A lot of people like it not because it is super scary, but because of the structure of the film. It plays out much like a Noir mystery film. It's like a horror detective film.

I find the humid atmosphere of the film so pleasant. The cinematography is just great. I actually find it very cozy, weirdly enough. It was a scary movie when I was a kid, now it’s a comfort movie I put on when I’m hit with melancoly.

There are so many subliminal images in this film. One example is the caretaker a Shelter Mountain who does the card trick for Rachel. After many failed attempts before she finally leaves the office and he gives it one last go he draws the seven of spades and she finally concedes and says "thats it' dispite it still being wrong. Spades are used to dig (as on a well) and seven is the number of days. It's a movie worth multiple viewings...... Oh and sulphur is the smell you were looking for when it comes to a demonic presence.

I should add, as a seasoned horror hound, this came out when I was 18 and it still managed to deeply disturb me. And, yes, it's more of a psychological horror/mystery than something full on visceral.

Excellent spot about that 7 of spades! I love little hidden hints like this throughout a movie and i would never have noticed this. Thanks for confirming what the weird smell is too, i knew it was something that isn't too nice haha. Thanks for the comment and checking out the video mate 😊

@@JackWillReact there's great foreshadowing in this film. The scene where Rachel copied the tape for Noah the fly appears on two separate screens but it's the same size despite the second screen being noticeably smaller than the main screen.

One of my favorite horror movies of all time. I love love how the story built and was more of a mystery than a traditional horror movie with just jumpscares and gore. Those can be great fun too, but I think it made for an overall better story and left the ending and the twist at the end more of a surprise since it didn't have that cashgrab traditional horror movie pace/plot. Side note, Dan is super attractive. The eye contact and the smile? Damn. Looking forward to seeing more of the two of you!

I definitely prefer a horror that is built on more of a mystery, makes you think etc as opposed to gore horrors which are just there for more of a shock factor. Haha, I'll also pass this side note on to Dan, i'm sure he'll greatly appreciate that!!

I saw this movie in the theatres when it came out in 2002 with a bunch of friends everyone there was freaking out it was the first of its kind many of the cliches today came from the popularity of this film so it was scary as shit back in the day. Not to mention at the time there were so many terrible horror movies and the storyline in this was actually amazing. After we all saw the movie we would call it each others houses and whisper 7 days as a silly joke. God I feel old

This movie scared the shit out of me when I watched it back in 2002 at the age of 14. I had nightmares for weeks! First and only horror movie to do that to me. It doesn't seem that impressive rewatching it now, but at the time it was seriously disturbing lol.

There are two sequels and a short movie after this movie. “2005 The Ring Two” “”2005 Rings short film” that takes place between this movie and “The Ring Two” and 2017 Rings that takes place about 13 years after the Ring Two. I also would recommend you both checking them out AS WELL as the Original Japanese movies “Ringu, Ringu 2 and Ringu Birthday. And everyone who’s commented and suggested The Grudge YES definitely a must see.

The end shows you that if you made a copy and showed it to someone else, you would be spared for spreading her story because in the asylum she said she wanted to be heard, by showing it to someone else you are spreading her story, that’s why she made her son make the copy and now he is gonna have to show it to someone else, Rachel already showed it to her ex so she was automatically spared from the start, Rachel’s husband didn’t spread her story so he died.

The movies tone and build up wiuldve been completely ruined if it built up to one big cheesy jumpscare at the end. Or when a scene is scaring the shit out of you without any jumpscare at all, like Samara crawling out of the TV.The way you know a movie is building tension right is when you jump at the more subtle "jumpscares". Like the TV static kicking in after the tape plays. The movie balanced the horror perfectly. Its like people who watch the blair witch project for the first time expecting a jumpscare fest and then being disappointed when it isnt that.

  • @TheRemyLeBeau

The Ring is indeed more about creepy men, terrible pacing, lousy directing and below-par writing. Which is usually the case for remakes. Since Hollywood is more focused on jumpscares and the original didn't really have any, this movie kind of falls flat. Japanese horror is generally known for either explicit gore or suspense, so they didn't really have much to work with except for the story. The problem then becomes that the director didn't seem to understand what the strength of the original movie was, so it focused on different aspects that didn't really complement the story. If you'd have watched the original Japanese movie (usually referred to as "Ringu", due to the Japanese pronunciation) you'd see the same movie with a lot of suspense through camera work, better pacing because it _feels_ more unsettling, and actually a slightly more cohesive storyline. It also refrains from showing you the visual gore the US remake added (plus, they're not showing Samara's face at all behind the long hair), so it uses your own imagination against you. That's how good psychological horror works well, by _not_ showing you things and letting your mind run wild. But if you want to explore a more ... _fun_ movie, why don't you check out the Japanese movie _Battle Royale_ ? It doesn't feel like it's a great movie in terms of acting, but the simple story and the execution is quite enjoyable.
