New AI System for the Saga

The new AI system, which Tommi has been working on for quite awhile, is in in good shape now, so let's take a look at it.
First, to clarify: This isn't new AI for the animals -- it's a new version of our AI system, which Tommi first designed and built almost six years ago. It has served us well -- but after using it for all that time, Tommi decided that we needed a new, improved version to handle the kinds of wolf behaviors that we want to create in the Saga.* This new system makes it easier and faster to create new animal behaviors, and especially to create more complicated behaviors, involving interactions between animals.
This new AI system also has an important new feature for the Saga: experience levels for the pups as they grow up. In the old AI system, pups were pups, and behaved the same whether they were four weeks old, just emerging from the den, or two months old at the rendezvous site. Now, pups have eight experience levels and, as they grow and develop, they'll gain experience and level up -- with each new level unlocking new behaviors.
So when the pup first emerge from the den, they're in the Clumsy level, rather unsteady on their feet. But they're very curious about this new world they find themselves in, and they're exploring and pushing the envelope of their abilities (and their balance). In doing these things, they gain experience and will soon level up to the next level, where they'll have most of the behaviors they've always had in the game. And then, as they grow, pups will adopt new playful actions and the beginnings of a predatory drive. Eventually, in the fall, they'll begin learning how to hunt, leveling up through several tiers of hunting ability on their way to becoming a fully capable young wolf.
We have plenty of work ahead of now to develop the Saga, but the first phase shown in today's devblog (Clumsy) will be in the next game update. That update won't be for awhile, as we still have some work to do with this new AI. So stay tuned for more news!
* In the WolfQuest Saga, the game will continue on after the summer rendezvous site. Your pups will keep growing, learning how to hunt and then helping (in their own way) raise the next year's litter of pups, and eventually (in most cases) dispersing to form or find a pack of their own. We are deep in development of the Saga and do not have a release date for it. The Saga will be a free update.

@@caitlindavis3552it'll happen! They just don't release dates of when it could arrive because of possible bugs and glitches. Can't blame them for taking their time to make everything clean and awesome to play :D
This is really neat. I never really thought about this before but it really looks great! One thing I’d really like to see along with this would be the interactions with ravens. As it stands they are seen more as pests, but don’t they sometimes play with puppies and get attached to specific wolves? Seeing the ravens change from just carcass munchers to allies would really awesome!

Exactly. In the old game the way you mostly located elk herds were from the ravens circling above, it'd be so cool to see some of those pros of having ravens around to come back!

Yup! Wolves and ravens have a longstanding relationship of mutualism. It's beautiful, and would be SO COOL to see introduced to the game!!

That’d be so cool! Maybe if a raven gets attached to a certain pup, when playing as that said pup the raven will continue to follow and help the wolf by leading them to carcasses or herds
It would be so cool if, for the next year in the saga, some of your old pups stay with you to help raise new pups, help with hunting, and other stuff. It would be AWESOME if eventually you had a whole pack to help you.

@@MysticFoxWildlifeArt My assumption is, you'd take over the younger born of the pack. So if your wolf lasted 4 breeding seasons, but died on the 5th, you'd take over which ever 2 year old was with the pack at that point, so maybe not a wolf from litter 1 but probably one that came from litter 3 because those would be the 2 year mark and ready for dispersal by the time breeding season 5 rolled in and the origin wolf died.

@@Zanuvar I don’t understand most of that, are you saying that it will most likely be you can only play as the pups form the year of and or before your wolf died, ie if they lived to be 8 you could paly as pups fromyear 7 or 8?
Their little wobbles! Gosh, this is so cute! I’m so excited to see where this all goes! I’m especially excited to see the older pups, but I can certainly wait patiently for that 👀
Being able to see your pups grow up and start hunting with you and taking care of other pups sounds really cool

I love the idea of experience levels for the pups! It will make watching they grow and learn so much more interesting. Does this mean some pups can learn faster than others or if your an overprotective parent can your pups learn slower? Future ideas perhaps! Also, I think I spotted a new animation on the adult wolf laying down at the end of the video! I love the aspect of more grooming in the game.
Oh my gosh!! The puppies just got even more cuter now! And we get to see them truly evolve from humble beginnings to stronger and stronger wolves!
I always dreamed of an update where when at the rendezvous site, the pups could catch little field mice or something and contribute to their hunger by them selves. Once everything’s done, I can’t wait to try it out! This is gonna be so good 😊
IM SO EXCITED THANK YOU FOR GIVING US THIS entertainment LOVE YOUR GAME but wait a second one of my fears are letting the pups explore I feel like a cougar is going to grab them or a bear and even worse an eagle bug that’s how they grow lol

In my head, they make it realistic. When pups are all wobbly, it IS easier for predators to get to them. It kind of makes sense for a little bit more of a challenge on that. Still super excited for it though!!

