8:40 Funny story about that. I remember watching my dad's now-ex-wife's nephew play Stand Tall on the Four Pillars back when the game was new, and he was struggling with it. Eventually, he got all four but was then confused as to what happened. After a few minutes of searching the level, I saw the now-flat-topped pyramid and suggested that he go up there to take a look at things to see what the change was, not knowing that _that_ was the change. I feel silly about it now, but actually having a cutscene there would have prevented that confusion from happening.

@@Xenthio The cutscene is in the files along with camera shake data. Additional shake data is commented out which means the devs intentionally removed it.

For anyone wondering, a Pedro Spot is a special case where Mario maintains his position while increasing speed. It is not a softlock. Pannen explained it very well in kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJV-sbiylrPHcqg.html at timestamp 3:29.

Didn't think I would understand this comment when I got to that point of the video I was wrong

I like to creep around my home and act like a goblin I don’t know why but I just enjoy doing this. Maybe it’s my way of dealing with stress or something but I just do it about once every week. Generally I’ll carry around a sack and creep around in a sort of crouch-walking position making goblin noises, then I’ll walk around my house and pick up various different “trinkets” and put them in my bag while saying stuff like “I’ll be having that” and laughing maniacally in my goblin voice (“trinkets” can include anything from shit I find on the ground to cutlery or other utensils). The other day I was talking with my neighbours and they mentioned hearing weird noises like what I wrote about and I was just internally screaming the entire conversation. I’m 99% sure they don’t know it’s me but god that 1% chance is seriously weighing on my mind.

seeing you under anything not 85% undertale related is spooky to me

this hack reminds me of an idea i had for a rom-hack that seemed normal, but there would be minor changes like small graphical bugs or things slightly out of place, but would play pretty much normal. the catch would be if you tried to do certain things, like clipping through the stairs to get to the second floor faster or grabbing the ledge from the basement to the lobby, then you would get transported to secret levels. there would be hidden hints about this, maybe a few hidden signs or something, but anyone who's played mario 64 long enough would stumble into one of them by accident and get the idea to check other areas.

It sounds good in theory but wouldn't really work since speedrunners wouldn't want to play a vanilla experience and people who do would just emulate the vanilla version

I really like the idea of this hack, it feels like a fake alternate beta, and it taps into all the cool questions unused assets raise neatly

Its incredible how varied the song queue is. The disney bumbers one reminds me of when I used to watch old drive-in ads on youtube. Those types of videos are made for nostalgia, yes, but also preservation.

Author here. One thing that wasn't mentioned on the hack page, is that the hack is open source. This hack is not meant to be a personalized/spooky hack. It was originally a personal hack to showcase unused assets for tcrf, but it spun into the stuff in the video overtime. Also, this hack is unrelated to other beta projects, except for the Lost3DBrother project (Which I am also working on).

Hacks that use the original levels but modified probably feel the best because they aren't overdesigned. I think what makes Mario64 feel so good to play, is that the game doesn't expect you to use most of your movement options, so when you schmoove it feels special rather than intended

Hearing heartbreak playing changes anything that's going on as soon as I realize what it is.

After speedrunning for many years, completing many great feats, the only thing that remains is BLJing into different dimensions and completing every version of SM64

Giga Bowser's textures would be offset by 1 cm so you can see the texture seams and Nintendo would charge 59.99 for it.

Every few months or so I get to hear Simple say the word 'Wolves' as 'Wooves' and it's always my favorite.

The triple jump looks like the "sparkly" triple jump you get from Yoshi. I'm pretty sure you can't wall kick out of that one either.

8:18 so that's why grabbing a box makes you jump uncontrollably into the air. It's because it was originally a giant grasshopper.

About the pillars cutscene, yeah, there's indeed an unused camera action whose focus coordinates line up with the pyramid top. It was easy to figure out what that was meant for, as this hack showed off.

I really hope “is Luke Seward the composer” was intended as a joke because I’d feel really bad for laughing this hard if he just didn’t get the reference 😂😂😂

Whoever did the end card this time is a genius, had me pausing the video to actually check after I already watched the whole end card once to see if I could spot a change with just my eyes. This is a cool hack, using beta elements from the game to create an alternate version of it. There's a couple of hacks similae to this out there but it's nice to see more.

When Mario grabs a Power Star in this hack, it looks like he's about to do a Fortnite dance. I'm not sure how to feel about that...

I feel like if someone made a genuine movement playground, like you have pretty much 4 different types of movement and physics, simple would probably play that shit for hours with no end

12:54-13:00 I heard that Super Mario 64 was originally in development for the SNES, which greatly restricted the potential for stages to sprawl out in multiple directions. So had they released the game on the SNES, EVERY level would’ve been linear (think Super Mario 3D Land, but on SNES hardware & exploiting the SuperFX chip to its full potential). So the developers decided to leave the Bowser stages linear as a nod to “what could’ve been”.

Simple calling the hack "A little bit dramatic" for crashing the entire emulator instead of just the hack itself is so simple yet funny and entertaining, have a good day everyone
