Onion is Gourmand’s kid without a doubt, he’s got good spear throws, he loves to eat, and he’s even the same color.

I feel like this series gives me a little more confidence to take the pups off the leash sometimes. They seem to be a little more capable and competent than I initially gave them credit for

Just be wary about letting them roam around areas with pitfalls. Also I've found that if you've spent your entire time holding onto them they have a tendency to act helpless as a result, because they were never given the chance to be independent before. So start off slow.

​@@BatFlightThylacineI tested that, you are right, on a survivor run that I had gotten slugpups, I always held one with me, and other I let free, the one always held was always helpless alone, while the other already trys to do things instead of nothing

This is starting to feel like an omnipotent dungeon master throwing shit at their dnd party and I am so here for it, I was rooting for onion to not die and my jaw was CLENCHED when the poor thing kept getting grabbed at by Vultures. This is why you don't name things after food, it's just manifesting that shit lol

Personal notes on subjects: Fleece: Is awkward and panics under stress; preferably stays out of combat. Bingus: Serves the purpose of a decoy in the team and is willing to sacrifice themselves to save their friends. Jib: Is a very skilled hunter. Performs the best in fights, easily dodging enemy attacks and hitting the most amount of spears. Onion: Is rather silly, doing funny things that make no sense and don't contribute to their survival.

As much as I'm a fan of each of the slug pups, I am curious as to who would win between the four if they all were really fighting each other, Bingus tends to head straight into combat, so does Onion sometimes, and we've seen both use what's around them to their advantage outside of just regular spears, Fleece mostly assists but seems more opportunistic in combat, getting in a spear throw from a distance when possible, such as when the vulture tossed Onion and Fleece was quick to get a hit in, and Jib, tbh idk what Jib's deal is

Fleece would probably win... in both experiments they've been a low key sociopath, (one example: 4:28 pelts Bingus in the head with a rock while vulture is nearby).

seeing the king vulture pick off all of the easy prey was a little terrifying. it’s almost as if it knew what was going on and didn’t want any distractions

i think the first miros vulture might have gone off screen to fight the king vulture that fled, possibly the rest did so too, or to fight the previous miros vultures

These are babies. They're not even fully grown slugcats. If the babies are this dangerous, the canon equivalent of an adult slugcat is a player with little to no skill issues.

I'm glad this is a thing now, it's really interesting since it's different to the other creatures because we play and relate to slugcats

Iirc, slugpups actually will not grab explosive spears. They might grab other types, such as electric and firebug needles, but I believe they are too afraid of explosive spears, which is why they didn't seem very interested in your 'generosity' D;

from what i've been told, for whatever reason, miros vultures don't quite work the way they're supposed to and instead doggedly hunt specifically and only the player and ignore everything else. this makes them even more annoying than they were supposed to be :V

The Miros vulture is just a goofy little guy. He’s not hurting anyone.

I thought the miros vulture would be a tragedy, but it ended up being a comedy.

I'm honestly not sure. There were a few times where I could have sworn spears had connected with heads during some of the scuffles. It might be one of the mods that I have enabled that disables spear hits on pups, but it also could be linked to the same jollycoop spear-hit setting. Or toggle the spear-hit in the competitive arena? Idk.

GLaDOS lore??? Okay Batflight, I see you, things are getting quite interesting behind-the-scenes! I’m honestly impressed by the ability of the spups to handle the vultures, I thought at least one would’ve been snatched up before they had a chance to regroup together. Their proficiency with spears shows itself again, and that poor noodle balloon got stunlocked to death. I’m also surprised they could handle the King Vulture so well, I was sure someone was going to get harpooned, but they seriously did a number on it! I feel like they’re good enough at dealing with threats that they could’ve even handled the Miros Bird you accidentally spawned in, they seemed to have it handled (or the poor bird just got stuck). Those scissor vultures are such a weird creature though, I guess they wanted to go after the wounded King Vulture offscreen? I don’t mean to tell you what to do or anything, but I’d be super interested in seeing scavengers make an appearance in these sorts of experiments. If slugpups mimic the behavior of the player to see how they interact with scavs, how would they react to them on their own? Would they be chill, or would we have an Arti situation? Do the spups understand the concept of trading? Would they learn it if they see scavs trading things or going for pearls? Ahh, it’s all so interesting to me, and I’m confident whatever you make next will turn out to be great! Also hearing the way GLaDOS says “Bingus” just brings me joy

