at the Charger. This bms have configurable protection voltages yes

Yes , you can actually even less . Go in settings and set parameters . You can set over voltage to 4.1 and release voltage at 4.0 for example.

Hi, when used in a smaller pack let's say 10s the external power most be connected where in the BMS? And at voltage? Thanks

It's probably jumping (I'm building my own BMS) since they are probably using a voltage divider network and by the time we divide the smallest voltage cell, the resolution will be much less since the resolution of the ADC will not change. E.g. If you use the same divider configuration for the 14th cell (58.8v to 4.2v with a ratio of 1/14) then the first cell will also be divided by 14. Therefore the battery will only vary from 0-0.3v and you'll get poor resolution. There are other ways to deal with this, but that's my guess for this board

Very Nice. As you know I have this BMS connected to the same 48v pack from your video. I had a rough time getting it to actively balance. Based on whay you just displayed I believe the issue is I had both Balance control options selected at the same time. I dont think it likes that. The only time I got any balance activity was when I used the Balance Odd and Even under the Other function tab. Looking forward to see how you use this in future projects. FYI from the phone you can lock the BMS where u cannot make any changes on the computer. Just in case you havent seen that yet.

You need to use either balance charge or the normal balance. If you click out the balance charge it will start to balance if you have that condition and all values correct. The odd/even is just a test-function

Looks like a good starting system for many people. The language thing is a problem on the mobile app part. I bought a VR goggle set with Bluetooth controller. The goggles were fine, but the controller didn't work. I went to the manufacturers site and it was in Chinese (?) I tried using the Windows translator function and nothing happened. Sent the whole mess back to Amazon and bought a different brand and this time the controller works great, but no matter what I do I can't see the videos with the goggles. Hope this doesn't happen if I try the BMS.

That would be great for a small emergency power box (like what Jehu is building for Puerto Rico). Be good to plug in the laptop/phone from time to time to see what it's doing.

the ssr can be used on 3D printers for heated beds. Maybe as a project for you. With all stuff you have got. try build a 3d printer or something else like a 3d printer.

This looks really nice, but what is the current charge rate of this BMS? Can it charge a battery at 30A?

My battery has 76v but the leads coming from my bms only has 12 volts with no load. is that ok or is it not working properly?

I previously bought one of the BMS boards like "GOING OFF GRID" formerly "FLIPPING 720" uses and it works very well, but no connection for monitoring.

Thats the cheap versions. Problem with those is that you cannot set voltage levelels and you cant see whats going on. You kind of dont know if they are in balance or not and have to add extra voltage displays. Thats why I like this version as a step up. I hope to look more deeply into it later on but need to get that cell1 sorted first.

Any chance you have like to your specific model? Your links go to a general search, with many different vendors, and i've asked several if they had a datasheet for serial interface protocol, and those that responded said no :-/

How big of wire gauge fits in the C- and B- holes?

there is a calibration tab there for voltage and temp sensors you need to set this up when you first get it

I am at the stage now researching BMS. This video has really helped. Do you know what are the differences between a BMS for, Lifepo4 and Li-ion? As I am using 18650's 8s8p. They are Li-ion, but, would a Lifepo4 BMS work, or are the set voltages not right, and so I must ensure, especially if I buy the none adjustable BMS, to get the LI-ion version only. I guess this adjustable version would be a better option, but I wold like to understand . Thanks for some great informative videos.

You have to use a Li-ion BMS with Li-ion cells. A LiFePO4 BMS won't work because those cells are full at 3.6V where Li-ions are full at 4.2V.

It would be cool to get a access to the source code of the bms. It seems to have almost everything you need but with a crappy interface. We could easily convert that interface to be more "batrium-like"

Not sure if its doable to even get close :) Why I say that is because the hardware is so simple. But yes you can do alot with it but i would say its easier to write from scratch. Though add a better MCU like and ESP32 and your set for something. But its it worth mentioning all the hours put into a good BMS. I would take one of the existing on github and continue with if i were to do it :)

Thanks :) I want to try one of this BMS (100A version is now about 65 EUR) for a Chevy Volt battery. It is 16 kWh (12S8P), about 44 V nominal and the discharge rate will be about 5500 W maximum. With two 100A version of this BMS (one for 4 parallel) do you think it will be enough? Thank you!

Thanks. I wouldnt personally parallel Them because you cannot guarantee they Will share the load even and in worst case you overload the first and next dies too :) with that Said IF you make sure to stay below what 1 can handle easily it is generally not a big problem.

Hello. Just saw your video and I have some questions. Are there any BMSes available for lipos? Since the discharge cutoff is usually higher at 3.2/3.3v. I can't seem to find many on the market that do that.

Its basically THE same bottom voltage as the other but for rc you stop earlier. Just get a programble bms for 3.7v nominal cells and it Will work :)

With only 50mA, will this only work on smaller packs or will it work with a 500mAh range with 80-100P?

Can you use a 13s bms in a 12s battery???

Do anyone know if possible to reset this bms to factory settings. I bought one, connected as should, first time i got a lot of power according battery specs. Then i decided to reduce outut current, notcto drine battery quick, and not to go in full power. Looks like i messed with something, but since that, at full throttle motor get disengaged regularly, and some time under load computer going off itself. Battery votage is not going below. Some one gave advice, that bms output currwnt is too low. I adjusted it back to maximum 40a(not sure if needed minus on front of 40). Any way still going disconnected itself. I found that bms is notcok, as, by connecting battery directly to controller, motor going fine and computer is not going off itself. Any ideas? I tryed to reinstall app and disconnected minus from battery to bms. No success.

