Small Prey for Small Wolves

The core of the upcoming WolfQuest Saga* is the new AI system that we first showed in a devblog a year ago, with very young pups walking a bit wobbly when they first emerge from the den. Since then, we've been building on that XP system, most significantly when the pups are learning how to hunt elk late in their first year. But pups are learning and gaining experience every month as they grow.
Drawing on biologists' understanding of wolf pup development, we've created several tiers of hunting interest and experience. Pups reach the first of these tiers - the Early Predatory Drive - in June (when they're about ready to abandon the den). This is when they begin tracking scents, stalking, and pouncing on interesting things, real or imagined.
The pups keep gaining experience from these behaviors and, in July (generally during the Loaf at Rendezvous Site quest), they'll reach the next tier: High Predator Drive. This is when they start noticing small prey around the homesite, such as toads and voles. These summer pups become very interested in these little critters, following them, pouncing on them, and playing with them -- the exciting new toys of the season.
Pups will keep gaining XP as they practice their hunting skills with the toads and voles, which will come in handy later in the summer…

Honestly it's such a relief to see these frequent updates. And they're making steady progress too. A lot of indie games will give you two updates, disappear off the face of the earth for 6 months, and then patch three bugs and add a feature no one was expecting or wanting.

Oh my goodness!! This is SO cute, it's going to add so much life to the time spent at the rendezvous! And it does make for a good transition from young pups into learning to hunt in the fall. Very excited to see it in action!

I remember when I was a wolf-obsessed tween, and I frothed at the mouth when I discovered legacy WolfQuest. It fills my now-adult heart with so much joy and pride, seeing how far this amazing game has come and is continuing to go. 💖 Thank you, WolfQuest Devs, you made thousands of wolf-loving kids into wildlife-passionate adults and have made so many magical and meaningful memories with your hard work!

This is something small being added into the game and yet it still brings everything together! I love the idea of little wolf pups pouncing on small rodents and amphibians 😂 You know what they say, "To start becoming a hunter takes small pounces!"

I think they said something about toads a while ago (not sure though), but I really wasn't expecting voles! I think it's a really cool feature that the pups can practice their hunting skills early and gain XP, and it's freaking adorable. Great work! :D

this addition sounds like it's gonna add a lot of depth. it reminds me of what i loved from shelter 2 but incorporated into a much fuller scale project that is consistently being improved upon!! and with wolves!!!!

The toads are FINALLY in the game! I remember the early devblog "Vote for a new animal" that had a pup pouncing a toad, and now finally six years later it's going to happen!
I wonder if the experience gain will differ between the pups as they learn to hunt? Perhaps one of them is noticeably falling behind in development and they are then more vulnerable during hunts or more hungry since they can't catch toads and voles. At the moment with the wobbly to normal walk it seems like all the pups gain experience at the same time but I do think it would be cool for maybe the runts to be lagging behind a bit.

I think individuals varying would be interesting- I personally would favour it being impacted by their temperament or personality vs the runt. I've met many a runt more full of vigor than the biggest in the litter once grown... also I ended up renaming a runt of mine ingame to "Livewire" because she was always starting the others off. First to poke the nose out last to lie down always at a stick or imaginary thing. Also I can run a -2 to all stats ironwolf... Maybe the more cautious and / or lazy gain slower? If they go that route.

I am SO excited for this, seeing this game go from somewhat low quality game where you fine a mate and raise pups (First game not this one!) to stuff like this is so cool. I have always wanted to play a game just like this, and you guys are making that happen, slowly but I don't really mind, thank you devs for making this happen!

@@microwaveablenukes1492 the best dino simulator would be Isle. It's a really popular dino game at this time, but tbh, not as detailed as the gem, Wolfquest.
I love this so much. They look so cute while chasing around the toads.

Maybe it would be cool to make an animation where the pup stumbles over the mouse/toad. They run faster than them so it would be realistic wouldn’t it?

I think the mice heard through my headset about the voles being added as snacks and playthings for the pups, because just then one started scurrying in between the walls lol! They're not pleased. But I am. Those toads look really good!
Honestly a wonderful update its a fantastic transition to see these pups chasing the new critters and i think the critters will add a lot of life to the loafing phase (and hopefully exploring) of the game as well as i can see this comfortably transitioning into the pups chasing and catching the rabbits i often see foolishly sprinting through my rendezvous. i'd love to see them skittering around (uninteractable) with your main wolf exploring but i understand if that's a heavy load on the codes.
This is really exciting! I'm really loving WolfQuest 3 so far!! :D Now that I have a new gaming laptop, I can actually play through and immerse myself into the game. I'm really looking forward to the progression of the pups and how my pack grows!
I play wolfquest almost every single day for a little bit and have been doing this to calm myself from the daily stresses of life for a long time now and I just restarted playing the original game because I felt nostalgic for it and im soooo so excited for this my soul is so happy rn. this game seriously means a lot to me and its amazing that it started as a small project with the minnesota zoo and now its becoming this huge diverse in depth wolf ecology game.. seriously feels so unreal growing with this game

will we end up being able to see the personality traits of our pups? it’s not always super obvious what traits they have by watching them as pups (plus i’m always busy feeding, hunting and marking territory to pay too much attention to their personalities), but i’d love to be able to see it on their page in “my wolves” once they’ve grown, even though we can’t change it :)

They have bones and items to nibble on, thier siblings to chase and also nibble on, and now they have actual prey to practice! And if none of those are of interest, there's always mom and dad 🐺

Do you guys have plans for what happens to your family pack when you die from age or as an iron wolf? Will you be able to become your mate if they are still alive? If it's just the pups do wolves stay in family groups or move on. I would expect them to move on because since there isn't any mating pair irl but in the game maybe we can pick a pup to be leader and go out to find a mate then return? Losing hours of progress will hurt a lot, maybe we should have 2 ironwolf modes, 1 everything is gone and the other you can fall back to an existing wolf.

When your iron/elder wolf dies, it just skips to the end. The mate continues raising the pups, and a lot of the time, some of them won't survive. The surviving pups are accessed through the family tree of your wolf then, where you can grow them and play as them. If both you and your mate dies, and you don't get a new mate before your death, then all the pups will die to starvation, illness, and predation since they have no parents to protect and feed them. And some pups do stay with their family packs, but some will also disperse. The whole point of Ironwolf is to be the hardcore playstyle. And this system already exists. If you want to "fall back on an existing wolf" after dying, don't make that wolf an ironwolf. You can still play the ironwolf difficulties without being an ironwolf and it doesn't change the gameplay at all except allowing you to reload after you die. Ironwolf is the "One-Life, One-Death" mode. Just like real wolves. You have to be more cautious. That's the whole point. To have an Ironwolf function like a non-ironwolf is silly. The ironwolf achievements would be pointless then, and easy to obtain. It isn't meant to be that way.

@@tobiramaisbesthokagewhen they are full grown you will basically just start a new game with one of them as a dispersing two year old. You can’t resume inside the existing pack you just died leading. All of your living wolves should be playable. I, along with others, wish we could disperse with at least two other siblings of the same gender (how the NPC wolves in game do) from the existing pack after your death. That would be neat. And would mean your sibling(s) would likely stick around with you and your mate for a bit or a year until they decide to depart for their own mate.

I said the same thing about a second generation iron wolf within the same pack save as well. It’s not fair to disperse an entire strong pack because of one death lol but I get it