Actually, something I just thought of, but would you be able to have a similar style test with the vultures and other aerial predators in a more enclosed room, so they don’t dip out into the great beyond?I’m not sure if they would still try to escape by the nonexistent ceiling in a situation like the King Vulture getting wounded, or if it would know that escape is impossible and stand its ground. Maybe at least the great buggy buzzsaw buzzards would actually interact with other things around them and not fuck off to nowhere at least, though it seems that even the spups didn’t really interact with the Miros Vulture much at all either. They seem to run around other predators and try to pelt them with projectiles, but they didn’t even attempt to with the Miros Vulture, just kinda stared at it. Even with the accidental razor blade ratite they reacted quickly with some swift spears to the head. I guess they’ll just go for things if they feel more directly threatened, and the Miros Vulture was just sort of vibing so they didn’t want to aggravate it? Idk, just some thoughts I had. The Miros birds might be an interesting thing to study, even if for a short mini experiment or something on your own time, they’re such weird creatures and their environment is so dark it’s hard to tell how they interact with other wildlife outside of just running around the place snip-snapping their jaws at things I can barely see. Again, you do whatever you’d like to do, I just think they’d be a neat subject for future study. (Man, I find it funny that I’m talking about the weird goofy animals in a video game about a silly lil slug boi like I would an actual animal being researched. I guess it goes to show how unique Rainworld’s life is, or just how weird I am :p)

ive seen them hunt orange lizards when the slugcat is out of sight but they definitely prefer slugcats

The rumbling at the end might be the miros vulture fighting each other. Although I wonder why if they did snip at each other why one didn't crash down like I've seen in my testing.

Miros bird heard what happened to the other vultures and noped outta there. Also am curious if you plan on testing the adult slugcats. Would like to see how well Artificer and Saint use their mobile features, especially when under pressure.

I've only seen Miros Vultures in campaigns where Slugpups don't spawn, so my guess is they weren't coded to hunt them.

These are amazing haha. I've been known to fiddle with sandbox and stuff, but this is another level of depth. I have noticed though, that miros vultures are oddly pacifistic when trying to employ them on purpose. I am curious though, I haven't dabbled in anything beyond beastmaster creature control wise. Seems there's some powerful stuff out there. But outside of specific IDs like the pups, is there any benefit to console spawning over beastmaster? Like for the miros vultures or etc.

there's not much difference. other than having specific control over the conditions of what is spawned in when using the console (which even then i don't dabble in much because i don't have a good understanding of how some of the commands work). I like to use both Beast master and the console because some items/creatures are easier to spawn in with either one or the other. You can see me have a moment where I hesitate when I bring the beastmaster menu up because I had to remember where the explosive spears were. The creature menu is even more confusing. Also sometimes I have the dev tools activated and pressing B both brings up the Beastmaster menu AND launches all the creatures in the room to my cursor. So It's really just a matter of having the versatility of possessing access to different ways of spawning stuff in that I like to have on the fly.

As someone who spends more time playing around with beastmaster in arena mode then actually playing the story mode, I have noticed that for some reason, miros vulture only seem to go after slugcats the are being controlled by the player even if aggressive ai is on. I have no idea why they are like this, but that's probably why they weren't interested in the slugpups.

How many takes did it take for them to NOT die to the vulture? I don't buy that they did that first try, no creature in this game is that competent, unless it's killing me.

It was actually the first take (technically second, which you can see based on the fact that the slugpups ids were input twice in the dev console screen when it shows up) The first take I had been experimenting with noodle flies. They had more trouble with the single Noodlefly mother. Noodle fly mama wiped them all out. Which wasn't that interesting so I didn't bother with adding it in. Honestly I think this particular arena was what really helped them out. The way the platforms are spaced really hinders the Vulture's ability to just swoop down, grab and take off, and it screwed up the King Vulture's aim with the narrow gaps. All this forced the Vultures to come to ground and fight at the same level as the pups.

I would die for them.

I find the twists and turns these experiments unsettling and intriguing... I must know more!

I love bingus' determination, like the going for eggbug all the time or in the last video trying to fight the lizard whilst starving.