On 60kWh battery bank Batrium cost is nothing. You need to set in proportion what it did cost to build that battery bank :) This BMS i would say is ok for banks up to 1kWh or so :)

Its more about capacity. Its made for 20-80Ah. Then Its Up to you to decide how much above you want to raise it. The more capacity the less chance it Will have to Keep the battery in balance

Hi from Italy, I have a 13s ebike battery. Unfortunately, a group of cells burned out. I decided to remove the dead cells so that I now have 12s. I then soldered pin bridge of the Smart BMS as schematic, to transform it from 13s to 12s. Can I now connect bms to the battery and uart box to PC? Or should I change some other parameter first? Software in BMS still working as 13s and will burn everything?

You need to check if that BMS even works with 12s. Its not all BMS systems you can do that on.

Yes and no. The company also offers this BMS for LiFePO4, but you have to make a choice between the Li-ion and LiFePO4 version when ordering.

Hej! Tack för din video! Jag bygger en del batterier till elscootrar och har ett problem som jag undrar om du vet hur man kommer förbi? Själv setupen är så att man har ett original batteri på 36/42v som jag kopplat i serie med ett 12v batteripack. Då får man upp hastigheten och hela systemet kan klara av det. Men problemet är när man ska ladda batterierna så behöver man koppla ut 12v batteriet och ladda det separat. Såg en som säljer såna pack med en ny bms som man inte behöver koppla ut när man ska ladda 12v packet och undrar om du vet om det är en smart bms som denna använder då den inte vill berätta va den gjort. Tack på förhand!

Nice video, just wondering if you figured what was causing the jumpy voltage on cell 1? Lugemont has a video on these smart bms and didn't show the voltage issue or not being able to change parameters from the mobile app, he used mobile app version 2.0.1006. Please let me know if you solved your issue and how it is currently working. I want to order one but if its got glitches I will wait for a stabler smart bms. Thanks in advance...

Indeed. On my 8S unit I had jumpy/low voltages on cells 1 and 2 when only the balance wires were connected. After connecting B- on the BMS to the battery negative, these voltages normalized and were completely stable.

Yes, I confrmed this on my 8S unit too. Hoping to hover around the 24v to 32v, which seems a good range for, effectively a 24v system. I am using modbus reader to read the settings from the unit, and hope soonish, to read on my arduino. It's a great monitoring unit, but with recycled cells, not too sure about balancing effectivness. Still experimenting.

Just hook up to your raspberry via serial interface. Though you need to know the protocol. I dont have the protocol but it might work with my solar-sis system that I run on Raspbery pi.

Can you modify this BMS to have a higher balancing current? Switch out the resistors for something higher? I'm not sure how these boards work. Hopefully that first cell is something to do with calibration? Or maybe its fault from the factory (cheap chinese, probably has no quality control) Also the temperatures being different is probably cheap components, cheap thermistors. You should test them on multimeter to see if they read the same.

I did callibrate that first cell from 1900 to 4100.... But i guess something is off on that board I got making it jumping all around. Temperature is not as big problem as the voltage jumping. Its possible to callibrate that too :)

No. You need a DC DC converter. A bms is protection and management for battery only.

12ax7 You can set balancing to run 24h like I do. I have 30Ah 14S battery on my E-bike and this BMS is life saver. I set overvoltage protection to 4.1v to save cells life and BMS shut off charging when voltage is reached. Last version of app is on English ad its simply Amazing what you can monitor and change. You can even set pin and lock power out your battery with just a click. There is logs for every cells etc... Much more. Amazing SMART BMS.

Charge current is something you set on ur charger. Some bms systems can controll the Charger based on individual cell voltages but they are few and cost more. IF you ask about over current protection a fuse is needed. Dont know IF this One have built in to controll something based on current

The one I purchased seems to be the Mini Version of the JST-XH. Looks the same but spacing quite smaller.

Great video. If I wanted to extend the life of my 18650 pack and charge each cell to 4.05V max, would this BMS do the trick? Or would the actual lithium-ion charger also need to be capped at 4.05V multiplied by (x) the number of cells in series? Thanks

southpaw a Charger set to 42v would be 4.2v per cell. No matter what THE balancing on THE bms is set at. IF u set balancing to 4.1 and charge to 4.2 the bms Will drain the packs to 4.1..

There is several videos out there. The simplest is just a couple of relays dumping the load to a big ass resistor. But there is so much more needed to get a proper system that will protect you :)

DIY Tech & Repairs correct. It will not be a balanced discharge. But this is what almost everyone does though. All the esk8 are build like that. Balanced charging and direct discharge bypassing the BMS. This is due to a high discharge current needed in case of electric skateboards. Sometimes it’s way over 100A. BMS can’t handle that

@@DIYTechRepairs Fan vad grymt! Har febrilt sökt efter guide överallt utan att hitta något vettigt. Vet du hur man räknar ut vilken amp styrka på bms som är lämplig? Bygger ett 10s6p 36v 17,2a