@@joshstueber1828 Ik I have a really protective wolf she is a runt so I’m going to use her for this but one of her fears is letting her pups out of sight if there sleeping she always makes them go In a line then she will lie infront of them for safety but bee is going to have a hard time

Blimey! I'm so excited for this new AI system 🧡 It's going to be so cute watching our pups as they start acting more mature and learn how to hunt. It's going to be super cool! I'm really looking forward to the "continuous saga" update where the game continues into the next year after our pups grow up. It'll be so lovely to see our wolves live out an entire legacy and have a pack to hunt with 🥰

ive always liked observing the pups' personality due to the nature system but this is gonna be so cute and a much more in depth. sooo looking forward to seeing the adolescent-yearling wolves someday.

I’m super excited! I know this probably is not gonna get added, but I hope we’ll be able to decide if the puppy leaves once fully grown and capable or not! It would be useful in being able to develop stories and playing as the next generation!

@@MysticFoxWildlifeArt you can't switch wolves in the middle of a game to play as your pups. The only time you can play as pups is from the family tree and you're a dispersal.

@@MysticFoxWildlifeArt that's the thing. they won't be able to find mates at just a year old. only dispersal wolves (2 or more years) search for mates, and at that point you will be able to play as the wolf as normal.
I'm so glad you all listen to feedback. It feels almost unreal that such devs exist. I remember suggesting this, pups growing up, and I'm sure many others have as well, getting feedback straight from you all and it just felt nice to be heard. Though to be fair, bigger devs may not be able to have such a bond with their community, so no hate, but I absolutely love this development team

You mean will they play and such like the little ones? Yearling are more like adults but they will have some different behaviors to, most likely.

I cannot put it into words how exited I am for the saga. Been a dream of mine since I was younger.
I think they don’t realize how personally I AM EXCITED for this!!! ❤🎉
I hope we get caregiver wolves - pups that stay after growing up to care for the new litters alongside the mating pair. So when you essentially restart the game to have your next litter, maybe one or two adults remain with you and help feed new litters, defend territory, encourage a pack hunt, etc. Might be a lot to expect/ask for in terms of the work that would have to be put in, but it would still be so cool!! Everyone just wants a big pack in the end, I think! 😂 But maybe that can only be gained after several generations of wolves mostly leaving and some staying - could be an adult limit of 8, and that allows for the introduction of more adult pack social behaviors and fascinating dynamics. It could eventually be able to introduce human intervention, the threat of hunters/vengeful ranchers or even the presence of biologists taking wolves away to either place trackers or straight up removal projects to relocate some of the adult pack members (previous pups) of packs that reach a size limit. Wolfquest is my childhood and I love seeing it expanding and becoming more and more refined. It played such a huge part of my desire to become an environmental scientist/ecologist and conservation biologist. I live in AZ, so my hope is to be involved in the Mexican Wolf Project within the next 5 years... Big hope since it's a smaller team, but Wolfquest was such an influence that inspired my path. Thank you, devs and others, for your passionate work, beautiful creations, and educational mission in the name of Wolves!! ❤️

imagine having 10-55 wolves like realistic packs! since the map is too small for perhaps 55 wolves, the developers could create an even bigger map for us to roam around?

@@lazyrat6687 an average sized pack will have as many as 6 to 8 members. But there was a Canadian pack that held the highest number of individuals, 36!!!! That's a VERY successful pack.

You guys never cease to amaze me with all the amazing updates for wolfquest! I'm so happy to see how far the game has come since I first discovered wolfquest, and I can't wait to see the saga when it's finished!

Ive known this game for at least 6 years now and i am SO excited for the saga! (I was genuinely smiling while watching this) The wolfquest team is really great because they put so much time and effort into realism and making their players happy. Take as much time as you need to make this the best it can be and we will be patient :D

I am beyond excited for the next update to come out. Not only are we seeing new pup animations and levels. But i did notice that at the end of the video it seems our wolf will also be getting new animations (like grooming while laying down). Keep up the good work!!

this is so cool! the clumsy walks is adorable and that little awoo is heart melting. one thing i think would be intresting to add is if you could choose perks like you do for yourself on your birthday but for your yearlings. these bonuses could be like 'can sense predator attack' or something and as they grow it turns into an already existing perk. something to think about, not at all pushing you to make this or anything, generally think its neat. have a great spring Wolfquest team!
Something cool that I think that could be added eventually is pups being born with disabilities / defects which would make it more challenging to play the game, especially if you were to age them up. Wolves with a heart defect that would need to rest more often, a wolf that’s partially deaf which makes the sounds like howls and such more muffled, blindness in one eye where the screen might be distorted or something like that. Am really excited for the saga to be released.

That’s such a cool idea. But with probably very small chances of it happening, such as maybe one out of seven thousand pups born with a disability. And probably if the wolf is KK locus, the chances are increased?
I was so pumped to see this update!! It's literally my dream to go visit Yellowstone one day and get as close as I can to the actual area in the game. It would be so amazing to do something like that!!
