SLOW TV Oxford Canal near Barby
A trip in real time along the Oxford Canal between Willoughby and finishes just before the Barby straight on board the Royalty Class Motor Victoria powered by a trusty Lister JP2.
I didn't originally post it as the camera was vibrating too much, but using youtube's image stabilisation has improved it, even though things sometimes look like jelly.
Part of a series of realtime canal boating videos on board Royalty Class Motor Victoria:

You know, in some ways I'm thankful KZread is around. Because having grown up in Connecticut, I've never seen a canal boat in person. Thanks for recording your journeys.
We're very interested in 'slow TV', no presenters, muzak or opinion, just an immersive tour with natural sounds and sights. Thanks for adding this really enjoyable one. I hope between us we can spread these kind of videos around a little. It's a great way to enjoy our world.
thanks for all your channel
Watching your trip videos and listening to that wonderful Lister are the best de-stressing remedies I have ever found. The wobble is bit hypnotic too. Almost as good as a glass of wine!

kmanison glad you enjoyed, though I enjoy a glass of cider myself!
Nice seeing an old Lister running properly sounds excellent and no smoke at all. I'd be willing to bet she just sips fuel the way you run her.

James Shanks : I was an aerial crop-spraying salesman during the late '60s & early '70s in Western Australia, just before the electrical power grid system became fully established in rural wheat growing areas. Up to that time there were hundreds of reliable Lister diesel-engined generators on farms, miles away from any established infrastructure. The engines would be plodding away, especially in the evening/night time up until bedtime so families could do their chores, cook a meal by light, and listen to their favourite serials such as Blue Hills by Gwen Meredith on the "wireless". This fascinating sound brings back memories of the Good Old Days when I was just starting out on my working life.
Lovely, peaceful, colourful video. Thanks AJ
An excellent tutorial on how to steer a narrowboat.
What a stunning day. Thanks for the ride.
So relaxing with the hypnotic effect of the engine exhaust I fell asleep. Lovely.
What an absolute pleasure! Thanks for sharing!
Stunning scenery.
I sit enchanted. Thank you!
I've just watched this video from start to finish in one go. Very relaxing and peaceful. More of the same please!!

What a peaceful life, and your engine sounds in perfect order, not a whiff of smoke to be seen.
Wonderful video. I marvel at the skill of the person on the helm, makes it look so easy.
So beautfull! I wonder how much work and fight to obten and keep this goods!
I'm too darned big to fit into one of those barges to live in. But I'll be damned if I'm not going to try.
Have you ever said "ahoy there!" whilst talking to someone on the canal bank?
Nice to have the experience of the sounds and vision at natural speed, and to see what "ticking over" is all about as you pass other craft or bridges. Do the bridges carry road traffic or just foot traffic?

dav snow no traffic but farm traffic on them bridges through there!

+mykaskin : Thanks for your quick answer, satisfied my curiosity.
A wonderful, relaxing journey but the rhythmic popping of the Lister was all but putting me to sleep. How do you manage to stay awake? As to the 'jelly' effect, it is humorous when the boat appears to flex and bend like it was constructed of rubber. I noticed that you stood clear of the bank in most places. Is your working boat draft deeper than that of most of the pleasure craft?
@mykaskin

ncplantdoctor yeah, the boat is well over a foot deeper than most other boats, but there is no point moving over more than 3.5 foot from the centre of the channel for both boats. You should always aim to just miss the other boat so both boats are in deep water and you are clear of overhanging trees.
Any idea how many actual working boats are left that like you actually travel to sell their goods instead of tied up at the same point? Now I know why you drop to idle passing moored boats, so much easier to drop into reverse if someone pops up to flag you down. Please year construction of boat and engine kind sir. I think the working layout for a narrowboat is the way to go as it's so much easier to work on the engine and auxiliaries then scrunching down under the deck in a tiny place. You have the best of both worlds a place to work that is a pleasure and a pain when the weather decides not to cooperate. You are a lucky man. Cheers Jim
😁👍👏👏👏
What is the gauge on the rear of the pigeon box?

It's an oil pressure gauge.
Why is the canal so muddy looking.

Canals use clay puddle to keep the water in, and they are not very deep. Also a lot of leafs, branches, and other natural detritus end up in the canal, and rot away causing light silt which settles on the bottom. Each boat past or the water flow at the locks picks this up, and it is then suspended in the water.
Have you calculated how much fuel you use on average in some sort of way? Liters per hour or or week such?
@mykaskin
5 жыл бұрын
It varies a bit depending on the type of waters you are on, but it's under two litres an hour even flatout.
Your pidgin box is the same as what’s on my boat and I’m after a new one where was it from ?

Strewth, pass me the earplugs please! Fortunately, the racket this narrowboat is making, is not duplicated by all Narrowboats. Lovely video, if watched with the sound turned low/off.

Tim Stewart you have to remember that the camera is right next to the exhaust! It's a nicer noise in person.

@@mykaskin Hi, thanks for the reply, which is much appreciated. I take your point about the microphone being near the camera. Could you possibly arrange to record sound away from the exhaust? I love well cared for engines of all types, but feel, that like children, they should be seen, but not heard. :o)
