A lot of this actually isn't CGI. This movie was made back when practical effects were still a big thing. So a lot of what you see is for example models of buildings that hey used perspective to make look bigger. They made the hobbits look as small as they are using perspective too. There's more CGI in the later movies with the big battles, but it all looks very very good for how old the movie is. I think the mix of CGI and practical effects makes a lot of the scenes look a lot better than if it was just CGI.

True, most closeups is allways practical effects for the most part in these movies. Only the big battles and some other scenes is CGI, They put alot of hours in to making all the armors, chainmails and such. When looking at the Hobbit movies however, thats mostly CGI, Even the armors the orcs in those movies use looks fake as hell lol or seem to be made of latex or something. These movies atleast seemt to use real leather, and metal . the LOTR movies is prob my favorite movies.

LoTR is originally a trilogy of books. It's also the inspiration for much, if not most, of western fantasy media as well (like Harry Potter or Game of Thrones). Hell, it partly helped create the entire genre. It draws inspiration from mainly Anglo-Saxon and Nordic literature and mythology. Also, even as long as the three movies are in extended edition, a lot has to be cut out or you'd have to make 6-12 movies or something.

Strictly speaking, LOTR was not written as a trilogy, but as a single long story; it was published in three volumes in 1954-55 because of economic conditions in post-WWII Britain. Similarly, Peter Jackson & Co. produced the three movies back to back to back over a period of 14 months of continuous filming. This was unprecedented at the time, although several franchise series have since been filmed the same way, once LOTR showed that it could be done successfully.

When I was a kid I read the entire series of books almost every year. They were an important part of my childhood. I saw this movie with my then wife and my brother, both of whom had also grown up with the books. We were very skeptical about the movie. But it satisfied all three of us. I have to admit this movie is for me the only one that works nearly perfectly. The others I like but I find flaws...I am too picky because I so love the books. But The Fellowship of the Ring is by far the best adaptation of Tolkien ever. And careful with that term "precious!" ; -)

Great reaction. The LOTR trilogy is still the best fantasy series out there, even 20 years later. The storytelling is incredible. It almost feels like actual mythology. Interesting fact - lots of the effects were practical effects and miniatures, not CG, although they used CG to augment the practical effects. For instance those two huge statues on the river were actually miniatures that were about six feet tall, and even most of the inside of Moria were miniatures too.

Enjoyed watching the movie with you! A note about Galadriel's mirror: the scene in the movie is rather different than the version in the book. Sam in the book had been fascinated by the Elves from childhood, and while recuperating in Lothlorien he remarks to Frodo how he would like to see some Elf magic. So Galadriel shows the mirror to both hobbits. The visions they see are more ambiguous than Frodo's visions in the movie. Sam sees a series of unrelated scenes, some of which imply that terrible things are happening in the Shire. Frodo sees a series of visions that seem to be related to the history of the Ring, but as the last of these visions fade to darkness, the mirror goes utterly black, and for the only time in the book, he sees full on the Eye of Sauron, "lidless, wreathed in flame." It is a terrifying scene, and Frodo is left shaking all over.

Obligatory fun fact, because I haven't seen it in another comment yet: when Aragorn fights with the Uruk Hai, there's a moment when the Uruk throws a knife at Aragorn and he swats it away with his sword. That really happened, no movie trickery involved. The Uruk's actor was supposed to throw the knife at a safe distance, but accidentally threw it right at Viggo Mortensen who actually managed to deflect it with his sword.

Always interesting to see the reaction of someone who doesn't know the stories or even share the culture. I look forward to the next ones. The three movies follows a story that spanned six books (Over 1200 pages, often published in one big volume). The story simply doesn't fit in one movie, not even two. J.R.R. Tolkien's books had already been famous for 50 years when they made the movies, and Jackson told us in advance that he would have to split the story into three movies, so we weren't disappointed because we expected it. By the way, the dirty man chewing on a carrot out in the streets of Bree early in the movie.. that's Peter Jackson. Weed used to just mean any plant undesirable in a garden. The generation born before the hippies said "grass" when they meant hasjisj, hemp, or similar. Then the books of The Lord of the Rings became popular and although the books actually were talking about tobacco-like plants; broadleaf, the hippies adopted the term "smoking weed" from the books and used it for marihuana etc. And that's how "weed" got to mean what it does today. At least, that's how it was related to me by someone who lived through that time.

