Small Boat Fishing - Shark hunt on the drift - Thornbacks at anchor

Спорт

In this trip I overnight at anchor at Hurst Castle which gets me closer to the Needles and a jumpstart to the South Coast shark grounds. The plan is to drift at dawn 2 hours heading West covering shark alley and use the change of tide to drift 3 hours back East covering as much ground as possible before anchoring up for the rest of the day.
The drift works perfectly but my chum mix is light on oil and this results in most of the drift running "dry". Needless to say there was a lesson learned and even the failures can make for positive outcomes as this will be corrected for next time.
With such light winds and perfect conditions I had the opportunity to launch and film with the drone which gives a whole new perspective.
The fishing on this session was a struggle and fish were few and far between but both thornbacks were on the larger side and it was nice to catch both sexes.

The Warrior 165 is a perfect fishing boat for UK inshore waters and balances size, weight, capability and performance in a compact and manageable package. A fuel burn at cruising speed (18 knots) of 0.8litre/Nm solo with fishing kit. I generally calculate 1 litre/Nm to allow for weather conditions and tide.
Easily launched solo from a sheltered slipway or with 2 from a more technical launch and very predictable characteristics out on the water. Trim is important and molly-moo has the factory additional 5 degree trim plate.
Anchoring can be carried out through the forward hatch but I prefer in most cases to anchor from the Stbd aft corner using a lazy line connected fwd. An Alderney retrieval including ring, A2 buoy and triangle make for an easy evolution.

    You are very welcome and if anything I film helps, well it was worth taking the cameras. I’m a lot more comfortable with the new set up I’m using to film and I’m getting the shots that in my mind are what I’d like to show. Loads planned including “workshop ramblings” and a trip to Norway along with a lot of winter shore fishing and the occasional boat trip when weather permits.

    I always enjoy your videos. Can I ask a silly question. When you caught the second Thornback, why did you throw the bait over the side. I'm not tight by any means, but the amount of really good fish my mate and I have had on used bait is quite amazing. The bait usually just needs re-hooking. It's grazy how quick the next bite comes.

  • @seaangling

    @seaangling

    Mackerel tends to rinse out pretty quick but you do see me reusing bait in some videos where the fish are full on and competitive. On this day it was very hard going and so I needed every advantage. The oil/smell from a fresh bait would help to bring fish into the area. In short when it is busy and fish are feeding I will reuse a bait if possible. When things are slow or the bait is washed out I will refresh.

    My mate is on 4 fish on the same bait. I'm on 3. I agree mackerel does wash out quickly but still catches. Fresh mackerel not quite so quick. All the fish we've had on the same bait doggies haven't featured very often. Strange.
