    Someone explained to me that a beef cow is equivalent to a body builder, and a dairy cow is equivalent to a long distance runner. Both healthy, both body types are appropriate for their jobs. As someone who knows nothing about cattle…that made sense. Lol!

    I've never heard of a beef cow, what breed is that?

  • @KendraBork

    @KendraBork

    @@carolined5929 There's a wide variety of beef cattle breeds. Angus is one more of the well-known ones (thanks to the breed association having a good marketing department LOL). Holsteins and Jerseys are the most well known dairy cattle breeds - most every other breed of cattle is bred more for beef production. That's probably over simplified, but I was an animal science major in college, so I won't bore you with more. 😊

    Thank you so much for a day in your life. Me and my sister are nurses, but we grew up on a small Texas ranch while we were 11-12, until our parents divorced. (Fast forward 20 years later) We're tired of the city, and city people, and we're NOT going to get any more mandated "pokes", so that's the end of those careers. We're selling both our houses, and are currently looking for a small 5-10 acre homestead in North Texas. I found your vlog by searching how to make sourdough bread starter, and I was immediately hooked. Now I send clips like this one to my sister because we need to learn the adult side of homesteading. We just used to collect eggs and feed the cows an chickens, and tend moms garden as kids, but it's so much more then that. Thank you so much for your lessons in life that will help us on our path to getting back to our roots, learn self sufficiency, with the knowledge that money isn't the root of all happiness. I hope you had a happy 4th of July!

    🐮 Our jersey has a ton of flies! We found a great natural fly spray! 4c of acv 1-2 Tbsp oil 1-2 Tbsp dish soap 20 drops of citronella eo 20 drops rosemary eo 12-15 drops peppermint eo 20 drops eucalyptus eo Mix in a spray bottle and spray 1-2x/day. It is seriously cut down on her bites soooo much 🙌 and it’s natural! Win-win 🎉

    Hello from Ireland. When we had milking cows for the house, we'd sit in close almost under them, put the bucket between our knees at a slight slant, gripped by the ankles and milk 2 teets at a time, left right, left right, get a rhythm going, head propped on the cow's side, she is less likely to move or kick. Listening to the goings on inside the cows was funny :-) we'd strain the milk in muslim into a container for the fridge. The cream that rises to the top was delicious, especially on cereal for breakfast. Morning milk was used in the evening and evening milk was used the following morning and day... mother made butter from the milk also in a churn.

    Enjoyed the video! I love summer mornings so much. Just want to add something about the kefir. In Europe when we make kefir usually in the process we don’t use anything made from metal, like spoons, strains or bowls because its bad for the kefir grains. They react in some kind of “bad way”. We use things that are made from plastic and of course glass jars. Just saying. You can research it 😊 Have a nice day. ☀️

    We have a Jersey cow as well. She looks just like yours. A Jersey milk cow just has a thinner form than other cows. Ohh, the flies! It's the same here....the bull calf never has flies on him, but our CeCe girl always does. We made a natural fly spray that works well, just doesn't last long. We also let our girl in the yard. I love looking out my kitchen window and seeing her in the front. We have better grass in our yard right now as opposed to the pasture, which needs plowing. It was fun watching this. Your milking routine is just like ours. We strain while milking as well. Just makes it easier.

    When you were showing your garden and mentioned herbs it reminded me to get out to mine and cut some so I wanted to share a tip. Since cilantro and basil bolt so fast, way before my tomatoes ripen, which is when I mainly use them, I give them a quick chop and put them in containers and fill with water. The water protects them so when you unthaw them they’re more fresh like. Filling several containers ensures that I’ll have enough for salsa and sauces.

    Have been watching you for a while now and enjoying all of your content from email to KZread to podcasts. I laugh to myself at these types of videos because I want to sit and see what you’re doing, but your energy gets me moving, cleaning and working! I so appreciate all of your material, and your family is beautiful. ♥️

    I live in an apartment on the 7th floor and only have a little concrete balcony but I am attempting to grow stuff. I lost my sunflowers due to the wind, my lettuce got over run by leaf miners but so far my brocoli, onions, beetroot and carrots appear to be doing okay and my logan Berry Bush not sure about him, that may be a fail.

    Great video. Your homestead is so beautiful. Love seeing barefoot children playing outside and doing chores. It’s good for them to have some responsibilities. Reminded me of my childhood. Fond memories! God bless you and your precious family! 😀❤️