(to other Tolkien fans, my explanation is designed to be general) So Gandalf is basically an angel who has been sent from heaven by the gods of Middle Earth to aid the men & elves in defeating Sauron. The gods have forbidden him from directly opposing Sauron because in the past, when the gods fought against Sauron's master Morgoth, the battles would level mountains & sink entire continents beneath the oceans. In addition, Gandalf would have to invoke so much power to fight Sauron that it's likely he would be corrupted & become the new Dark Lord himself.

Relations to either is just coincidence and should be taken as such and nothing more. The inspirations are there, sure, but they are just that, inspirations.

And on a second note from my OG comment, I am not sure where you are getting your sources from, but there has been, to my knowledge, no verification or statement made anywhere that Gandalf invoking the power to directly fight Sauron would corrupt him. My understanding from past research is that the Valar prohibited the Istari from invoking their power to dominate or subdue the free will of the people of Middle-Earth and in doing so, becoming Tyrannical. Which is what happened to Saruman. And even in Saruman's case, his decent is not as black and white as it is depicted in the films. The one complaint I have about the trilogy is the that Saruman's intentions were not completely expressed as his goal had nothing to do with "serving" Sauron. Saruman only joined Sauron as a ploy. He wanted to get the One Ring himself, if anything, to use it or craft his own. At this point, Saruman had already attempted to craft a Ring of Power but it did not have the power to contend with Sauron. When Gandalf comes to seek his counsel, there is a moment in the book where Gandalf takes notice that he is wearing this ring and even referred to himself at one point as Saruman of Many Colors. Which is what he would have become had he gotten the One Ring. Anyway, I am ranting. Case and point the use of their innate magical abilities was not the part of them that would be corrupting. It would be the use of that power to dominate the wills of others. In the book, Saruman believed that with Gandalf, they both could eventually dominate Sauron's will which is why he asked Gandalf to join with him. His goal by then was to obtain power, which is a strict violation of the restriction the Valar put on them when they were sent to Middle-Earth. And I think this is why Gandalf would not take the ring wither. He knew that it would instigate him to use his power to the extent he could and in the process, he would fall victim to the seductive influences that comes with dominating the wills of others.

Notice that when Gandalf reached down to the Ring on the floor of Bilbo's house he didn't actually touch it. In fact, throughout the three movies no one other than a Ringbearer (Sauron, Isildur, Gollum, Bilbo and Frodo) ever touches it directly. All others handle it by its chain. This was not true in the books, but I think it was a creative decision by Peter Jackson for the movies, to subtly highlight the relationship between the Ring and its bearers.

Thank you for this reaction to my favorite trilogy of all time. The good thing about these movies (especially if you're watching the extended editions) is that even though the scope of the lore is too large to take in in just one or two viewings, the director and writers do an excellent job of pacing in such a way that about the time you start asking a question and thinking that you might have missed something they put in a scene that answers those questions for you. In this way, they've done a great job of educating the viewer on background context while keeping them immersed in this epic story. It's almost comical at times to watch reactors ask a question and get the answer a few seconds later. That's just an example of great story telling - keep your audience informed but still allow for suspense, mystery and intrigue.

The word you are looking for regarding the ending is "suspense". It is definitely intentional to leave the viewer with questions, which creates interest to continue the story. All three movies are parts of the same story, so the fellowship of the ring is like the first act of a play, which sets the stage & establishes the ideas. The Two Towers is my personal favorite because of the rising action, but all three parts of the LOTR are well done in jackson's adaptation

The Argonath (the giant statues on the river) actually aren't CGI! They are miniatures. In these films, Peter Jackson used practical effects (such as miniatures) as much as possible.

I'm so glad you've started reacting to Lord of the Rings! I hope you continue and film your reactions to The Two Towers and Return of the King as well. (To be honest, you can skip the live action Hobbit movies and Rings of Power, in my opinion.) Tolkien's writing was formative for me--my father and I read them together when I was young. In both versions (book and film) I was always impressed by how vast in scope it felt, like the world continues on and on beyond the scenes we get to see, full of real people with full lives.

Peter Jackson doesn't star in the movie; he has a cameo sitting on a barrel. In fact, he and his two kids appear in cameos, in separate scenes, in all three movies. Heck! Half the population of New Zealand, where the movie was filmed, seems to have appeared as extras at one time or another.

When they talk about "weed", what they're talking about is pipe-weed, which is basically just tobacco. It gets a different name because tobacco comes from the Americas, and Tolkien named a lot of things based on old English.

  • @ojidono8407
    @ojidono84076 ай бұрын

For context, despite how the movies portray it, the author of the books Tolkien most likely intended thr pipe-weed they smoke to be more like tobacco than marijuana since he was a big fan of pipe tobacco himself (plus he was a catholic, and catholics are not allowed to smoke marijuana). I hope you enjoy this series, God bless.

The movie 'Lord of the Rings' is one (11 hour, in Extended Version) movie. You watched the first 1/3 of the movie. Don't expect a conclusion after 'The Two Towers' either. Think of it as an Intermission.

The power of the ring, when a mortal like Isildur or Frodo puts it on, effectively shifts the wearer into the "spirit realm", as this realm exists simultaneously with the physical world. This is what Frodo sees when he puts on the ring, and why the wraiths suddenly look like dead men again, instead of cloaks covering invisible bodies. Sauron exists primarily in the spirit realm, as he's a Maiar spirit. Gandalf and Saruman, and the other Istari are also Maia but they were given physical bodies resembling men to serve as advisors, and to a certain extent, protectors of the world of men and the natural world. This is why Sauron doesn't vanish when wearing the ring. The power of the ring itself is bound to the spirit of Sauron, so as far as it's abilities, it essentially amplifies Sauron's power, his dark, magical abilities because it binds him to the others who wear the rings. That being said, Sauron failed somewhat miserably in the execution of the construction and distribution of the rings. The Dwarven rings failed, mostly due to the Dwarven love of gold overpowering the influence of Sauron, not to mention some were melted by dragon fire in various incidents. The Elven rings were constructed free of Sauron's corruption (though still tied to the ultimate fate of the ring), so those didn't even work properly. Basically, the entire effort resulted in nine Ring Wraiths, the Nazgul who were loyal to Sauron and very useful while riding on the back of horses or fell beasts, but not very useful in a large-scale battle. The construction of the One Ring, at the very end of the day, was mostly a failure. It's original intent was the control Middle-earth. It's actual functional purpose was vague other than it being a very handy way of killing Sauron without dealing a single blow. Maybe he should have stuck with a sky beam or more conventional means of being an evil villain.

LOTR? I am here. 😊 Ya the ring has the magic words on it like a contract binding the other rings to it. It’s like “read the fine print before you buy” situation. 😂 The rings are like cellphone contracts.

Actually in the books Sauron is defeated by the high kings of the Elves and Numenor who both perish as a result of the battle. Isildur cuts the ring from Sauron's corpse.

This one is the Best. The next two are good and tell the story. Im of the opinion as someone else mentioned the others aren't necessary and dont reach the heights of LOTR or Fellowship. They can be entertaining though...just not as perfect. ...as mentioned by CaptainDerp the 1977 "The Hobbit" is really the film to watch for the Events prior to The fellowship, plus its an amazing Animation. You see what happened before Frodos Journey with Bilbo's beginning and his experiences. *thumbsup* One of my lifelong cats was poorly and passed a litttle while back so I havent been around, this was a great choice to watch though, was glad to see this vid and relax a little. Be well

You're the first reactor I've seen who mentions the god-like power when Sauron shows up. Sauron was on the same level as Gandalf and Saruman (and the Balrog in Moria), although Sauron was more likely more powerful than the two wizards. All of them were Maiar (a sort of angelic beings). They were the lower tier of the Ainur, the upper tier being the Valar (basically gods). Sauron's power also shines through in the Second Age, guiding the Elves of Eriador to create the Rings of Power (although he didn't forsee that Celebrimbor and the Elven smiths would create the Elven Rings), going from prisoner to advisor to the King of Numenor in just a few years and creating a cult for Morgoth (the fallen Vala) and even surviving the Sundering of Numenor. I think only Galadriel can be compared to Sauron in power-level (although there's Tom Bombadil in the Fellowship book). Sorry about the lore-dump though....

These stories were the only books my hubby and his family read growing up. I had read The Hobbit but when the movies came out he said I needed to read them again before we saw them in theatre. Peter Jackson did keep to the books as much as possible. The books have so much detail that just could not be included in a normal length movie.

Peter Jackson doesn't play any actual role in any of the films, he just has cameo appearances, i.e. brief moments where you can see him as an extra (unimportant character with zero relevance to the plot). In this one he's one of the men that the hobbits see when they enter Bree to meet with Gandalf in the pub, standing along the road in the dark.
